My dad was a prog rock musician and fan. I was so lucky to be raised on a word as simple as YES. I’ve been blessed to see them probably 20 times since 1992. They only get better. Keys to ascension in 97, The ladder, magnification, they just kept making more good music. It breaks my heart we’ve lost Alan and Chris, but YES will love forever. I’m so happy for your discovery. This band will be with you forever…

I was @ Woodstock 99. I was in the pit of Pantera before far beyond driven before it came out, @ age 15. I saw an unsigned Korn perform as well as House of Pain before they became Everlast & Limp Bizkit. I miss the Roseland. Where underage misfits under the LIRR banner all congregated @ penn station for the 2:45 train East. Per every time I was in Penn Station between 1993 & 2002 I knew someone each time I passed thru. “I know how bribes work” in old School. She was 1 year younger than me In High school and she was the last person I randomly bumped into for the 2:45 train to LI. You are the best S. T.!

It is such a pleasure to see someone your age "get" YES so intensely. The way you react confirms what my generation (I'm 61) felt half a century ago. It makes us feel--I should say, it reminds us--that we invested ourselves in something of real quality and lasting value. I would also say that your allowing yourself to be so emotionally transparent is rather brave--and, entirely the point of a "reaction video." I don't know you, of course; and, yet it is as if we have a grande thing in common. May God Bless you; and, may the music continue to enhance your life.

One of my favourites is this. Takes liberties with most peoples musical conventions and sensibilities but, to my ears, facinating , punchy , dramatic, creative and the group just amazing here, a stunning piece. And like most yes music, it never ages, it merely stimulates questions like: just how the hell did they put this together ? because, its pure genuius.

My friend, you have just found the song that started Yes to realize that that their individual genius combined could lead to something magical. There is a journey from ctte,to Awaken that will change your life. They understand that combined, they can share the truth with you. Believe it, 1st law of thermodynamics, energy is a constant, can't be destroyed, can only change form. Jon knows that, his lyrics changed my life. Not ever afraid of life's problems. Not afraid of anything. Life will go on. Beautiful music and lyrics changed me into the positive and loving man I am today. Welcome aboard.

This is another Yes classic, so far ahead of its time in a different place. I remember playing Fragile with my group of friends. It was awesome then as it is now. Pope if you really like these Yes songs you really need to do whole albums to get the full impact. We did, every time they released a new album. We played albums time and time again. You need to do the whole album with; The Yes Album, Fragile, Close to the Edge, Relayer; Going for the One and Yessongs live. For someone new to Yes Tales from Topographic Oceans should be checked out one side at a time. But take the ride check out all their material until 1977. For South Side of the Sky great reaction my friend. It is so awesome to see you react like we did all those years ago.

Love your reactions to YES. Southside of the Sky is definitely one of my favourites among the plethora of incredible music that YES created...the drum work by Bill Bruford, who ended up leaving for King Crimson not long after Fragile, did some incredible work on this piece...in fact all pieces he was involved with...I heard he and Squires had a lot of disagreements but Squires acquiesced often to Bruford since he was usually right...keep up the great work Mr Pope your reactions are bang on and priceless!

Hey Buddy, great reaction to one of my Yes favorites, time you ventured onto the album after Close to the Edge, Tales from Topographic Oceans which were 4 full LP side epics in a double album which overall differs a bit from their previous material, being quite experimental and generally more expansive. Their best known piece and my favorite from the album is "The Revealing Science of God", would also recommend "Ritual". The album Relayer follows this which is an absolute Yes Classic and different again, featuring new keyboardist Patrick Moraz. The opening track "Sound Chaser" is a super intensive marriage of Prog Rock and Jazz Fusion which will blow your socks off!! The epic on the album is "Gates of Delirium" which is right up there with the greatest of all Yes pieces, the slow piece "To be over" is also magnificent. Keep enjoying your Yes journey!

Hearing Yes for the first time in the early 70's as a young teenager is what inspired me to learn how to play guitar. When I first heard Yours is No Disgrace, I thought that the fast arpeggio part during the verses (after the singing) was a keyboard. It blew my mind when someone told me it was the guitar. I had never heard anyone play guitar like that. I just HAD to learn how to play like that - I had no choice in the matter!! So, my musical journey commenced and, while I'm not quite as good as Mr. Howe, playing guitar and composing are still much fun after all these years. So, I totally get your reactions to Yes. Their music definitely makes you think about stuff like the meaning of life, the cosmos, other worlds and other possibilities.

