ePLA-LW is filament designed by eSun for drone parts or model airplanes since it's density may be less than half of the regular PLA. Density of the filament can be controlled by printing temperature. Above 220°C it starts foaming (expanding), so we can reduce extrusion rate, but the final volume will be the same. In this video I tested the printability and strength of this filament and compared to eSun PLA+.

Excellent analysis, was looking for something like this for e sun filaments.

Great work! One thing to consider with the test samples is that they typically have a specific shape for each kind of test. For example in an impact test, the specimen is notched so that the test sample breaks in a specific place and results can be repeated. For what you are doing, the differences are dramatic so directionally the results are correct. Thanks for the video!

Thank you, I have seen your video and my question has been solved. Although the breaking strength is weaker than PLA or PLA+, the light weight is an advantage.

Wow, thanks a lot for your experiment with this material. It gave me a very good idea on how to use it. I just bought a spool of this LW filament today, with the intention of making wingtips for my Foam RC planes. So nice that it can be light weight. But now I'm worried that it cannot take hot temperature inside my car. 🤣🤣 I live in the Philippines, it can get very hot here especially during summer the inside of a car is like an oven.

Thanks for an informative video that provided answers to many of my questions. I became very enthusiastic when I first heard about lightweight filaments. But after watching this video, I'm almost disillusioned. With such poor strength, I can’t find any applications. If I e.g. want to print a model aircraft, I can with the same weight get a more durable construction with conventional filament with honeycomb pattern as reinforcement.

Now lightweight carbon fiber :p lol I actually tried printing some parts last night with Carbon fiber ASA, and I am not sure if it was my layer adhesion, although the print looked perfect, but i wasn't happy with the strength of it. quite surprised. off topic.. but great video thanks for putting the stats out there for this filament

Tons of good info here, thank you! I wonder about retraction though. You say not to use it, but that might fix the stringing issues. Can you do a test with varying amounts of extraction to see what it does?
@MyTechFun
@MyTechFun 2 жыл бұрын
I tried with retraction too, but doesn't help, which is normal, because in nozzle the material is foamed and it cannot be normally retracted.

I wonder if this would be better than cheap natural PLA for lost-pla casting thanks to the low density. I know there are dedicated ones, but they are not cheap.
@MyTechFun
@MyTechFun 3 жыл бұрын
PLA-LW is not cheap neither, but you can print more than 2x volume

Great tests. Was curious about the buoyancy of this light weight material. I have no need of a buoyant plastic I just wondered if it floated better than regular PLA. I think it would due to the aeration. What do you think? Great video. Keep it lit.
@MyTechFun
@MyTechFun 3 жыл бұрын
Thx. Not sure about buoyancy, but the surface is not so smooth. BUT it can be easily painted or lacquering for smooth surface..

How do I get the wall thickness to increase. I printed a test box from 230 to 270 in 10 degree increments and really didn’t see a an big difference. Printing on a Anycubic Kobra direct drive. I printed a plane from 3d lab print. The weight of each piece was correct but the walls were thin by 1/2. It’s almost paper like rather than plastic. Any help is greatly appreciated

It would have been interesting (to me :-D) to see the testing done with specimens of a comparable *weight*. So the layer adhesion test with an approx 6*6 neck instead of 4*4

PLA-LW would be weaker (as you can see, the strength is less than half, but weight is half). This material is only for weight reducing.

I think the real strength of this filament is with those ultra optimized honeycomb type designs that maximise strength for less weight.

Another channel says a single layer of epoxy resin strengthens lw pla more than a single layer of epoxy would strengthen pla due to the lw pla porosity. The strength same strength tests would be interesting and weight comparisons. Ultimately they are supposed to be used for different purposes so lw will never be as strong

last 3 rolls e sun lw pla had burnt brown pieces throughout the roll, which are then very visible in the prints a big production defect in my opinion e sun's reaction was try to brush it off!! downright ridiculous reaction of course go for it also stop using and back to color fab
