It is September 11, 1697 and the Ottoman army is annihilated in the battle of Zenta by the imperial army led by Prince Eugene of Savoy, thus ending the steady rise of the Ottoman Empire over the previous centuries. 30 000 die. The super powers of this period are the Habsburg Empire and the Ottomans. The dominance of the Habsburgs is well documented, but the Ottoman Empire was a civilization that was no less developed and whose culture we know only little about.
This two part series is an expedition through the most complex times that Europe has ever experienced - and an era that still resonates today.

If prince Eugene was English many movies and great novels would have been made about him. Just found out about him in 2023 .

Finally!!! - a production about Prince Eugene! It is difficult to find material about him in English. Thank you!

I agree about Eugene but the title is misleading when only the first ten minutes are actually about the Battle of Zenta.

The beautiful Belvedere palace in Vienna was built for Eugene of Savoy in the same way that Blenheim Palace in England was built for his equally brilliant contemporary John Churchill duke of Marlborough.

Thank you so much for this! Listened to it on a 2 hr drive and kept my mind on it and not the reason I was making the drive. Have always been interested in the Hapsburgs and the Ottoman attacks into Europe.

Had Eugene and Napoleon lived during the same time and teamed up as co-commanders they might have been basically unstoppable. Napoleon had some very good Marshalls, some good ones, and some across the rest of the spectrum. His best Marshall’s tho excelled in one, two, or three areas, but always lacked significantly in one respect or another. Eugene is someone who could make plans, strategy, and objectives with Napoleon. Then they could each strikeout with confidence in the other. That kind of trust is very valuable and would add greatly to their effectiveness. Throw in the best Marshall’s using their strengths and having no need to use them in situations not suited. For example, Murát on static defense.

Overall, a few of Napoleon's Marshalls did actually well independently from the Emperor. Marshall Suchet & Bernadotte were likely the best men who did well in terms of independent command & administrative attention while Davout had a much better record in terms of military discipline that many of his colleagues & even Napoleon got slowly jealous of him. Hence, why many rank him as #1 out of the 28 Marshalls

It is wild that the Roman Empire can be said to end with the Ottomans taking Constantinople. The Ottoman Empire lasted till WWI. So in a way the Ottomans were the only thing between Europe in the 1900’s to Cincinnatus, Scipio africanus, and Hannibal who were linked to Alexander the Great thru the Ptolemy empire in Egypt and Troy via Hannibal’s ancestors.

@2msvalkyrie if you really want to see names, places, and things butchered in pronunciation, go to Kings and Generals. What was a reasonable channel has been lost to churning out as much content as fast as possible at the cost of proper research into basic aspects of their videos.

Maybe the commander didn’t tell the Sultan what his objective was, maybe also the Sultan didn’t ask, maybe he did ask and was lied to, and maybe Sultan knew exactly what the objective was. Maybe Sultan lied after to deflect blame. In the case Sultan didn’t know and it wasn’t cause he didn’t care the commander thought if he was successful he would be rewarded. Surely he knew failure would be very bad for him. It is possible the Sultan would still take his head even if successful depending on disposition, why and how Sultan didn’t know, and how much success was had and future consequences. The downsides seem many more and worse than the possible rewards. This is why I’d wager Sultan knew and his claimed ignorance was to deflect.

After the French Revolution, and the brutal death of their beloved Marie Antoinette, The Hapsburg family organized the Benevolent Monarchs Society Of Europe, an organization meant to think tank a system to get all of the monarchies of Europe to transition to democratically elected leadership and strongly encourage all of the world's monarchies to abdicate, and act as diplomatic liason between citizens and populist uprising. The organizations flag and color scheme was blue and yellow. The organization based itself Bakmut, The Ukraine after being driven out of Austria in 1831. The organization essentially became the new government of The Ukraine as a resistance to Moscow. Three times between the 1870's and 1920's the government of The Ukraine changed its flag between the Benevolent Society flag and the Moscow Republic flag. The Republic Of Moscow flag is Russias current flag. Russia was actually called Moscow until Czar Paul I

Wien was saved by the Polish Winged Husars led by Jan Sobiesky. Even the authors of an apologetical documentary on Eugene de Savoye (a man of valour in its own name) should not depart from scientific honesty in aknowledging that.

31:40 - Prince Eugene didn't see this one coming, because that was the moment... When the winged hussars arrived! A cry for help in time of need, await relief from holy league 60 days of siege, outnumbered and weak Sent a message to the sky, wounded soldiers left to die Will they hold the wall or will the city fall? Dedication Dedication They're outnumbered 15 to one And the battle's begun Then the winged hussars arrived! Coming down the mountainside! Then the winged hussars arrived! Coming down they turned the tide! As the days are passing by and as the dead are piling high No escape and no salvation Trenches to explosive halls are buried deep beneath the walls Plant the charges there and watch the city fear Desperation Desperation It's a desperate race against the mine And a race against time Then the winged hussars arrived! Coming down the mountainside! Then the winged hussars arrived! Coming down they turned the tide! Cannonballs are coming down from the sky! Janissaries are you ready to die? We will seek our vengeance eye for an eye! You'll be stopped upon the steps of our gate! On this field you're only facing our hate! But back home the sultan's sealing your fate! We remember, In September That's the night Vienna was freed We made the enemy bleed! Then the winged hussars arrived! (Storm clouds, fire and steel Death from above make their enemy kneel) Coming down the mountainside! (Shining armor and wings, Death from above, it's an army of kings) Then the winged hussars arrived! (Storm clouds, fire and steel Death from above make their enemy kneel) Coming down they turned the tide! (Shining armor and wings, Death from above, it's an army of kings)x4 We remember, In September, When the Winged Hussars arrived!
