Opposition leaders and western nations have denounced a so-called foreign influence bill passed by Georgia's national parliament.
Thousands of demonstrators have blocked a major traffic junction in the capital Tbilisi.
DW's Maria Katamadze spoke to former Georgian president Giorgi Margvelashvili at the protests.
Critics fear the law will be used to stamp out dissent - and will dent Georgia's hopes of joining the European Union. The legislation requires media and other groups to register as "pursuing the interests of a foreign power" if they get more than 20% of their funding from abroad.
Georgia’s President Salome Zourabichvili has vowed to veto the bill, but the government says it will use its majority to override her and ensure the measure becomes law.
The European Union have criticised the Georgian government's plans, saying the law isn't compatible with EU membership .
The US government has also cautioned against its adoption, warning that Washingon would "fundamentally reassess" ties with Tbilisi if the bill wasn't withdrawn.

@@silvasdamata Thats the thing, a few thousand thugs and confused unemployed individuals do not represent the entire country. The government is doing what it promised and that is to keep the country in one piece. You have to understand that there is obsoletely nothing to do in Georgian mountains but horde goats, make wine and run some restaurants for the Russian tourists. Which leaves over 40% of the population unemployed. The moment it joins EU... everyone will leave Georgia and their markets will be overflown with EU goods, completely killing the little profits they have from domestic production. And as soon as EU starts pushing it into NATO, it will be in war with Russia. And Georgia will lose about 25% of its GDP generated from Russian trade and tourism. And thats when 80% of the population will just relocate to central European countries.

FARA requires certain agents of foreign principals who are engaged in political activities or other activities specified under the statute to make periodic public disclosure of their relationship with the foreign principal, as well as activities, receipts and disbursements in support of those activities. Disclosure of the required information facilitates evaluation by the government and the American people of the activities of such persons in light of their function as foreign agents. The FARA Unit of the Counterintelligence and Export Control Section (CES) in the National Security Division (NSD) is responsible for the administration and enforcement of FARA.” Why resist it?

@@NuggieCharms That sounds good so then why would any country in Europe want anything to do with Russian anymore ? I mean how do they see being loyal to the Kremlin as a "good move" ?

@@CIS101 first of all let's separate people from their governments. I'm a Georgian who lives abroad, and many of my friends are Russian. I can't speak on behalf of other countries and their mindset, but I don't think any democratic or democratically leaning country approves anything that Russia does or says! I can't describe how proud I am of all and especially the young generation of Georgians who are proudly marching and fighting for their freedom!!! We have seen firsthand what the Russian occupation results into. No more!!!

@@NuggieCharms Thank you for that. That helps me to understand. Am I correct in assuming that the West should have done more after 1991 to embrace Russia, and Eastern Europe ?

Can you imagine a situation in which Georgia calls on the EU to drop some of its laws? The EU will probably perceive this as interference in internal affairs. This is true. Why does the EU interfere in Georgia's internal affairs? Apparently, the EU does not perceive Georgia as a sovereign state. This is called imperialism.

@@DarxKies Of course, we are talking specifically about the interference of the EU and the United States in Georgian affairs. That is why they are so actively opposed to a law that will strengthen Georgia’s sovereignty and significantly weaken their influence.
