Cool Forgotten Weapons merch! shop.bbtv.com/collections/forg...
Estonia purchased several batches of early FN High Power pistols in the 1930s. First in 1936 120 were ordered for the police, and then much larger orders followed in 1937. The military bought 5,338 and the Home Guard bought an additional 3,038. Both batches have their own serial number ranges, and the military guns are identified by an “EV” (Eesti Vabariik) marking on the backstop, while the Home Guard guns are marked “KL” (Kaitseliit). The guns have 500m tangent sights and stock slots. No holsters or stock were ordered from FN, but the Estonian arsenal at Tallinn manufactured some 3,150 shoulder stocks as well as spare parts for the guns. Apparently there was a plan to start making complete guns there under license, but the occupation in 1940 interrupted them.

Fun fact about Estonia: Finland and Estonia are currently in a booze war. Estonia lowered their alcohol tax to increase Finnish tourism, Finland responded by making travel more difficult (trains suck).
@romka_ind
@romka_ind 4 жыл бұрын
The story of this booze war is quite funny. Finns always came to Tallinn to buy booze here. You always could see people with carts full of long drink or vodka going towards harbor in the city, it kind a the same near the harbor to this day. But problem came when the government decided to lower booze use in the country, it was quite high if you sum those Finns that are exporting it everday home. So they raised the taxes on booze. But then Finns and also local Estonians started to trip to Latvia cause they had theirbooze for even less money than here :) So everybody drinks the same but Latvuans make now money on taxes instead of Estonians. I heard government thinks to lower the taxes or it is already done I'm not sure. The cheapest booze is ofcourse in Russia but you need a Visa to get there.

Last year we took the ferry from Tallinn to Helsinki. It was filled with Finns that Had enjoyed the lower cost Beer and Vodka for the weekend. They were bringing special grocery carts that held 3 cases of beer and 3 liters of alcohol. They got their deposit back plus a free case of beer when thev returned The next weekend for the new party.

Bit of correction from estonian: Estonia became independent in 1918. Independence was declared in 24th february 1918 (actually independence manifesto was read out already in 23rd), but since german forces occupied Estonia the very next day, de facto independence arrived in 11th november 1918 after Germany surrendered in ww1 and had to give up its conquests. International regognition (officially) arrived in 2nd february 1920, when soviet russia and Estonia were in fact first countries to officially regognise eachother with a treaty, although de facto regognition arrived immideatly after gaining independence due to work from estonian diplomats (hell, french and british were among first ones to regognise us, alongside Finland of course, which was apparent trough british and finnish substantial help during independence war) Goverment system was not unstable during independence, what was, however, was goverments themselves. And while it is true that we ended up with dictatorship, it wasnt military one. Also it lasted not until 1938, but until 1940, when Estonia was occupied by USSR. As for pronounciation, its quite good

15 year old, cadet force, helping out in RAF armory. Reward, using stuff on the range. Browning automatic pistol, first shot hits figure 11 smack in the belly, second shot his him in the head, third shot hits half way up the range back wall, fourth shot goes over the wall and heads out towards the far end of the airfield. Later we clean sterlings, my buddy points one at me and pulls the trigger ‘to test the safety’- THEN we find a round jammed in the breach.

Estonia was "liberated" by Germany during Barbarossa in 1941, and I'm guessing every weapon they had on hand was used by the germans. Given that Germany used a lot of hi-powers themselves I'm pretty sure a lot of estonian guns must've been issued to german troops; later on those might have seen action in the western front and an american GI must've taken one of them during the last months of the war and then brought it home. It's a shot in the dark, yet that's the best scenario that I can think of on how did that weapon get into the US ;).

Yes, all were made locally, at the State Saddlery Workshops. They were generally hated and called "logs". Everybody who had the means had a normal holster made. What the actual differences to the original FN-made stock are, I could not tell as I have never seen the original.
