sara lincoln no, it wasn’t, all due respect Sara. You would have stated a strong case, it if wasn’t for the undeniable fact that this has been a systematic behaviour from Serena’s behalf when she has found herself against the ropes during a defining moment in a decisive US Open match. This was the third time in Serena’s U.S. Open career that she’s been losing a match late in the tournament and melted down in bizarre fashion, the previous ones being her 2009 SF against Clijsters, and the 2011 F against Stosur. Carlos Ramos wasn’t the chair umpire on those, and yet, the same exact thing occurred. Each time, it resulted in eventual defeat. Each time, it made her look like a sore loser and an entitled person. Each time, willingly or unwillingly, she eclipsed the feat of her opponents, who bested her fair and square. And each time, the race card, the misogyny card, the persecution card was used. There is no doubt that the tennis world did treat Venus and Serena with contempt and disdain, but that doesn’t justify Serena’s demeanour in all of the mentioned incidents.

I agree with you about race for this conversation: irrelevant. But gender is being discussed here because Serena went there with Ramos, the umpire. Serena claimed that she was standing up for women tennis players everywhere, and Steven A is calling BS because Ramos has given men the exact same penalties for those same rule violations. I think the sexism card just popped into Serena's head and she went with it. If she were calmer and had it to do over again, I'd like to think she'd realize how foolish that was.

A white male on TV can't possibly blame a black female publicly even when its so blatantly obvious what Serena did was WRONG. Max = 100% wrong. Stephen = 90% right. Only problem I have with him is calling Serena the GOAT and saying if she were a man she would be the GOAT. I know its a bit semantic, but Serena is the GOAT of Female tennis. Not tennis. Serena can't even beat a #200+ ranked male. She is NOT the GOAT of tennis. There is a HUGE difference in play between men and women in Tennis. Probably more so than any other sport.

The racket** (not raquet) is the individual's choice. I imagine the females would PROBABLY tend to chose lighter ones, while men are probably more inclined to chose heavier ones. That being said, when I played I chose a lighter racket with a firm net for more power and less spin. So it is quite possibly purely up to the individual At the top level, ATP tours, men's tennis balls, I believe, are made slightly differently. I am not exactly certain on how they do this, but womens tennis balls go faster and glide in the air more. Men's tennis balls fluff up easier and tend to be slower. Yet they are the same size and weight, so how they accomplish this difference I am not sure. I think its to allow females like Serena to be able to serve at similar speeds to males. You'd have to look up the details on how they created this difference. would be interesting to see Other than that thay are the exact same. Same rules, same lines, same courts, same rackets, same balls (except above), womens tennis is just shorter (best of 3).

the rule is the same for men and women but as with most if not all of these unsportsmanlike conduct violations they are not always enforced strictly to the tee. there have been many moments where raquets have been smashed and no penalty was given. so it is fair to point to that. still, SAS is in the right here for once. serena is entirely at fault for escalating the situation and making a whole scene of it, which she already has a record of doing. its extremely unprofessional, and thats exactly where she differs from the mens champions like federer, nadal or djokovic. if they get what they feel like is a BS call against them, theyll let the ump know, sure. but then theyll go back to playing tennis. serena has proven multiple times that she is either uncapable or simply unwilling to do that. no sympathy with her there.
@lordhawkeye
@lordhawkeye 5 жыл бұрын
It was her third violation. Her third. Do you know what it says in the rules for your third violation? It costs you a game. So how about we ask the real question that should be asked? At what point is in on Serena to get her act together and act professional? As someone who has played the game for the better part of three DECADES, and has won many opens, she knows the third violation is a game point. She should know that yelling and picking a fight with an umpire is never correct. Serena is the reason why this moment was stolen from Naomi, not the umpire. And an umpire shouldn't look the other way just to make the game tell a better story because now you are talking about match fixing. Rules are there for a reason. When you step onto the court you are agreeing to play by the rules. Serena broke the rules, she got punished. End of story. No wiggle room. None. As to the anyone trying to lay blame at the feet of the umpire, he sat there for 90 seconds while Serena verbally abused him. The second she started chirping he could have cost her a point but he kept calm and tried to explain the situation to her. I dare anyone who thinks this umpire was in the wrong to sit in a chair, let someone yell at them for 90 seconds and try to remain half as calm and respectful as he was. Damn few of you could have done it with as much grace as he did.

