We meet a gardener who finally quit trying to grow grass in his shady backyard. Instead, he encouraged and embellished the moss that was appearing there. The result is a green and gorgeous moss lawn that he says is easy to maintain.

I've been thinking of this shit for a while on my own. Just kept seeing some moss in my yard and thinking how soft it is compared to the grass and how it stays short and whatnot, thinking to myself "why tf don't people just have lawns like this?". So I started thinking maybe I should try it, which is what brought me to look this up and see if people have done it. So far it's only confirming what I suspected, that it's probably the best yard you can possibly make. Have any of y'all walked barefoot on some soft moss like that? It feels like walking on a cloud lol. Honestly seems so much better than a grass lawn, I really can't even see a downside.

I didn't know about the moss beer in a blender but I knew about the moss buttermilk in a blender then painted over trees and rocks for moss to grow keep in mind moss prefer shaded areas and moist grounds they can creep up trees and rocks if the ground in the area has a lot of moist grounds you can probably do that by installing a drip system soaker hoses or a sprinkler and timer to keep the ground moist but not soaked. I love the way moss looks in the forest on trees or rocks

Or even if moss won’t grow where you live, just don’t bother mowing the grass. Unless you live in a strict HOA, no one is forcing you to mow ;) Maintaining a grass lawn is a cultural convention started by rich aristocrats a few hundred years ago to show-off how much excess land they had that they could afford to leave fallow. Plus in my opinion wild grass and flowers (aka “weeds”) look much better to me than a manicured grass lawn.

Moss in my garden enjoys a lot of sunlight in the summer. It does help that we get a lot of rain in Ireland. An evening sprinkle of water from a watering can is enough to keep it green when hosepipes are banned. Lots of different varieties of moss means that there's one for every location. Just look for what is already trying to grow in your garden. A bit of work in the short term leads to less and less work in the medium term. I've found that for every weekly hour I used to spend just mowing grass, I now spend less than an hour a month maintaining moss. Mostly with a watering can. Free time is too valuable to waste on pointless labours.

Yes!!! Looking to moss our entire front yard this year. We have 2 huge sugar maples up front that create so much shade, grass doesn't grow anyhow and there's tree roots everywhere. We also have a half-crumbled retaining wall and I'd like to hold it together with moss as well. Gonna take some of the moss up front and make a slurry and see what grows ☺ Glad to see this is becoming more popular!!! ❤

Get some tarp covering the grass it should kill it off? Rake it out see if you can find some ripe sporophytes from the lawn moss you could make a large watering can full of thousands of spores over the raked ground keep it moist regularly for a few weeks and small growth should appear That's what I'd try at first anyway 🤔
