Great video! I actually use my spade shovel more than any tool 😅. I dug up my entire yard first and took out old irrigation lines, changed the slope of my yard, etc. One thing I would recommend is finding out everything in your ground before you plant. I found an old kerosene tank full of kerosene for home heating and a huge propane tank industrial size for gas (no company in town had a record of it so I had it removed)

LOL! One persons useless tool is another's essential tool! I legitimately laughed when I read this. Whoa on the kerosene tank! That is crazy!

@@WildFloridian I find more weird stuff every day 😅. By far my most useful tool to date. I totally reformed my landscape making terraces in my backyard. Most people on flat lots don’t need to worry so much about those issues. A lot more comfort knowing the ground is free of trash.

I definitely need to invest in a rake. I’ll check out the one you showed. That little wagon looks perfect, I would love one of those, too. I agree about the upper arm strength issue. I use my shovel more than any tool, I couldn’t live without it. Haha We also just used a spade shovel to remove grass. I also love the little mini rake, I use those to chop up old potting mix in pots that’s become a bit compacted. I guess I just want all of the things. 😜

Great video! So right on the shovel vs.madox being a winter FL gardener those surface roots can be a bugger. Last Christmas received a root slayer from Radial Tool made for easy digging as well.

I was surprised about your appointment on the shovel. We use ours a lot! We have sharpened ours with a file though and it will chop through roots. We learned the sharpening trick from when we lived in Ohio. Clay soil is hell to dig through. I do agree with you about the spade working well for digging though.

The good old fashioned shovel needs more love! Once you get past the surface rocks/roots/debris, can you really dig deep with a mattock? I’m going to follow your suggestion and start using a mattock because I do run into a lot of obstacles within the first couple of inches, but once I dig a little deeper, the shovel does great with my sandy soil.

That's true... once I get past 6 inches to a foot it can get easier... but then I'm usually done. I fully support your shovel use :D

For me, the biggest unlock this year was the auger. It allows me to dig and move some of the soil around. I did not know we had those fruit pickers here in the US. The last time I saw one was in my grandma's garden in Panama.

I just treated myself to a new pair of Felco hand pruners... Bought my last pair in 1998 for $70, lasted that long with heavy use. New pair was $40 on EBay, gave my old pair to my son and he uses them now. Have you tried out that grafting tool? It cuts the branches like Lego- I learned grafting using knives and carry a couple of small scars on my fingers from days gone by. Just curious if you've tried them or seen how they produce. Happy Gardening! I use pruners for cuttings and have never grafted. So a new adventure for me to take one day! That is so cool that your hand pruners lasted so long!

LOL! I misplace them from time to time. I have a garden bag that I throw the tools into or the yard cart as I move around. BUT Ben has to help me find the smaller hand tools.

I use all the tools you have recommend . Great! I have a question. Do you garden for food in you front yard? We have a very small yard and removing a large tree in front yard. Thinking about extending food gardening "tastefully" in front yard. I wonder what neighbors will think! Will native Florida plants grow well with vegetable plants?

Our vegetable garden is in the front yard... no missing it when neighbors walk by. Most neighbors like it. Only one has complained to the city and that was about the trellis... but it isn't a violation. I have had people approach and say they are so excited about what we are doing. What has been interesting is how supportive people are... even if they don't want to do the same in their yard. It is really about normalizing making yards more functional. Just know that if you aren't in a HOA you are protected under Florida Senate Bill 82. I have a video about it in the Victory Garden playlist on the legality of vegetable gardens. And yes, Florida native plants are great to grow along with a vegetable garden. I would just make clear spaces for each... natives usually are easy to self seed and may get in the way... but they make great companion plants. I have a video on native companion plants.
