My wife and I will be traveling to Italy next month for 10 days. It will be my first time crossing the Atlantic. We are so much looking forward to our trip. I have never heard of Rick Steves until about a month ago. I can honestly say that after watching all these travel talks from the Rick Steves archives on KZfaq has been extraordinarily helpful to me. Just want to say Thank You to all that work for Rick Steves and gives people like me the ins and outs of what to do and what not to do while on our trip experiencing the Italian culture.

And I was thinking.... Memphis, Tennessee? Dallas, Texas? Denver, Colorado? The U.S. just doesn't have the 1000s of years of cultural history to compete with Europe or beyond. Americans just can't put their minds around living in a town or city for generation after generation as they do for centuries and centuries as European and beyond people have by nature.

I am European and on my trips I have always travelled the way you recommend it: I went to bathes in Budapest, to the opera in Vienna, to church in the Milano duomo, to a local hamman in Istanbul, I use to spend my holidays on the mediterraen and always do my evening promenade, so the advice are really good. Dive in our beautiful continent and you will have a great time.

In1998able You are wrong. I am European and I said "I am European"... here we have the proof that your statement is wrong... I was born in Germany, I lived 20 years in France and now live in Germany again.. I speak German, French, English and Italian... I am European! and I like it.!

Ludwig, Im scandinavian, and am planning to do a European trip next summer. I planned on going from Northern Germany to Austria by train, and from there to Hungary and down to Greece (mainland and some Island hopping), and then from there travel to the eastern coast of Spain (Catalonia). Would you reccomend me seeing some other places as well? I'll be traveling for about two months.

well, this sounds like a great trip. I would add Prague in any case. It is easy to reach when you come down from Berlin to South Germany before going to Austria. And perhaps the South of France.... la provence for example.. I also love Montpellier which is 300 km north of Barcelona (but only in summer)... my personal city top list in Europe: Prague, Paris, Vienna, Barcelona, Rome ..and of course Berlin. so probably you should add France and Italy

Increasingly in some European locations, no advanced bookings or special passes will allow visitors to beat the long SECURITY lines. The only way around this would be to go 1 hour before opening (with your pre-bought ticket) and be among the first in line or go in rainy weather or go in the low months (January, February, November).

A prolific Speaker, I'd "buy a bridge from Cameron" and ask Congress to name it after me!! This well-informed, witty gentleman has a legendary grip on all his life-long, worldly experiences and I'm definitely posting this video on all Wednesdays and Saturdays---The Lottery Drawings days. Sure hope one of those major jackpots hit me soon: That's RIGHT, I'm calling Mr. Hewitt immediately!! Thank You, Rick Steves and Cameron Hewitt.

I've been watch Rick Steves on PBS for many years and have ALWAYS enjoyed it! This is even better! Thanks so much for taking the time to make these videos. My wife and I are dreaming of taking a trip and would love to know which is the ultimate favorite route to take to the most beautiful places. She wants to take a month. I owe her that much as we have never taken a vacation in the 17 years we have been married. I'm a workaholic and she has put up with it for far to long! Any suggestions would be highly appreciated! I love her and she deserves a romantic vacation filled with beauty! Thanks in advance!

Love everything Rick is about, and Cameron is simply stellar. Here’s my question: where’s Latvia? Unless I missed it, haven’t seen a YT video on Riga - an amazing city I visited last year. Never too late, right?

I had a wonderful time traveling Scotland. I stayed By My Self in hostels - backpacker hostels that were wonderful. The hostels in Edinburgh, Inverness, and even Stornoway were better quality than most any place a person would imagine. Extremely cheap, always on the main lines of access, and most of all like an old styled pub without the customers at the bar. Super clean rooms, all with WiFi and Internet, fireplaces, kitchens galore !! Just clean your uses, keep the roar to a whisper at night/day - and meet people from all over the World. I cooked bacon and eggs for some girls from Korea while in Inverness. That evening - they cooked ME bacon and eggs.

Beware of the taxis in Amsterdam. The first time I was there, we did not think about taking a bus or train to the center, and we took a taxi. It was no joke, 70 EU from Schipol to the Grand Amrath which is right next to the station. Beware, they will scam you. I will always take the bus from now on, it's maybe 40 minutes to the center and usually less than 5 EU, just takes longer, but I will take a little more time to save hard earned cash.

I apologize for their pathetic behavior. That attitude is exactly why they sometimes get dirty looks from locals when THEY take a vacation in Europe and expect the train seat to fit their oversiized rears. In Europe, if the person could speak any English, I always tried to be polite. I can speak a little bit of German and understand some passing Italian. I tried to talk to the Swiss and Italians in their language but they were friendly and would reply in English when they heard my American accent. It's sad that so many people in the US are so lazy about manners. And they wonder why so many people have a low opinion of them...

I think between 5/10% is typical in the UK - and only when you are happy with the experience. That's my experience of living here.
