Why can we not name schools after people like Welles Crowther. Colleges, universities trade schools. People will learn and their legacy of bravery real bravery will live on. It touched me to see so many comments from young people saying they learned of Welles in their school. God bless him, the student and all the victims. They all went to heaven that day.

One of the schools in my district is named after Todd Beamer, one of the people on the flights that attempted to fight the hijackers. I think more modern schools are going to be named more and more after these heros.

Saw this in school and what this man did was amazing. Wish I had the courage and confidence that he did to completely risk his life for his country when he could’ve lived easily. The sad thing is sometimes it takes events like these to unite America. Respect for my guy.

I’ve watched hundreds of videos about 9/11 over the last 20 years. I’m 29… this video has impacted me more than anything I’ve ever seen before. These parents at 8:20 completely broke me the pain in their eyes. Really got to me!! 😭😭 Really put this event into perspective for me. Rest In Peace to everyone who was lost that day! ❤️❤️❤️

@@jenevieveyoung6506 I think theyre saying it’s easy to say “remember the victims” which isn’t inherently a bad thing to say, but it somewhat dilutes what happened. These are real people...all with different lives...and when you learn about one of them as in depth as you do from a video like this it’s kinda tough to just be like “remember the victims”....you kind have to remember the individuals you learned about

His dad's stuttering voice tells everything, how much his son meant to him and also how proud he is for his son to have met his fatal death while doing the things he loved the most... helping others

In my GA history class, we watched this video. Even once the bell rang for school to leave, we stayed behind to finish the video. We exited the course quietly, and by the time everyone had left the building, my close friend and I began to talk about the video, and we both started crying as we walked to our lockers. All my friends and I sat by our lockers and cried, talking about his bravery. This video deeply touched all of us, and I am so favored to have watched it today with my class.

I wanted to take a few minutes this morning and express my feelings about this video, this young man, and his family. I previously was a high school teacher for several years, at a small private school, and as the main history teacher I was usually tasked with putting together presentations for the campus on holidays & observances. I always strived to provide things with meaning, things that would stick with them long after they consumed it. Of all the things I’ve shown over the years, Welles was a constant. I cannot think of, especially on this day, anyone who better embodies what a child of God should do & how to carry themselves and treat others. I will watch this again today, and I will cry, because as a parent I deeply fear and dread what the Crowthers now live with, the loss of their Light, and I know today is hardest for those who lost loved ones in ‘01. For Welles to give of himself ultimately on that day, when he knew it would cost him his life, when he knew that even if he did not save many, 1 was enough to try, there isn’t a better example to any person what the word HERO stands for. GOD BLESS THE CROWTHERS, I THINK OF YOU TODAY, thank you for such a wonderful son, American, and child of God.

As the main history teacher, what was your approach to covering Black History Month?

@@johnnyblingg As with all of our events and celebrations, we highly encouraged student participation, so we usually had a weekly celebration throughout the month, with spoken word, interpretive dance, singing, all kinds if things, as well as celebrating important people in history, usually I preferred the kids to dig deeper and find people perhaps less well known. Our staff was small, so more like a family, and everyone had a blast participating. At the end of the month we had a big food festival, which again, was led by kids for kids. On a personal level, i always strove to teach kids history from the bottom up, if that makes sense. If imagining a hypothetical pyramid of society, where the Rockefellers for example exist on the top, and the kids who worked in coal mines or the girls who died in the Triangle Shirt waist fire, or Emmit Till, would be on the bottom of this pyramid, i always taught from the bottom. In my experience, kids learn from those they can relate to best (seems obvious), and that's the majority of society on the pyramid base. "Upside down history". Don't ever let anyone fool you into thinking that teaching is an easy job, its not easy to effectively reach, in my case 100+ kids on a personal level, find out what drives them & how they learn (there are many styles) and give each one the tools they need to excel in life. I have never once said to myself, "this is cool but I'll just save it for Black History Month". History is history, and any single experience can be used to relate to and help a student remember something, and with any luck, it fosters critical & intellectual thought and problem solving. My aim was more to produce productive members of society, not just passing a standardized test for example. I hope this answers what you were seeking without rambling too much!

