12:03 Actually it is poppy seeds. 14:56 Pergalė is a brand name of the sweets/chocolate. It means 'Victory". "Grūdėta" means "granular". I was never a fan of "Nomeda", i'm not a fan now. But they have been for a while so for young adults it's a nostalgic taste, when there were not that many options in the past. "Kregždutė" means swallow bird. Hence the packaging. My most liked candies as a kid were "Pupa" (meaning "Bean") and "Ananasas" (meaning "Pineapple"). If you google it, write the name of the candy and add "saldainis" (meaning "a sweet"). That's how you narrow it down/seperate from actual beans and pineapples.

grūdėta varškė is THE BEST thing in the morning, especially with fresh berries or jam :)

Add jam to the granular cottage cheese, that's how I always eat it.

Surelis are some of my favorite things in the world. So many different flavors to choose from! My Lithuanian friend calls them "chocolate cheeses". I love them so much.

Hi there. Have you tried the herring? In 2019, I spent a month in Vilnius learning the Lithuanian language, and my favorite part of grocery shopping was that Maxima had an ENTIRE REFRIGERATOR CASE of pickled herring (marinuota silkė). My mother's Lithuanian-American family always had pickled herring on a cracker at holiday gatherings, but I found that they have so many ways to marinate herring, and I liked trying them all (usually on some of the great bread they make). The silkė in Lithuania is definitely less strongly pickled than the stuff you get in the U.S., and comes with various accompaniments, chopped onion, mushroom, etc. I seem to recall that Močiutės Silkė (grandma's herring) had some tomato in with it (or maybe carrots). Great stuff, and a very satisfying meal unto itself. My fridge always had a least one tub of silkė. Good luck with your stay in Lietuva.

Fish jerky is not a Lithuanian thing but it's popular here. Try freshly smoked fish at any sea resort. Nida or Palanga. Linksmučiai are goodish but like others pointed out it's not The grybukai. Grūdėta varškė also sold with prepacked jams.

I’ve been able to find an equivalent tothe “cheesecake like bar” in my local market in Massachusetts. It’s sold as Clio bar in the yoghurt aisle. Strawberry, honey, coffee, blueberry, vanilla. Best gira (my opinion 😅) that you can buy in a shop ( I’am talking about shops like maxima, rimi, lidl and etc) is at Lidl. It is called Daujėnų naminė duonos gira. It is usually in the fridge at the spot where other “farmers” products are

Utena is a good option for life. I have relatives in Utena, they come to the theater or cultural event in Vilnius more often than the Vilnius residents themselves. Everything is enough for everyday life, there are shops, quiet, beautiful. And when you need culture or entertainment, you can be in Vilnius for an hour (with car).

Laura, I really recommend you to try more Lithuanian sweets. For example , honey cake (“medaus tortas”), also, branched tree cake (“sakotis”) and lazy man (“tinginys”). I know these translations sound very weird : D but all these things are super delicious! I live abroad, but I frequently go to Lithuanian shops to buy it cuz it’s so tasty:)

There is something to be said regarding the changing of the seasons...I like that. That chocolate cheese curd looked GOOD!!

When people talk about eating cucumber with honey, they mean the short bumpy garden / market cucumber (kirby) variety which you get at a farmers market, not the long tasteless thing (also called European/English/hothouse cucumber) you find at a supermarket in the middle of winter :)

Winter sometimes can be rough, but as long as there are snow its not bad :) The worst period for me is the second half of the autumn before the snow starts, because its very dark outside when there is no snow. We got quite a lot of snow last year, I wonder how this year gonna be.

Winter comes and goes, the worst part is February - April, when you are fed up of cold and waiting for spring to come and it's just never coming! Last spring was sooo cold that I considered emigrating to Bali or Mexico lol. Was sooo fed up. 😆

Tip for Lithuanian winter, it will be rain and snow and temperture goes below 0 moust of the time, so be prepaired wih good boots and wet resistend stuff, its cold if u wet if u dry u ok.

From the huge available little cheesecake selection I urge you to try the Vilkyškių 'mažiau cukraus' ones. They've got 40% less sugar, and you can taste this fresh milkiness. Other than these, Pasaka and Magija are the classics, and Nykštukas is the creamiest 😊

I would recommend Napoleonas cake, I go for it when I return to Lithuania (quite popular in cafes and bakeries). There are other traditional cakes like Dainava or Griliažinis or Medutis, if you spot them. You can also try "Skarelės" in Biržų duona bakery. From other foods I would recommend curd cheese, nowadays you can find it with different spices, apart from regular also smoked or baked cheese versions.

Try the bread - "Beatos duona". Purple packaging, 6 slices.

