Yeah, the abuse GS gets is ridiculous. The so-called golden generation couldn't even qualify for Euro08, so the excuse that the talent in the current England squad means we should walk it doesn't carry any weight for me. GS has stamped out the club rivalry, united and motivated the squad and staff and their families, and got them achieving to their potential for the first time in decades.

Not sure it's fair to criticize pundits for doing their job, especially when most people are agreeing with them. What I will say is that Southgate hasn't received the deserved credit from some England fans for what he's actually achieved. Whether he stays or goes he's given me the most enjoyable time as an England fan in 40yrs - however we've played or if we win it or not - and for that I'll always be grateful to the man.

Portugal in Euro 2016 were diabolical all tournament and went on to win it, France in Russia 2018 were pretty poor throughout but won it, there's something about an under performing grinding it out and getting over the line, that's us this tournament, apart from the first half against the Dutch we've been dreadful, I'm 44 and have seen disappointing tournament after disappointing tournament, for some reason I actually think we are going to grind this one out, I'm probably going mad but I actually think we are going to win!

Well said. Finally a fan that actually speaks sense. I'm part of the generation whose first memories of England in an international tournamentbwas Euro 96. Up to 2018, that was as good as it got. I lived through the 'golden' generation, the hype surrounding Rooney, the oxygen tents and the WAGs. 2018 up to now has beem the only time I felt England were a proper team who had realistic chances of going far and actually winning tournaments. 2 finals, 1 swmi and 1 quarter speaks volumes. Yes, no trophy but when compared to other teams during this period and what England achieved from 1996 to 2018, this England team can be seen as a success in respects to how far England have come. Win or lose England have done excellently and if Southgate does leave, I would bet good money England will not reach the same heights.

Coming back 3 times from behind! Subs coming off and acting professional, subs coming on and scoring, assisting and taking successful penalties! I would also argue that Pickford, Maguire and Phillips are 3 players that have played some of the best games of their career in an England shirt. I think Saka, Rice, Henderson, Shaw, Trippier and probably loads more but I'm done counting, have played as well for England in tournaments as they have done for their clubs. Please, someone- can you tell me any players, ever, from any tournament, any position, anyone, who has ever looked even a fraction of the player they were at club level, when playing in a cup for England before Southgate? It has literally never happened, 23-man teams, every 2 years for my entire life, and not 1 player has ever matched their club level in an England shirt until Southgate. And now it's half the team. Even players like Konsai who come in to cover in a quarter final, no problem. People should be a bit more humble I think. Southgate isn't a brilliant tactician, therefore he's not a brilliant manager.... but he's done things as a manager that Fabio Capello, Bobby Robson, Terry Venables and many more didn't come close to. The obvious answer to that paradox is that maybe there's more to being a manager than the tactics side, and maybe, just maybe, Southgate is very good at that stuff.