You are one of my favorite reaction masters. Because it gives me joy to see your complete bodily and spiritually inhabitation of the music. At times it's like you are having a religious experience.(For me that's what it is). And I know exactly what it feels like to have music effect you that way. It reminds me of how I felt as a kid. But it's more intense as an adult because we are more in tune with our emotions and appreciative of the beauty of the world and it's people.

First concert I ever went to was Yes in 1974, Roy Galleger and Edward Winter opened. IT COMPLETELY BLEW MY MIND. I had been a fan for years but never saw them live. They were doing Yessongs that tour and I don't think I listened to anything else for months. It should be said that they late 60's early 70's were such a fertile time for great music... The soul and funk music scene itself with acts like Marley, Wonder, Gaye, Mayfield and more. The acoustic and folk rock scene was also flourishing and. of course, hard rock, glam, shock rock, etc. were all producing mind-blowing material. It was great to be listening deeply to music for the first time with so much to explore..At the time YES didn't attract much diversity in their audience - it was mainly young, fairly educated, (ahem), white guys so it's very cool to see the appeal can cross cultural and generational boundaries.
@rembeadgc
@rembeadgc 2 жыл бұрын
Cultural forces based on a group approach to handling uncomfortable history, IMO, impeded the development of Yes' multi-ethnic audience. By the time most of us reached a certain age...we understood the English language, Western thought, European based melody and harmony and basic mythology and some form of "Judeo/Christian" religious thought; all the necessary basic ingredients to understand Yes or most prog. But due to a focus on pro-afro-based music as a response to "group history", music from outside the culture was often frowned upon. I think it was a sad move, but at the same time I understand it. In private, I loved what I loved and listened to what I wanted to listen to. Yes was in that mix way back then. It's interesting and heartening to see young people who didn't grow up through the 60's and 70's respond to this music without the same cultural "baggage" that many of us carried. It is what it is. It all teaches us something about our humanity.

That's right Bruh. Feel it like it's supposed to be felt. Not just heard, but felt. Been vibing that since the 70's. I will say that Yes and a lot of great prog rock does often put you in touch with your soul in ways that a lot of other music doesn't, and that's okay. Some music puts you more in touch with your body, some with your heart and some with your soul. For me, music (and many other things) that put me in touch with my soul (a lot of which Yes produced) helped confirm my belief in the Divine, because, as you said, "you can't make this stuff up". Something in it that came through those musicians to you, came from somewhere else...and not nowhere. Peace.

While you have certainly displayed a special receptivity to the music of YES, I would be carefully selective where you take the next steps in the journey. Some of the suggestions below seem to me like saying, "Oh, you like Bud Light? Then you'll love Jameson! Drink a gallon right now! Warm!" "Tales from Topographic Oceans," "Relayer," and certain songs from other albums need to be consumed only when you build up into them. Truly, your appreciation of this band is mind-blowing and culture crossing! I absolutely love music and its among the most important things in my life, but YES is the only thing I have tattooed on my body. (Their iconic Roger Dean logo.)

I couldn't agree with this more, when you first hear these masterpieces, you might think they are all like that. I love all of their music but take your time. The band has many incarnations and not everyone likes all of them. In the mid 90's they released 2 live albums with some new studio tracks, the Keys To Ascension albums which gives you an idea how well they could pull off these masterworks live. Also the new tracks on these albums shows that they could still produce some amazing long songs. Mind Drive is quite a piece to listen to, especially the improved guitar solo sections, very surprising. Have fun listening to all of the great Yes music.

I would like to recommend a song by Yes from the same year (1971) to you. "America" (be careful, there is a short version of the song. The correct one is 10 minutes). This is a cover of the Simon & Garfunkel song of the same name, but not much is left of the original. The song is a bit "lighter" in terms of mood, but it exudes so much joie de vivre, joy of playing and a good mood that I have to smile just when I think of the song.
