The Liaoning is for training purposes only and will only be used for combat when absolutely needed, and by that time, it will be a launching pad for the next generation Chinese combat drones.

The problem with these carriers and jets are that most people misunderstand their purpose. They are for carrier operations training purposes. And to be honest is a brilliant idea. Why build and use a expensive carrier and jets for training only?

Apart from J-15, Liaoning and Shandong carriers also carry the Z-18F, which is a 13-ton large helicopter developed based on the French Super Frelon. It has a 1,000 km range and can carry torpedoes and anti-ship missiles as well. That helicopter needs some introduction too. And the 003 carrier is about to be completed, installed with a domestic electro-magnetic catapult. A new version of J-15 (reported by some media as J-15T) capable of being catapult-launched has already been developed and tested. So even if those accusations were true, they will soon become history.

A new aircraft being used withing a new branch of a service.... You have to enter the game somewhere and start building up the experience and proficiency. this is exactly what China has done and is now undergoing rapid evolution in both Carriers and Aircraft as Chinese Naval Aviation gets itself established. The ridicule about the J-15 has no leg to stand on because the new one essentially will be like a J-11D (which could whip the F-15J and anything in the ROCAF). The shortcoming was never in the plane but in the payload and fuel limitation associated with the Ski Jump takeoff. That won't be a problem once type 003 is commissioned and Shandong and Liaoning are retrofitted with carapults.

It seems like the West / US is somewhat underestimating the J15. This is obvious regarding the takeoff weighr, range and reliability. Losing two airframes in 10 years in a navy without previous history operating carriers actually seems pretty great. That said, the fact that it lacks an AESA radar and doesnt carry the PL15 is limiting. It is likely the latest version(s] will address these issues.

J15 is a good aircraft. The only problem is that they operate from ski jump carrier. So their full potential has not been realised.

Without the new carrier implementing a CATOBAR system then the J-15 is under utilised as it is unable to use its full payload capacity or fuel capacity in order to get off the current Soviet style carriers - it does make sense and I agree with that assessment when u look at the lack of AEWACS aircraft on current carriers (KJ-600) is being developed for the new carrier However any 4th generation fighter such as the J-15, especially knowing China’s great aviation industry, will be more that prepared for whatever role command requires and they will definitely have a life time upgrade to make sure they keep up with any adversaries so it doesn’t matter what the west thinks as each fighter will have its role and will be able to maximise its ability specified for that role

Spot On!. You should study F14 history operating on the aircraft carrier and you would be shocked with the number of crashes and fatalities. PLA J15 is nothing in comparison. Look at F35.....already 3 lost in less than 3 years in South China Sea. One from Japan, the other from UK and the recent one in USA. 3 crashes in less than 5 years....

I would say Liaoning is the very first aircraft carrier not even made in China fully. Of course enchanted field for China. It serves in many aspects. Take off and landing are new for pilots in real time. It also provides enormous information to engineers, technicians, opening the leaders' to decide what kind of long term to set. So far we have seen China is capable of fully domestic carrier as Shandong. If you understand the way of Chinese people ,they will be in driving seat in less than two decades. They do not need to have 6/7/8 of them. The level, caliber of rocket force is well known for speed and extreme accuracy, yankees carriers will be kept at bay. Time is on their side. Yankees subs will be hitting seamounts again and again regardless of sea wolf or sea dog.

The new J-15 will be a great aircraft with the AESA radar and latest AAMs.

Unlike other flankers (J11 series, J16 series) use WS-10. J-15 still uses the AL31F as the main engine. AL31F has become the only engine that China currently still buying from Russia. Not quite sure if J-15T is still going to use the AL31F, since rumor says that it is going to use WS-10. WS-10 was very bad in the early years of development (maybe around 2012), to prove the usage of WS-10, there was a time when the Chinese flankers like J11B used two different engines on one jet, one was AL31F, and another was WS-10. After WS-10 finally achieved its original goal of design, the buying of AL31F quickly decreased to only J15. And then there were rumors saying AL31F is a kind of balanced trade exchange between China and Russia, it is not because the PLA Navy has no choice (Their J11BGH use WS-10), but because the Lyulka design bureau needs to have customer's order to maintain their company's running, especially after 2014. But now Russia is at War, and the production has all shifted for that, and now it is very hard for the Lyulka to provide the AL31F to China stable since their production is all now serve to the War. so it is very possible that the J15T is going to use WS-10. These early type J15 will continue to use AL31F until the Navy is out of storage, and then shift to WS-10 or some other Chinese engine that time. I don't think PLA will just decommission these J-15 quickly, maybe these J-15 will still serve on Liaoning or Shandong for a long time, or maybe transfer to the Navy school. PLA usually don't just waste any jets as long as there is the possibility to upgrade them.

The problem is not the J-15. I am sure J-15 is pretty capable. The issue is the carrier. So far China is still using STOBAR carrier. In order for Chinese navy to utilize full potentials of J-15 they need CATOBAR carrier.

How is this guy an expert? At the c. 6min. mark, he claims that the ski jump requires that aircraft "expend a considerable amount of internal fuel." That explanation calls all of his claims into question.

Well US F-35 had records of crash. But J-15 doesn't have record of crash. This already tell the basic engine capability and avionics.

I don’t understand why China built the 002 Shangdong. It’s basically a larger version of 001 Liaoning with the same limitations of a ski ramp. Should have built 002 as a modern catapult carrier.

I'm sure it's a very competent fourth gen fighter. Do I think it stands a chance against an F-22 or F-35? Absolutely not. The J-20 might at least in certain conditions although it's not a true stealth jet.

@EurasiaNaval The perceived weakness of the J-15 has nothing to do with its aerodynamic or kinetic strengths. It has to do with the ski jump. The ski jump results in high centripetal forces acting on the wings of the J-15 as it accelates upward. The only way to prevent damaging the wings being damaged is to limit the stores to light weight missiles.

How can aircraft launch off of a ski jump compared to a catapult? I would think that the ski jump would slow the aircraft rather than make it speed up. What kind of fuzzy physics is going on there? Also, doesn't the ski jump limit what kind of aircraft can fly off of that carrier? ....whereas a catapult can be adjusted for lighter or heavier aircraft. Yes?

The problem of Liaoning is not its plane, but it's steam engines. Steam engines needs time to heat up. Basically, Liaoning needs about 30 minutes to heat up and prepare it self and gain speed to be combat ready. While other carriers like nuclear or gas turbines only need half of the time. Liaoning is really vulnerable when in docked. China needs an replacement engine. PL-8 is also not as good as PL-10.

J-15 is huge and heavy fighter jets. It's not suitable for fighter but as bomber. Better built smaller and medium sizes fighter jets with powerful engines like J-17, J-10 & J-35.
