Rob: Hey, everybody! Rob here at etrailer.com. Today, we're going to be taking a look at the Curt Class III Custom-Fit Trailer Hitch Receiver on our 2017 Fiat 500X. Now, here's what our hitch is going to look like once we have it installed. The cross tube is going to sit right below the bumper, but it sits back pretty far and the main thing we're going to see is that receiver tube sticking out.Now, it's really nice the fact that it's a Class III because it's going to give us that two inch by two inch receiver tube opening and really give us a really wide variety of options for accessories that we can mount up. Obviously, a trailer hitch you can put a pull mount in there and you can tow a trailer. But, we can also put a bike rack in here, hit some trails with some friends, or if we just need to make some room inside out of our Fiat, we could put a cargo carrier back here and move some of that gear to the outside.But regardless of how you're going to be using your hitch, all of your accessories are going to mount to the hitch pin hole here on the side.
Now the edge 00:00:54 is going to accept a standard five-eighths pin and clip. Now, these are going to come with the hitch, but you can find them here at etrailer.com along with some locking devices and anti-rattle devices to take down that annoying rattling sound when you're driving down the road. It makes sure all of your accessories are nice and secure.If you are towing a trailer, obviously you need a spot to hook up your safety chains and we've got a loop style here welded to the bottom of the receiver tube and you can see with most normal sized hooks, there's plenty of room to get those hooks hooked on or to take them off. And even if you have those really large, oversized hooks, you can see we still have room to get those hooked on and take them off and the fact that the pin hole is just slightly off-set from the center of the safety chain loops, means that there's going to be less of a chance of any kind of interference between our safety chains and our securing device, whether it's a pin and clip or a locking device.Now, obviously, if you're looking for a hitch for your Fiat, you already have an idea of what you want to do and you need to make sure that hitch is going to be up to the task that you put it to. So as far as the weight rating goes, our hitch is going to have a 525 pound tongue weight.
That's how much maximum downward pressure at the end of the receiver tube we can have.To put that in perspective, 525 pounds is actually a pretty good amount. We'll be able to really maximize those large cargo carriers or be able to carry about four, maybe even five, bikes with this.As far as the gross trailer rate rating goes, our hitch is going to have a 3500 pound rating. That's how much our hitch can pull, but that does include the trailer and everything we have loaded on it. I always recommend that you double check your Fiat's owners manual because those are the rating for our hitch, but we don't ever want to exceed the rating for our car.I'd like to give you a few measurements and these are going to help you when you're looking at accessories for your new hitch, like a ball mount, a bike rack, or even a cargo carrier. From the center of the hitch pin hole to the outermost edge of the bumper, it's going to be right about four and a half inches.
That measurements going to help you out when you're looking at folding accessories to make sure you have enough room to put in the upright store position and not make contact with the rear bumper.From the ground to the inside top edge of the receiver tube opening, is right about 12 inches. With that height, I definitely recommend a bike rack or a cargo carrier with a raised shank. That way we get a little bit more ground clearance out of it. That measurements also going to help you when you're looking for a ball mount so you can find the appropriate rise or drop to match to your trailer.Now that we've seen what our hitch looks like and we've gone over some of the features, let's go through the installation process together. To begin our installation, we want to come to the back of our Fiat.
We're going to come right underneath the rear bumper. Now, if we come to the outside edge, we're going to find the frame rail and if we look right above the very back here, at the very back we'll have a rubber plug just behind the exhaust hanger. We're going to pull this plug out. You can use a flat blade screwdriver or trim panel tool, just about whatever you have, and we're going to pull that plug out of there.
