This video is a review of DMI (Driver Machine Interface) of ETCS (European Train Control System). The video contains two parts: first is with the road view, and second, at 35:46 , close view and more detailed explanation about DMI. Both were filmed during two night rides to Jerusalem. If my voice makes you feel sick in the first part - just jump to the second part - there are only subtitles . I know, my English leaves to be desire, so please, excuse my mistakes and pronunciation.
ETCS is a part of ERTMS ( European Train Management System). For my opinion it's a perfect safety system and takes IR in to the smarter future of Industry. The system still uses signals, but I believe, after five years we won't need signals anymore. Hope you'll enjoy and don't forget to like, subscribe ant comment!

Is it a coincidence that the Signals look almost exactly like the older Signals in Germany? Apart from the identical ETCS and even the same trains that also run here.

Does the train detect the distance to brake from the balises on the rails, or does the DMI unit on the set adjust it with the help of Gsmr? And I also noticed, how do you know which speed you will slow down before reaching the speed limits? The system says you will reduce the speed, but you have already dropped to those speeds.
@SergeyShvyrev
@SergeyShvyrev 9 ай бұрын
Thank you for your questions. First of all, the system knows what's the max brake efforts that train set has and what's the actual and future gradients and it uses balises (exact place of the train). It uses GSMR just to know where is the train that before and who's about a route. Second. The drivers always know the line and speed limits. It's possible to drive according to the brake curves (grey, white or yellow lines on the speed scale) if you need to move as fast as possible. But in this case it was a test drive, so the driver prefers to drive slower.

Hello Sergey, thanks for your extensive presentation of ETCS, I liked this one and do not worry about your English, The only problem that I see with ETCS is that especially in freight service it enforces you to creep slowly towards stop signal wasting some energy. This means you basically brake hard to let's say 20 km/h few hundred meters before stop signal, which forces you to apply power again after braking in order to reach that signal and use brakes once more. Without ETCS you would either start braking more gently in advance let's say only using dynamic brake, or brake harder later (especially when there is excellent adhesion), but in both cases you won't need any power to coast to the signal. Second thing is that ETCS equipment for locomotives / EMUs is expensive or impossible to install (especially older rolling stock). If ETCS is deployed in Czechia, many locomotive series will be scrapped and this will make impossible to have nostalgic rides with steam locomotives or historic vehicles. The same scenario would have been also in the Israel, I think old EMD locomotives would be candidates for scrapping as soon as ETCS will become only available ATP on Israeli tracks. However on the other hand ETCS brings more safety (you cannot pass red sign), all important information (speed limits, neutral sections and other important information) is transferred into cab and is visible even if there is fog, dense rain / fog, basically like track monitor feature in Microsoft train simulator. And if European countries will shift to this ATP including GSM-R for data and voice trasfer, finally international train services become easier to implement, since you do not have worry about dozens of incompatible ATPs and you save time by being able to use same locomotive let's say from Paris up to Bratislava :) Erev tov from Prague CZ :)

Thank you for an interesting comment! Really love Chehia and especially Prague. I was there at least 6 times and also Liberec, Usti nad Labem, Pilzen and more! IR decided to use a passive ETCS on old locomotives. It means, the system (ertms) knows where each Rolling stock is, including track maintenance units. I really like this system, but I think, it will take at least 1 year until we'll start use it. I'm a rail accident ivestigator, so I wait for it more then someone else, couse I 'm too lazy to investigate SPAD (signal passed at danger) accidents

Thanks for informative comments. In short what you are describing here is the evolution process of going from man handled train to automation system one. As drawback of ETCS can be diminished by tuning the system. But efficiency of that process is determined by the level ETCS integration with train. That's, more I/O/s you have in disposal more fine you process is.

I can't agree with braking more gently in advance without ETCS. The Brake curve is based on your train's braking power anyway, and you can see the End of Authority (basically "Red signal") up to 32km before you actually see the Signal warning you about a red, so never in any case would you receive more warning just by relying on signals compared to being shown where the next Stop is on ETCS. So you shouldn't be surprised by a brake curve, and don't forget that you are given notice before the brake curve starts anyway. The Brake Curve towards an End of Authority usually stops at 10-20km/h depending at what the Signal is guarding, so you can still roll close to the signal, and this "Release Speed" is not massively far away from the Signal anyway.

@@SergeyShvyrev Thanks for this amazing view...wanted to know more about etcs...when it is commissioned I presume that means the trains will be able to accelerate immediately a signal clears and they won't have to wait till they pass a magnet to release the restrictive speed. That should help a lot even without having moving blocks...(which would of course be ideal especially in the Ayalon bottleneck, but is presumably not even being talked about).

Hi Sergey! What exactly are neutral zones? Is that a safety configuration like the speed limits, or are these areas that technically don't have enough power supply for traction? Does if affect diesel trains as well? Thanks again for sharing this content
@SergeyShvyrev

Thank you for your question! Neutral zones are isolated sections between 2 phases of power supply. The have no affect the diesel trains, but electric train has to pass it with no traction

They are used to separate two power loops in one system, and must be isolated hence neutral section for the purpose. Train should coast (not applying power) thru the section and must not stop in the zone at any cost. If the train happens to stop, then it must be pushed forward by another train till it clears the zone
