Many times have I felt disappointment over EU. But then I look at how has been steadily helping in cultivating public processes and rule of law in my country. And while I was not impressed by the perceived slowness of reaction towards the Ukrainian crisis, I am afraid without the EU we would have no unified reaction at all, no real sanctions, sporadic help, individual countries taking advantage of each other. On the other hand, the fact that it is not a unified country, at least yet, helps protect democracy IMO.