Expat myself, great to see you guys choosing such a random location like Utena, I mean yes Vilnius and Kaunas is a lot more western cities in terms of lifestyle and commodities, but big/major cities in any country don't always have a true face of local culture, which I believe Utena is going to offer you. When it comes to "freezing winters", I think it won't be a problem for you to adapt to it. I would probably be more worried regarding the length of the day during December and January, it's mind-boggling and can be depressing, so think about more in-house activities during that period. Cold weather you can fight with proper clothing or heating, lack of natural vitamin D - hard to deal with... When it comes to questions about: "aren't you missing..." "what are you missing..." - personally I guess you must be able to let go of the things and people in order to be a happy Expat, otherwise it's just hard to move and experience new things. P.s. My advice is to find and try properly smoked fish, you can find these in supermarkets too. But if you have some Lithuanian acquaintances, I would allow them to select one for you. P.s.s. It's way different taste/experience from "fish jerky"

A couple of years ago, I had a friend from New York, who has visited Lithuania. He said a similar thing, I am from New York, I will be fine. He ended up boring our winter clothes and he said, he never experienced such cold weather in his life :) I hope with better preparation you will be fine and enjoy snow days in Lithuania during minus 20 ;)

When winter comes, I hope you review hot chocolate and the knitting of Lithuania such as patterned mittens and also warm hand-knit sweaters, perhaps hats & scarves too.

As for seasons - i'm all in for it and understand why you wanna experience it. I love the weather change too. But the bad part is that cold, dark and rainy period here, in Lithuania, is really long. October to April (half a year) are pretty depressive. The difference between the longest day (daylight) (end of the June) and shortest day (end of December) are almost 10 hours.

1. Out of all names of foods that you tried to pronounce you apologized only for "Kregždutė" but it was actually the only word you said perfectly! 😀 2. Some people asked if you are scared of cold winters in Lith... While our winters are cold but despite to common opinion of foreigners they are not as cold as continental winters (f.e.Canada or Russia). Lith. has a maritime climate which mildens winters. Usually in a whole year will be just one month when temperature are below freezing. I am from Western (coastal) Lith and if is mostly raining here on Christmas or New Year. We don't have winters like -30 or -40°C. When I worked in USA and told ppl I am from Lith.everyone assumed that we live in terrible frost and snow all year round 😃 It is not like that, nothing to be scared of. But it is true that extreme heat is rare here, so summers are moderately warm.

I buy only home made "Gira". Big "Rimi" stores make their own drink. Try to search near bakery and salads.

"Nomeda" has a nostalgic taste because it was made in Soviet Union times and it was one of little sweets available for the public. So it is an old recipe that probably was distributed among whole Baltics back in the day. "Surelis" that particular one is as well made by the very old recipe back in Soviet Union times it was made in Lithuania, but after the independence it was bought by Latvian and currently is being made in Latvia. There are many of different "Sureliai" out there, but this one is probably the best :) Even the price talk for itself, it cost around 1 euro, while the cheapest ones are like ~0,20ct. The one that you tried is really "nutritious" or rather has high fat content, so it is a challenge to eat more than ~3 at once :D "Vilnius" candy is the best in red wrapping its with alcohol very good taste. As for bakery video, you should definitely get "Šakotis" but only a freshly made one, because if it stay long enough ~week or so it becomes solid and hard to eat, loses its taste. Well you should also try as many different bread as you can, but be ware of the fact that we probably have the most variety of different bread available, in any supermarket there is so many different bread available that sometimes its scary :D "Tinginys" is also a nice suggestion I saw someone already made it :) I think there is not many countries that have this sweet. "Šokoladiniai grybukai" once again home freshly made ones are the best ones, but will be hard to get :) you check for them in a bakery rather than supermarkets, because those are orientated in low price/mass production so not so great :) You should also try smoked meat and smoked fish, also I would recommend looking for these in a local market rather than supermarkets. Not sure about markets in Utena but there should be one at least and I believe there should be freshly smoked fish/meat available. Also since you are living near the recreational area of Lithuania, it would be worth to try and look for food related tourism activities.

Those ARE poppyseeds, not poppyseed shaped chocolate balls hahahah :'D If I may recommend, my favourite sūrelis of all time is Pasaka (literally: fairytale) - Google 'sūrelis pasaka su šokolado gabaliukais', and see the first image that comes up! Do also try out the Latvian and Estonian variants of this dessert if you can get your hands on them, as they are truly special too. Another thing you could try: traditional white unpasteurised cheese which you can eat straight, with honey, or bake (with or without spices and / or honey). Other must-try dairy products: Džiugas cheese, Rokiškis Grand Cheese - go for the 24m+ versions - they are SUBLIME. If you're a fried breakfast person, try Biovela bacon... and all the smoked and dried sausages from the supermarket :) But ultimately, you should find out where your local market is, and go shopping there - ideally with a local friend - who might point you at the best homemade sauerkraut, pickles, etc. as well as different types of honey (e.g. buckwheat honey, heather honey...).

*Home made gira is much better then brought. We don't really have snacks culture. All snacks are foreign stuff except of couple smoked stuff. Try lašiniai with onions as a snack. As a snack in my childhood we used to cook in a pan white milk lithuanian cheeze & put honey then on. Really good* add honey or berries in curd. If you came 30 years ago we had better cold winters like -30C. Just like we like. Now it's piece of a joke.

Winters are not that bad here and due to global warming they also just been up and down or not that cold, seasons have generally been way off. I heard that this winter suppose to be cold, but for example, two winters ago I haven't even taken my winter clothes out, I just walked with sports shoes, no hat, no scarf or gloves or anything. I think it barely got under 0. Often you might have few really bad days like -20-25, but even that is not thaaat bad.

Lithuanians have an old and great tradition of craft beers and "live" beers that are freshly made etc unfortunately it's disappearing as the culture "westernises". Each tims i visit Lithuania i get sad how its becoming harder and harder to find true local craft beers..