It doesn't matter how "small" the infraction was. It was the THIRD ONE which is why the penalty was more severe. Common sense. Stephen A is right. That's why nothing was overturned. Worst part is, Serena knows the rules. She did this to herself and that's the best part. Why don't y'all talk about what REALLY went down and WHY SERENA KEPT PUSHING KNOWING THAT THE 3RD INFRACTION WOULD COST A GAME?? I'll tell why, CUZ SHE WAS GETTING HER BUTT KICKED AND SHE NEEDED AN EXCUSE AFTERWARD AS TO WHY SHE LOST SO QUICKLY / EASILY. Sorry but it's obvious. A combination of her emotions and losing got the best of her. She had a meltdown and tried to spin the narrative in her favor. Sore loser. Such a joke. Now attention is all on her, not the winner; and she's not a bitter loser but a "womens rights hero". Selfish and a complete joke. The official did his job and followed the rules, plain and simple. If kids are told to celebrate what Serena just did, then parents, teachers, and principals better celebrate when kids are "emotional and passionate" in the classroom while throwing a fit. I'm so sick of hearing her say that. It's her go to line when she acts like this and its not an excuse. I'm extremely passionate about my family, my career working with children, my favorite hobby of fishing, and I'm very competitive on the basketball court; but my "passion" never manifests like this. Naomi Osaka decided that match by putting a whooping on Serena the entire time. Serena lost it because she was taking a beating and that is what triggered her tirade. It's become the Norm for Serena in big matches when she is getting outplayed.

Three things to remember: -There were 4x as many code violations issued to men at the 2018 us open than women. (22 women - 96 men, sort of contradicts the sexism claim) -Serena has been assessed more in misconduct fines than any other player in women’s tennis the last 10 years. - third violation is an automatic game, most players stop acting up when the next infraction is a game penalty, Serena thought she was above the rules. There was no choice but to take a game for third violation.
@alexh2585
@alexh2585 5 жыл бұрын
There was a choice. Sorry I watch tennis. A lot of it. You obviously dont along with a lot of people on these threads. Women are on court far less so there is your reason for those irrelevant statistics. Given the championship nature of the match, he could have said "Serena, if you dont let this go I will give you a third violation". The rules have been selectively applied. Its not about sexism. That's where she lost a lot of peoples respect. She was victim to unfair umpiring but it had nothing to do with gender. Violation 1: I literally saw coverage of Sasha coaching Naomi. All of them do it so this ruling needs serious readdressing as you can't just give a violation if the ump sees it which is what obviously happened. Ramos saw Patrick do it but not Sasha...so how is that fair? Ruling needs to be examined immediately. If an umpire cannot surveillance it then the coaching from the stands should just be allowed. Saying Ramos was "within his means to implement the ruling" is a total copout. Its discriminatory to implement it to one person and not the other. Thats final. Violation 2: Serena was under the impression Violation 1 was a unofficial warning not a violation. She absolutely deserved this violation as it is fair across the board but the breakdown in communication between Ramos and Serena meant she didn't understand that this would be Violation 2 not Violation 1. Violation 3: She mentally spiralled. As would most players in the situation. That was not verbal abuse. That was tame love. The pretentiousness of the world continues to amaze me. "A thief"...verbal abuse? LMAO. Ramos abused his power and threw out violations like he was throwing candy to kids on Halloween. Both players are the victims. The integrity of the match (A GRAND SLAM FINAL) was diminished the moment his authority complex came the centre of the match. He job is to maintain order and let the tennis be what decides the outcome of the match. He tweaked and selectively applied rulings. People are becoming so diverted by the sexism claims but it should be about how to implement rulings fairly. Not about the sexism bullshit. Naomi Osaka won the 2018 US Open fair and square and what a wonderful human being she is but both players were robbed of the moment.
@jyashin
@jyashin 5 жыл бұрын
a h Your argument is completely invalid. 1) Men were given 4x as many violations as women. They are only on the court for 66% longer and there are 128 participants for both sexes. That clearly shows the men were called out WAY more than the women. 2) Rules are rules. The referee has no need to give a "warning" about giving a third violation. This would ONLY be a case if the ref was letting one player get away with stuff and the other wasn't. Carlos Ramos has been consistent throughout his career, his superiors (like SAS stated) hold him in the highest regard, and there's a reason he was selected to referee a finals. 3) The undeserved leniency you see in other sports does not apply to tennis. In baseball, basketball, etc. you can get away with talking because nobody can hear. In tennis though? You have a GIANT MICROPHONE broadcasting every word you are saying, and the crowd is SILENT by rule. The game is completely stopped, your words are the only thing going on, and you're defaming a man's integrity to the entire world. Overall: I agree with SAS. Serena is the greatest female tennis player, but she has a history of terrible attitudes and she's getting rightly punished for it.

