The series deserves a comeback. Eternal Champions can easily become a great rival to Mortal Kombat. Heck, EC did the martial art styles and "multiple fatalities per stage" before MK.

Fulgore2005 Honestly, this original IS the rival to the original MK. Wider array of fighting styles, more interesting characters, and far more delicious fatalities here. Only thing questionable today is that horrid CGI

Decapre Such different times it was for violent content back then. The MA-13 was pretty much the equivalent to M despite the "13". I'm glad my mom was smart about ratings even before the esrb because this game would have scarred me for life!

I was only like 6 when the Genesis version came out and so glad I got to play it back then. same for mk1-umk3 on Genesis as well... although Mortal Kombat was only mediocre back then. also Doom and Duke Nukem... but that's irrelevant to this.

Yeah. The CD version was M. The genesis one which is significantly less gorey (but still somewhat for the time anyway) was T I believe.

That stage has another one where the car driving past has some gangsters lean out the window and riddle you with bullets.

I think being it being a Sega exclusive and no arcade release dealt it as big a blow as the VF 'favorite child' treatment.

Actually its quit simple why it didn't last long in Japan, the game is to violent. In Japan violence is seen the same way as sexyness is seen in the west, nearly a taboo.

DiGi Valentine the problem was that Nintendo kept coming out with games and Sega kept coming out with systems if they could have figured out a way to incorporate the Sega CD and the X32 and maybe what the Saturn was trying to become all-in-one system it would have stomped everything else. I don't know why they didn't just come out with a system that you could play everything in CDs cartridges just make it one unit.

I find that ironic considering SEGA hasn't released a new Virtua Fighter for I think 8 years now.

Yup. At least. The irony is that SEGA was trying to out "over the top" MK for some of that sweet, sweet MK pie but became mostly ignored and niche due to the fighting game glut and I don't think SEGA made a version for the arcades, so sadly a lot of people missed out on one of the more responsive and combo heavy "also-rans" amongst the fighting games of that generation.

Virtua fighter was balls

Honestly liked virtua fighter.

It had a British comic series that expanded on it but it was super short lived. There was gonna be a whole franchise including tons of spin off games, a Saturday morning cartoon, a movie, toys, and a part 3 on the Sega Saturn that never happened because Japan didn't want it competing with Virtua Fighter. Now Sega of Japan is hurting for IPs and is finally bringing it back!!!

Andrey Kusanagi We were really proud of the SEGA CD version...thing was the platform was dead when the game came out so, yes, many more people played and know of the Genesis rather than the CD version.

Well it's just like the game Skitchin' immediately people were saying oh it's just a such and such clone and never took the time to play and appreciate the game. Eternal Champions was a hard game to play, and maybe that's what put people off. But once you get the combos down pat/learn the deep move list you can do some crazy things.

The major problem was that almost no one bought the Sega CD, so there was no market for this version.

It was supposed to be worse. A lot worse. SEGA was trying to out "MK" MK. It was your typical money grab that turned out to be made by some very creative, passionate, and very good, Street Fighter fans.

Loved this game as a kid. Another one I was into about that time was Battle Arena Toshinden. Loved that game.

Sean Mcfarland right? the characters and stages in this game were so obscure and unique. blew my mind back in the day. I didn't play B.A.T very much, but I remember it being pretty good on Saturn. such a shame Sega ran themselves into the ground... so many great consoles.

It's broken as hell but pretty unique. There's no other fighter like it.

^--- what this guy said, lol tha problem for some tho is that WeaponLord isn't a normal 'pick-up-n-play' fighter, you actually had 2 learn tha mechanics of it to fully get tha most out of playin' it [i believe it was tha 1st fighter to have a parry system], & maaaan, was it ever worth it. it's still tha only fighter i kno whose fatality system is pretty much free-ranged, where u were allow'd to do more than just 1 linear thing to tha opponent for their death. also, when you think about it, with tha way tha fatality system is, it had brutalities [going by how you have to perform/activate'em in MKX by doin' certain moves while an opponent's near death] before brutalities existed. WeaponLord's a fighter that was truly ahead of its time.
