Nice job, I've restored several Estwing leather gripped tools. Trial and error to start, progressively got better. Tools now look almost factory made. just finished a hammer from 01/39. I use lacquer to finish grips. Two dips with sanding in between looks nice.

Great video! I’m in the middle of restoring an old hammer myself. Found it in the crawl space of our 1910 house. It says the manufacture date was 10/1959. I still have some black spots to get off, but I’m planning to add a two toned wood handle made of white oak and walnut.

Hey may i ask question? I own stanley hammer and it has ping sound whenever I pound a nail some say that its a sign of a good hammer.. do you agree?? Thanks for your beautiful video
@poppastools8177
@poppastools8177 2 жыл бұрын
Sorry for replying to this so late, I've been quite busy with my studies! To be honest I'm not sure what makes a good hammer, I don't have much experience working with/restoring tools, but not only is the ping sound satisfying but I would guess that it tells you that it's a solidly built hammer! (e.g., nothing loose rattling around to dull the vibration)

Nice work man! I plan on doing the same restoration on my dads old Estwing he bought in the USA in the late 80s (we live in Sweden). I was just wondering how thick leather you used for the handle?
@poppastools8177
@poppastools8177 2 жыл бұрын
That's awesome to hear! The leather I used was 5mm thick, but I just bought offcut leather from a local leather store because it was cheap, so I would say work with whatever you have access to :)

I doubt you could buy replacement rings, but in my area you can buy sheets of acrylic plastic in different colours from artist's supply stores - if I had to remake one of the rings my plan was to buy one of those and then cut the rings myself

Not enough high tech high priced tools in your shop. These repair videos need those so one can feel intimidated and inferior to the film maker. Your video looks just too basic and plain ordinary, like most guy’s shops. Please go spend lots of money to upgrade yourself!

@@SimonPollock I found a wholesale leather supplier in my area and asked for some of their offcut leather - it's incredibly cheap and perfect for stacked leather handles since you're just going to turn it into washers anyway (the leather I used in this video cost me less than $5!)