jyashin 1) Did you even read my response about me believing this has nothing to do with gender? Yet you continue to compare men and women lol. Your the one caught up with the sexism viewpoint. My argument is that UMPIRING across the board is inconsistent. Nothing to do with men or women. So once again, your statistics regarding male vs female 2) "Rules are rules". Absolute copout. Rules are there to ensure fair play. This is not occurring. Again, actually read what I wrote. "This would ONLY be a case if the ref was letting one player get away with stuff and the other wasn't" - Again, read what I wrote. This is exactly what he did. In reference to this match, Osaka got the exact same coaching from Sasha as Serena did Patrick. ONLY ONE PLAYER WAS GIVEN A VIOLATION. I swear it's like talking to a kindergarden student with you. "Carlos Ramos has been consistent throughout his career, his superiors (like SAS stated) hold him in the highest regard, and there's a reason he was selected to referee a finals" - People of the highest regard often make misjudgements. That is what happened here. He did not use his discretion adequately. Again, diminishing the integrity of the final. 3) His integrity should be questioned. It's 2018 mate. Everyone is accountable for their decisions and so is he. Just like Serena is to the backlash she is receiving. She wrongly made this about sexism. I do not believe Ramos was sexist is any way. I believe Ramos applied a ruling to one and not the other as you so deny. This is wrong. Especially in a GS Final. His decisions were damning. We will have to agree to disagree as you are clearly uneducated in the tennis field.
@alexh2585
@alexh2585 5 жыл бұрын
MrVpassenheim The maths comparing men and women violations are irrelevant as I clearly stated that I believe no sexism occurred. Are all you people severely uneducated or something? That was my only criticism to Serena, making this about gender and not about the selective nature of the rulings themselves. THIS HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH HER BEEN A WOMAN. THIS HAS EVERYTHING TO DO WITH SELECTIVE IMPLEMENTATION OF RULINGS. Please read my response before saying nonsense.

The judge did NOT take a point from Serena for coaching. He gave her a WARNING. She decided to take a point from herself by breaking a racket and repeatedly berating the chair umpire. She knew the rules, but she decided to throw a tantrum. We all know she was cheated in the past in the Capriati match, but this time, it was her decision to throw the match away after she got nothing but a WARNING, about what her coach/former lover had done.

Nope, Ramos did. Serena knew she was not going to win. Especially when you get penalized for playing the game. Coaching is in every sport. When that infraction occured, she was on the opposite end of the court. It is apparent to me, you never won any sporting event, because If you did, you would know of what is like to compete, not to be a spectator, which you are. You watch too much TV, play the game. The umpire started this. McEnroe cussed at umpires, nothing happened, just like in every major sport. And he was not alone.

Some people(especially Americans) just casually say williams is the goat of tennis male or female. Yes she has more grand slams than the big 3. But the big 3 have 58 combined grand slams and they have played almost all the finals against each other. Absolute epic finals. Serena's biggest competition over the years was her sister and sharapova who have 7 and 5 slams. Women's tennis has degraded a lot since the 90s. People need to acknowledge that when they just casually say stuff.

The reason it was a game penalty and not a warning/point penalty was because it was the THIRD code violation. Other men who were given code violations usually didn’t receive game penalties because they knew to stop after the first or second violation. Serena would not stop badgering the umpire for several minutes on end until he finally gave her the third violation, which per the rules, is an automatic game penalty. If you’re going to claim Ramos shouldn’t have intervened because this is the biggest stage of tennis, then you should also expect the same of Serena to act in a professional manner under those circumstances.

I remember this incident well and was appalled at the time by Serena's conduct. It still angers me that she behaved like a prima donna and ruined what should have been a great victory for Naomi Osaka. Serena's behavior was not just wrong, as Stephen A said without filling in the major reasons why. It was disrespectful and belligerent toward the umpire and petulant in a way that was actually somewhat common for her, though less so in the tournaments since then. A typical "me, me!" kind of performance, striking out at the umpire with grotesque rage. She deserved to be penalized for such shameful conduct in verbally berating the umpire with little if any justification, spoiling a major tournament win for Osaka who was in tears afterward.

That makes no sense. I think Serena is phenomenal, but I don't think she can do no wrong. The ref never lied. He gave her a warning on coaching, which her coach later admitted to doing. It's a shit rule, but it is a rule. Lot's of players have gotten that warning in a game, even Serena has gotten it before. But a warning didn't cost her anything. Her opponent was winning at that point, then Serena rallied, then her opponent beat her back again. Then Serena let her frustration take control and smashed her racket (which she's also done before). That's what cost her a point. She took her head outta the game and let her emotion take control instead of focusing on the game, then started in on the ref again. That's what cost her a game. The ref followed the rules to the letter. Problem is Osaka, her opponent, was playing great the whole game. If this was really sexism I'd be yelling with you, but it just wasn't. I may think that first warning was a crappy thing to do in a championship game, but it didn't cost her anything. Her later actions did. She basically lost the game for herself. I hope she comes back next year and does well, but if she acts the same way another ref will just fine her for the same things. She's been fined before, it didn't normally affect the outcome this much because frankly she was playing better those games and had scored higher.

Serena WON more slams, except for Margaret, but Chris and Martina did not play the Australian Open 8 times when the two dominated the tour because it was not considered that prestigious at the time, and it did not pay enough. Chris also missed the French Open three times in her absolute prime, when she lost on clay only once in 175 matches, because the WTA final was considered more important. Martina also missed it several times. Steffi, who retired 8 years younger than Serena is now, has only one fewer slam title. So it's hard for me to see why Serena is considered the inarguable GOAT. Weeks at number one: Steffi: 377 Martina: 332 Serena: 319 Chris:260 Margaret, was the unquestioned number one for 12 straight years, except for time taken off to have a baby, and one year when she first married. Something like 500 weeks.....

I like these guys but they know nothing about tennis. Carlos Ramos did nothing but uphold the rules
