Hearing a man I've admired as an actor my whole life talk about my ancestor is very surreal. We were raised to be proud of John Brown in my family but to be careful about who we mentioned his name around. His daughter Annie never talked about her father when she moved out here to California. She lived in an area with a lot of backwards thinking folks who hated her dad. As a family we've had to search out every scrap of information we can on him just so we can feel like we know the guy. I'm so excited to see him brought to life by such a talented guy.

Thanks for honoring this novel by James McBride. I'm proud to have worked as a park ranger in Harpers Ferry for 12 years, and to have helped share John Brown's story with the public.

Great point made by Mr Hawk regarding 'we don't have to chose between the economy and health.' Surely achieving that balance is the hallmark of an effective administration.

I remember reading about how Frederick Douglass, who was a close confidant of Brown's, didn't think the insurrection idea would work. He was right, of course, yet without a martyr it's hard to know when the slave issue would finally take a turn.

I've been to John Brown's house in Lake Placid, NY. It's a museum now and they give a very cool tour.

Yes! My father was born in West Virginia, and made sure that we visited Harper's Ferry, as children. It's one of the most beautiful places on earth, and one of the most intense places to visit. Also, I miss John Denver real bad.
