This Soviet team is that it should have contested the gold against the United States in Los Angeles 84. Politics deprived us of the game.

Bobby Knight was very upset that he did not get to play the USSR. That was the last great USA college team.Charles Barkely was cut from that team.

Too sad that Sabonis had so many injuries so early in his career. And yes, those LA olympics in 1984, so sad that we had cold war back then and he did not participate. Who knows what Sabonis could do if he was healthy. Perhaps the greatest center of all time!

Russia was great, but Italy had experience and won the gold medal just two years before this game. Of course we knew there was a missing link between the gloriuos but aging old guard (Marzorati, Sacchetti, Villalta..) and the new guys who had talent but lacked experience (Magnifico, Premier, Gilardi) The game was tough before the start, Russia was the main european basketball powerhouse (Yugo was still on the rise),but we were the defending champions, dammit =). What made the whole thing unplayable very early for Italy was the embarassing superority of one man. Sabas, you are my hero.

The Soviets was the best team during the eighties,till 1989,I think they didn’t lose to Yugoslavia for 9 years,how could they lost to Spain in 1983 semis?Here Italy seems to be a low category team compered to Soviets,to bad politic involved into sport,the possible 1984 Olympic final between Soviets and Jordan’s USA would of been a brilliant match.
