This is Ladies Man 1931. William Powell 's character was Jamie Darricott, Kay Francis as Norma Page and Carole Lombard as Rachel Findley

Only a talented actor such as William Powell could generate a sympathetic reaction for such a sordid and disreputable character! His disdain for himself, how he makes his 'living', and the sense of feeling trapped in that way of life is palpable. So is his loneliness. It's nice to see him in a different sort of role; still cultured and a gentleman, but a tarnished one. I've seen several comments here stating that William Powell was not attractive. I disagree. He was not a conventionally handsome man, but he was attractive. His intelligence, wit, good manners, and charm made him even more attractive. Just my opinion.

This guy was as handsome as they come. Great smile, and even black and white can't hide the fact that he had great eyes. And all of that with acting talent that I wish had been born 40 years later. He would have been a huge star even in the sixties and seventies, possibly into the eighties. James Bond, anyone?

back then the attraction was the smoking and booze. Then they all got cancer or heart attacks. So the fun lasted for a couple decades at best.

No he didn't. But Fleming wanted Bond to be plain and not stand out, to be boring. He named Bond after a butterfly-hunter, said it was the plainest, most boring name he could find.

As much as I like William Powell, I find it hard to believe that a mother & daughter would kill over his character... it's not like he was a Tyrone Power or Errol Flynn looker.
