As a Greek, I'm filled with pride our Greek civilization is now subsequently, a European civilization. I really hope next time the Olympic Games will take place in Germany. All Europeans we're ONE, simply with our slightly distinct traditions. We're glad we share with you the greatest civilization humanity produced. We're also glad our fellow Europeans have had the capacity and mind to adopt every single aspect. The Romans who copied the Greeks, helped spread it in the rest of Europe. We Greeks tried to spread it East, in parallel with our main threat which coming from the East, but unfortunately, Islam made our tries go in vain. The Orientals weren't neither capable nor have had the capacity to adopt a single aspect, unfortunately.

It was lit during the dress rehearsal. They keep it lit just in case the weather doesn’t allow to ignite the torch with sun during the actual ceremony

In such ceremonies, non-Greeks aren't allowed to participate. The Olympic flame, the Presidential Guard etc. We really do not want to turn them multi-cultural. Our history is recorded perfectly clearly while it's written down by Greek blood, only, unlike ink. I hope people can understand our sensitive feeling on the subject. People also can feel free to call us immature, but still it's going to be a "No". Historically, except extremely few cases and in minuscule numbers, none fought during our countless struggles on our side. We were always doing it on our own. All I'm saying, it'd be slightly hubris watching non-Greeks representing us in some of our most official ceremonies. Thank you for your consideration and understanding. P.S. @francesca7142. "Greeks often are"? It's news to me we're people of color. What do you mean? Greeks always have been, Greeks always will be. The fact we get 270 days a year sunshine while many of us are able to produce melanin, in no way makes us "non-white". For those Greeks who can produce melanin, you'd really have to checkout our booty which doesn't receive sunshine, in order to see our real color (a shade of white as every other fellow European).

I'm sorry, but it's going to be a resounding "No". French are our friends. We still try to help by showing to them how it would be better to be done, relative ceremonies etc. In such organizations only Greeks are allowed to participate. Olympic ceremony, our Presidential Guard and the Greek Army. Historically, except few exceptions and in miniscule numbers, none fought on our side. The Greek history is greatly recorded, written down by Greek blood, only, unlike ink. Therefore, non-Greeks have no place in such ceremonies. Please, try to understand our sensitive feeling of ours on this particular matter, before you start throwing around the usual accusation, we're "racist" etc. Besides, I'm fairly sure in an actual barometer, poll, asking the actual European citizens of each country, we'd all agree on this matter, keeping Europe as it was destined to be. As we did before in relation to the French Enlightenment. One of the main key reasons for the Enlightenment, it was us, again, when in our tries at the Councils of Florence, the Greek Emperor along with his scholars attending the meetings, both sides trying to bridge the chasm the unfortunate Schism created. We didn't manage to find a solution, but at the last ones in 1450 we still did manage to convince the Medici to build a Neo-Platonic Academy. Again, we gave them highly sought after scripts of ours, from laws to theatrical plays and everything in-between. This act alone re-introduced Greek ideals amidst some of the "dark ages" of Europe. It acted as a major catalyst for the Italian Renaissance and subsequently, French Enlightenment. It's the reason we Greeks in our great history we learn about the Enlightenment. The French kept the lights on when we Greeks found ourselves under the darkness of Islam, the obscurantism which kept us stagnant for over 370 years. By keeping the light on, it was the continuation of the Ancient Greeks ideals, until we managed to liberate Greece with England and France offering a loan to help liberate Greece. In conclusion, I implore you, let's keep Europe unified with that spirt & ideals by all Europeans who eventually contributed in the Pan-European unification, the culmination of a great continuation and to remain as-is, looking forward. At the very least, try to keep the religious fanatics in check. Greece in this part of Europe had been, it currently is and will always be the gatekeepers of the European vision, literally, by guarding our borders and metaphorically. French, British and German friends of ours, please, don't let Europe regress into darkness. Every little act, like this one, no matter how symbolic, helps.
