Euro NCAP Crash & Safety Tests of Kia EV6 2022

Euro NCAP performs a series of crash and safety tests on car models:
- a frontal impact test, 50% of the width of the car is striking an oncoming deformable barrier, also travelling at 50 km/h
- a frontal impact test, the car impacts a rigid full width barrier
- a side impact test, a mobile deformable barrier impacts the driver's door and the robustness of the centre airbag is evaluated
- a pole test, the tested car is propelled sideways into a rigid pole.
A series of pedestrian tests are conducted with different impactors, adult and child head form, lower and upper leg form and whiplash tests are performed on a sled as well as AEB pedestrian and cyclist tests.
Active safety is tested based on the car’s equipment: autonomous emergency braking car-to-car scenarios, occupant status monitoring (including seatbelt reminders), lane support and speed assistance technologies.

@@shadow479 actually, EVs have amazing handling skills because of the incredibly low centre of gravity. they swing around corners like they’re on rails.

@@mach1nefan It's not like this how it works. They are still too heavy, and the heavyweight behind the front axle increases the tendency to understeer. A Citroën C3 is faster than a Porsche Taycan in the moose test.

Why does EURONCAP refuse to test small overlap? Meaning trying to avoid a crash, but still get hit on the corner, exactly where cars have no protection, but is becoming more and more of how cars actually crash, other than getting under the back of a parked truck. As a journalist reporting local accidents, I'm shocked how avoidable those certain deaths are if only they accepted it and started to find a solution

Why is the front crash done at 50 km??? Most accidents happen at much higher speeds.

If the vehicle fails at a lower speed, it will also fail at a higher speed.

@@localguy123 It's all about money, each chassis can only be used for one test. More tests means longer development and higher price for customers. However, other organisations use a different methodology. For example, the IIHS performs some tests at 40 mph (~64 km/h) or ADAC uses a speed of 72 km/h in some cases.

@@localguy123 that's not the reason they do those tests at 50K/h, they used to do them at 64K, the 50k full width test was made because car structures, belts, and airbags had become VERY rigid to pass crash tests making them to strong for low speed impacts.

In the case of a pedestrian impact, the bumper and hood are designed to have some give so as to soften the impact and reduce risk of broken leg or severe head injury.

@@meriofrog model 3 and model s had moderat risk of injury to lower leg in small overlap. Acceptable score. Not good score and no risk of injury to lower leg. 2015 Subaru Wrx was stronger than both Tesla's in small overlap. Door sill collapsed inward and backwards on tesla.

@@meriofrog check 2014 model s ncap scores now. It's rating has ben downgraded. It has 82% score for adult occupant and 77% for child occupant. My small 2016 subaru has 92% for adult occupant and 83% for child occupant.

@@meriofrog iihs 2016 model s: In the second test, the left front wheel was shattered during the crash, but the brake rotor and caliper remained intact and were forced rearward and inward, splitting the welded seam of the door hinge pillar, and contributing to a moderate risk of injury to the left lower leg.

그래도 현기차가 전보단 충돌안전성에 있어 도 안전해진 것은 사실이긴 하네요. 앞으로 결함 등에 대처를 수익 보장 이런거 상관 없이 모든 시장에서 공평하게 대해줬으면 좋겠습니다. (다행히 정의선 체재로 바뀐 이후 뭔가 살짝 달라진거 같더라구요. 개인적으로 블루핸즈 직원들도 계약만 하지 말고 따로 교육도 했으면 하는 마음입니다.)

@@filipborin555 It seems like Hyundai motor group’s cars become safer than before in Crash Test. For the future I hope Hyundai treat the customers equally in all market caring about quality issue not caring about company’s profit. Thankfully we may see the changes after Group CEO has changed. Personally we hope all of service center members get train from Hyundai not only the Hyundai repair centers but also blue hands. (Blue hands mean car center in Korea but also have hyundai license.) But attitude treating the customers personally not good.

Electric cars are less likely to burn on impact BUT if they do it is a task to put them out. To quote: "New research (01.2022) analysing car fires in the United States has found that electric cars are dramatically less likely to catch fire than other vehicles, while hybrid vehicles are surprisingly much more likely, even compared to ICE vehicles."

They are naturally safer due to the seats and headrest providing protection and cushion. The side and front are where we are exposed

@@amperformance7998 whiplash test is entirely different from structural test, i remember couple years ago IIHS started doing 'passenger side crash test', and the manufacturer started to reinforce the passenger side structure! because those big brand will cut cost wherever they can if institutes such as IIHS + EURO NCAP ignores them. I hate to see some kid sitting in the rear seat and gets crushed, just because those big brands thinks they can cut cost and more money into their pocket

@@droomagon I don't disagree with you that more testing is valuable. But the primary threat of rear-end collisions is not in structural integrity (as evaluated in real-world crashes), but in the sudden acceleration and its impact on the back and neck. That is what the whiplash test evaluates. Bear in mind that crash safety organisations have budgets. More testing, especially structural testing is expensive, and these organisations (assuming they are well-run) focus their testing on the sort of crashes that pose the greatest risk. The passenger side testing you mention came out of observations in real world crashes. If injuries from rear-end crashes were to become disproportionate, then I'm sure they would begin testing. In the meantime, though, advocating for more funding and research would be no bad thing.

was ev6's battery empty during this test? i see a lot ofelectric vehicles catching on fire when there is big accident because of battery explosion. one of big concern about buying EV

NO mass of the battery is important to the test. "battery explosion" basically never occurs with modern NMC or LiFePO4 with fire retardant. Sure there is Flames for hours but it does not Explode.

Then you don't know what you're looking at. It did an excellent job and mitigated injury very well. It even bounced back! Those doors are extremely strong and stayed straight, not caving inward.

The Lack of an engine will do that to a car. However, I think because of the lack of engine, it reduces driver/passenger injury chance from whiplashes, concussions, whatever because the impact is softened. But then again there is more crumpling happening, pros and cons
