I like that you are historically curious, not trying to be cool, and honest with your questions. You are such a breath of fresh air. I wish you every success

Nobody bothers to learn about the shoulders they stand on these days. Anyone who works in musical theater in New York today is standing on Ethel's. I am just so impressed with the Open Hydrant Theater Company making this effort. That loud brassy voice put more money in the pockets of every stage hand, set designer, lighting technician, usher, orchestra, sound director than anyone before or since. If you lucked out, got hired on a Merman show, you knew you had a job for longer than anyone else did, your kids were getting their school clothes, and your spouse was getting the electric paid. Literally every show she opened in, was a hit and it was going to be sold out as long as she stayed on.

It runs so deep, Brian. We can't interpret anything until we know the originals. Thank you for your words.

Guys - I saw Merman in Gypsy when I was 12. Still can't forget her or her performance. I still listen to that musical. She nailed that role & till today, no one has come close to matching her performance. So happy you guys took the time to see her. Follow your dreams! Make a difference. Good luck! :)

You guys are awesome and I’m glad I stumbled on to you. Edit much later: NOBODY else on KZfaq has done a reaction to Merman, one of the biggest stars of 20th century Broadway stage. I wish these people would be remembered and acknowledged more. At their height, Broadway musicals were the main feeder of songs that ruled the airwaves. Right before rock ‘n’ roll.

Context is important. This was the end of the first act number, so it was going to be great because it had to set up the second act. Mama Rose put her two daughters in vaudeville. The star of the show, June, ran off with one of the boys in the act to get married. This left her with the untalented one, Louise, to set up a new act. After the daughter wanted to quit, Mama Rose sang this song to show they were going to reinvent themselves. Gypsy is one of the most prime musicals in history. It is also one of my favorites.

Interesting pick. You should watch either the Patti LuPone Tony Awards or Betty Buckley Paper Mill Playhouse Gypsy clips of "Everything's Coming Up Roses" on KZfaq to get a better idea of how the song is really used within the show. They have a bit of dialogue that leads into the song. Each give amazing performances. Also I would be curious to see your reactions to Betty Buckley's "As If We Never Said Goodbye" (theater clip, not concert, in costume) from the musical Sunset Boulevard , Gwen Verdon's "Whatever Lola Wants" from Damn Yankees (50's musical) or Alex Newell's "Mama Will Provide" from the Once On This Island Tony Awards segment. Keep up the good work!

It is, as you say, old as shit. But it's fucking great. I don't think this woman ever needed a mic. And actually, you're right. The show Gypsy is about a very twisted stage mother (and this song is actually pretty dark in the context of the show). It's based on a true story. And, yes, though she did star in the Broadway show, this performance was a variety/talk show appearance. Kudos to you guys for checking out the original 'Mermanator'. If you're feeling it, see (and hear) Merman singing an all-time show-biz classic called 'There's No Business Like Show Business'. I think you'll like it even better. I just looked for a link. She performed this song a lot and there are links of her doing it from the 50s through at least the 80s (including on the Muppet Show). I chose this version (though it's short and doesn't include most of the verses) but it does include Barbra Streisand and Judy Garland, along with some fun banter. Since you're theater folk, I think it's a must-see. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/obZ7gpCkmNulhJs.html

Stay reacting to old theater if you want to build theater. No one is going after that base. Everyone is reacting to the already overplayed famous. Remember that video you played is back from when there was only a volume button on the amp. & no mixer.