21 years later, I am just hearing about Welles for the first time. My 8th grade son just learned about him in school last week on the anniversary of 9/11 and urged me to watch this video. “Mom, have you heard about the story of the red bandana?” He asked. I had not, and waited days to find time to watch this until he finally reminded me again and I put it on my watchlist. Couldn’t get through the first 2 minutes without crying. What a true American Hero. In these divisive times we live in in 2022, this story helped to put things all back into perspective....Love your neighbors . My son, who so urged me to watch this, is a lot like Welles. I feel he connected with him and would absolutely do the same thing in this instance. And after watching this he will strive even harder to be like Welles, I just know it. So glad schools are teaching this story to young people (and in turn, old) to help keep his memory alive. I’m sure many children watching this in their schools will be inspired. God bless Welles for still saving people and helping them be the best they can be.

Kswitch 28 So many extremists still out there worldwide. Al-Qeada...Taliban...ISIS...ISIL... all the U.S and NATO have ever wanted was world peace, but religious extremists and naive ignorance will never die, sadly. I have several friends from the Middle East, and they were horrified when I admitted that I used to think dropping a nuke there back in 2001 would be an answer. Far from it, now that I’m approaching 40. Guerrilla warfare has been around since Nazi tactics in the 1940s. We need more love, less hate. More understanding & compassion, less impatience & skepticism. Intel and education are everything. It’s easy to rock an S-vest, it’s much harder to help diffuse conflict, especially abroad with a uniform and a rifle.

I was 11 when this happened, I was too young to understand the severity of what was happening, I didn't even realize till yrs later that all the black dots falling from the buildings were ppl jumping cus they felt that was a better death than burning alive. My 8th grade English teacher showed our class this video at one of the first few weeks back at school. We had read The Fault In Our Stars and he wanted to teach us that affecting the people around us through small acts of kindness is just as significant as leaving behind a legacy. I’m not good with celebrities and i’m sure not good at remembering historical figures who weren’t always talked about. However, my teacher told us a short, 5 minute story, in fifth grade about Welles and what he did. I went home that night researching and watched this video. I’m in high school now, and he is still the greatest influence a person who i’ve never met has ever given me.

This is absolutely the story of a true hero. It's so sad to me that it took 18 years for me to hear Welles' story of bravery and selflessness. I have never heard of this before, and I've read and watched so much about 9/11 since the attacks. May this story live on, and I hope the next time I'm in NYC, I can see his bandana at the 9/11 Museum. God bless.

That young man man was a hero among heroes that day. All of those fireman, policeman, port authority, and civilians like Welles are heros to be remembered.

It’s been 20 years And 2 days since September 11,2001 and I hadn’t seen or heard of this story until my daughter asked me to watch it as they did Friday September 10,2021 in her 7th grade history class. This man was a true hero and it’s hard to watch this and not cry especially if you can remember the day it happened like it was yesterday, all those we lost we will never forget ❤️❤️❤️

Also, because it's ironic since the creator of that show, Seth MacFarlane was supposed to be on one of the planes that struck the Twin Towers, but he missed his flight due to a hangover from the night before. A simple hangover saved his life.

I use this moving video each year to help my 6th grade students understand what this day means to so many of us. Welles was a hero who genuinely just wanted to help people. I'm thinking of him and his parents today.

My teacher showed me this when I was in 6th grade an ever since I’ve always watched it. This was such an amazing story, my heart goes out to all the people that lost loved ones.

19 years and 9/11 still gives me that hurting feeling in my stomach, that lump in my throat. The pain that families have went through. God Bless.

Nothing can match the bravery of the people from that day. Knowing you will likely lose your life but still attempting to save people is courage like no other

This is my 1st time knowing of this brave young man. Moved me to tears.. How heartbreaking yet beautiful that someone had so much compassion and courage! My heart breaks for his parents every day especially yesterday. God speed Welles. Prayers to his parents, family and friends. What a tragic loss!

"What would you do with the last hour of your life?"... I'm not sure, but I highly doubt I'd achieve true greatness like this amazing young man did. I hope you rest in paradise, hero!!!
