“Ester” imperfect vs preterite was driving me crazy. This has been the best video I’ve found to clearly explain this. Thank you so much. Now I have to come to grip with “Ser” in the imperfect vs perfect!!

If you are 'still learning' then your use of *aprendi* is incorrect, as that tense pertains to a closed time frame. Keep learning. Good luck.

Prior to this video I watched your video on era vs fue and finally understood when to use each but now, listening to this one, I'm confused when you use era vs estaba and/or fue vs estuvo. I'm not sure I'm ever going to get a grip on this verb 🤷‍♀

Primero vi el vídeo sobre los verbos; era y fue. Acabo de ver este vídeo sobre los verbos; estaba y estuvo. Ambos vídeos parecen decirme las mismas cosas. ¡Ahora tengo un gran dolor de cabeza! No es culpa de la profesora Brenda, es mío. No tengo problemas para entender la diferencia entre los verbos ser y estar en tiempo presente, pero ahora me siento perdido en el pasado nuevamente. ¡No voy a rendir! 😣

@@Jonesislearning Don't stress too much about this and grammar in general. Look into comprehensible input and language acquisition. With time you will acquire nuances like this one and be able to produce them naturally. I listen to Spain content primarily so I always hear fue or era used in this sentence. But in other parts of Latin America using estar is also acceptable. Immersion is key, not stressing about grammar from what I learned.

It has to be 2018-2019 if you want to make it specific enough to use pretérito. El año pasado - has a start and an ending to it. When you say 2018, it's the duration of whole year that you're referring to.
@Jonesislearning
@Jonesislearning 7 ай бұрын
No no no, cuando dice “ Ana estaba en la universidad” uno es describiendo la ubicación de Ana. Entonces puedes usar ambos “estaba y estuvo,” para describir la ubicación o…y el tiempo ella tenía aya no?

It seems to me that if you know Spanish well enough to understand everything she's saying, then you probably know the difference between these two words. I am only on chapter 1 part 10 of my book. I don't understand Spanish well enough to understand any of what she's saying. Do you usually learn this word much later?
@Alterbridge321
@Alterbridge321 3 жыл бұрын
Not much later, I wouldn’t say. Saying “was” is as useful in Spanish as it is in English, but you could probably put it off for a little longer. There’s some more basic grammar that should be learned first.
@Gerard_2024
@Gerard_2024 Жыл бұрын
Yes, you do hear those words as soon as you begin to understand spoken Spanish, but how to use them correctly and understand the difference? No. you need an erudite native speaker (preferably with an educated knowledge of English) to give you a systematic and detailed "insider" explanation, similar to the one offered in this excellent and exemplary video.

People who watch this are doing it to learn Spanish as they don't know it presently - so why speak so fast in the language which the people do not yet understand? I realise you are trying to challenge the viewers, but slow it down for Gods' sake! And it wouldn't hurt to use a bit of English, as the video is aimed at English speakers learning Spanish.
