Ester Rolle portrayed Florida Evans on Maude before Good Times with John Amos portraying her husband. The only thing was that his name was Henry instead of James and he was a fireman who worked part time as a cab driver and the Evans family lived in Harlem, NY instead of Chicago, IL...

Looking back now, I can see how much Norman Lear didn't like having a father figure on the show. He kept James down and scraping just to get by. Any good things that happened to the family weren't due to James. They were due to luck by Florida or JJ. And it wasn't until James died on the show, that good things did start happening to the family. At least they didn't have James just walk out on his family.

Norman Lear created his series with intelligence and he pursued a vision of taking stereotypic stock characters like the archetype American bigot or the archetype American feminist and turning them upside down and fleshing these two-dimensional figures into real people with aspirations, problems, and a past. That's exactly what Esther Rolle and John Amos signed up for when they decided to create a real marriage, in a working family, ifn an urban setting. Unfortunately some of that vision got lost, when the writers began to succumb to corporate pressures and produced scripts designed for the highest possible ratings every single week and the least credible or rounded character got the oversized screen time. yes its a testament to Jimmy Walker's talent as a comic actor that he was able to carry a half hour sitcom as long as he did, but the balance and vision was missing, and the plotting suffered.

I simply loved every aspect of this show except for the ridiculous character of JJ which is why I can't stomach the reruns today. Here you got a poor black trying to make it out of the ghetto with two of the kids having true goals in life to make that happen yet they focus 💯% on the silly antics of the oldest who a goofball and not even funny. To this day I hate the word dynamite. I knew after John Amos was gone the show was a wrap. Bernadette is still a dime. P.S., gotta give major props to Jimmy Walker though on his portrayal of Bootney Farnsworth in the hilarious outrageous comedy Let's Do It Again😂😆😅😂 Now he truly axed that portrayal. Just imagine skinny little JJ in the boxing ring knocking dudes the size Floyd Mayweather out😆😆😆 Ridiculously and unimaginable but it was so cleverly and phenomenally done. One of the absolutely best comedies ever 🌹 Rest In Paradise Howard Rollins 🌹

@@heavenawilson5140 The word of the day is COMPREHENSION☝ I was initially attacking JJ not Jimmy. The character was ridiculous, annoying and not funny what so ever and I'm quite sure I'm not the only one who has that view which is why John Amos and Esther Rolle were so furious 😵 with the producers which led to John's firing which gave JJ move room to holla dynamite more regularly which eventually got the show cancelled. If this was comedic relief I'll take pain and sorrow. Jimmy Walker was a comedic phenomenon as Bootney Farnsworth in the 70's comedy Let's Do It Again but as JJ Evans he was a buffoon.

Because I remember the main characters on One Day At a Time, Kate and Allie and Gilmore Girls were single moms and those shows were hits.

What is wrong with being black, female, AND HAVING A HUSBAND?????????? Too many people seem to think that black women don't get married. We do.
