Its crazy to think that these young men/women are making mountains of money for everyone else & many of the students are from working class/non-wealthy homes. Without much help from home, many of the kids can't even afford to purchase a meal off campus or a ticket to fly/bus home for a holiday break. Yes, we give them a scholarship/housing allowance - but we give the same award, scholarship/housing allowance to an academic standout scholar, but we place no additional burden on the academic standout. A student athlete on scholarship must attend class and maintain GPA. That unto itself can be a challenge, and then consider the extra effort and risk that we demand from the student athlete. These big programs put a lot of physical stress on the student athlete and there is the risk that they will suffer a career altering/ending injury. We put a lot of psychological stress on the athlete - expecting them to perform academically, athletically, and also serve as a role model and keep a clean image in order to attract new fans and new recruits.

These shoe companies (especially the ones trying to compete with Nike) would be better off investing that money in shoe designers if they want to compete. They forget about the importance of the product in the whole equation. If you want to dethrown Nike you have to beat them with the design team. Once you start to deliver on the shoe the players will want in. They might even take a slight paycut because they want to be apart of the movement.

You could write a whole new edition of Bartlett's just from this segment.

I like Jay Bilas. He's one of the few on the players side and tells the truth. I respect coaches who take care of their players more than the one's who don't. The problem is greed of the coaches, administration and NCAA.

The Wall Street comparison was insanely ridiculous and not at all comparable. However, Bilas is right that the money issue won't change. When programs step too far over the line, they're gonna get zinged.

NCAA needs to have a coaches license that all Major College coaches must hold in order to coach..If they cheat or mess up the NCAA has the power to revoke their license, like in boxing. Sick of someone like pitino cheating then the players get the death penalty or cant play in tourney ..then pitino gets hired again by the lakers or some other team and makes 8 mill a year not fair....If you lose your license to coach your done!

If the payment of college athlete's is the solution, then this should be done under the minor league system such as what baseball has. The primary mission of all these institutions is ACADEMIC not athletic. Where is the oversight of the state for these public institutions? It is obvious the university admin can't monitor or police.

How would you determine fair market value for an athlete? Would there be a salary cap for schools? Couldn't schools with the most money just "buy" all the good recruits? Although I believe athletes should receive compensation, I just don't see an easy fix for this.

Rich, why is this disgusting? The idea that people with skills get paid for their labor. Just because it bursts the myth of the pure amateur? Collage sport is a business. The idea that the NCAA wants to regulate their income falls flat on its face. The system will change when the players say no more. Ask your next guest who played collage sports about their attendance in class? Ask them how many players graduated. How can he be a great coach if he was just out spending the competition? Some one said you can lose with good players, but you can never win with out good players. So by buying good players you are boosting your chances of success.

The NBA needs to step in and form an organized minor league system like what baseball does. MLB has shown that college baseball and minor league baseball can co-exist. Look to the NBA to fix this. The NCAA will NEVER fix this. Why should they do what is right and pay the players when they are getting paid out the ass to do the wrong thing?

Bilas seems to forget....how do you pay men's players and not women's? see where this is going? Women's sports make no money..so now all the sudden you are paying women who aren't drawing any revenue. The big programs can probably swing it..the smaller P5 programs would likely struggle.
