The Icelandic entry to the 1991 Eurovision Song Contest in Rome, Italy.
Stefán & Eyfi - Nína
Sort of an Icelandic "Oh My Darling Clementine", this is one of our most loved entries. We were very disappointed that this was taken so lukewarmly by the juries (we only got points from 4 countries in total, but most of these were generous votes), especially after the success of "Eitt lag enn". Still, similar to Greece's "Anixi", it's a song that may not have done well in the contest but is nonetheless a truly loved classic in the homeland to this day, to composer Eyjólfur Kristjánsson's surprise (the guy in the turquoise jacket). Everybody in Iceland knows this song, and it can still occasionally be heard on our radio in its original recording. All of which goes to prove that you just can't keep a good song down, and I admit that I like it very much.
Trivia:
Stefán Hilmarsson (the guy in the purple jacket) is still very much active on our music scene, especially fronting his band Sálin hans Jóns míns, which is still very popular in Iceland.
Eyþór Arnalds, the celloist, is best known for his part of the musical group Todmobile, which only a couple years ago released their latest album, which I think is superb. He spends much of his time in politics at this point.

This is and will always be the most popular Icelandic Eurovision song in Iceland, it even won the most popular Icelandic Eurovision song poll a few years ago :) I think every Icelander knows the lyrics and can sing this song! Stefán and Eyfi are still singing it and they're even having a concert on April 30th to celebrate Nína's 20th anniversary :D

It's hard to think it's thirty years since I saw this for the first time. I awarded 12 points to Iceland for giving us such a brilliant song. It is still a firm favourite of mine, even today (May 8th, 2021). Well done to everyone involved in the production of this song.

I loved every second of it, and the language helps a lot in the task of conveying the sentiment of the whole song. Man, Icelandic is so powrful when it needs to sound romantic, emotional, poetic and powerfully wordy. Lots of love, support and apppreciation from Mexico

I'm from Sweden and I must really say that Icelandic is a fascianting language in many ways. Partly since it has been keeping some ancient characters (such as þ & ð) and has barely been borrowing any words from other Indo-European languages but rather inventing their own words instead. Icelandic can be tricly to understand in speech but it definitely gets easier with some practice. When reading it, you do usually understand a fair amount.

As a Swede, I can verify that we don't understand much Icelandic unless we study the language. But we can understand Norwegian and (written) Danish pretty well. But as a linguistics nerd, I love studying Icelandic and Faroese, because these languages have hardly changed at all since the Middle ages, while Swedes, Norwegians and Danes all have changed their languages to a considerable degree over the centuries, most notably dropping the "th" sounds and simplifying the grammar.

A complete lie. While Iceland was indeed colonized by Norwegians, Iceland was never a penal colony for Norway, like Australia was for the UK. The vikings were rebels who fled the authorities of Norway and settled on this uninhabited island they found. Nothing was keeping them there. If there were, how do you explain the famous viking raids, where they brought people from the British isles back to Iceland with them?
@Furienna

And the Icelanders were also the first Europeans to colonize what today is Greenland and Canada.

@johny7even These languages are closely related, but Icelandic is still very different from Danish/Norwegian/Swedish, so we don't generally understand them. We do learn Danish in schools, but the manner of organising the teaching is sub-par, as we mainly learn reading and writing Danish and not enough speaking it - a GRAVE thing not to focus enough on. Now living in Denmark, I find that Danes, Norwegians and Swedes can mostly understand each other, but they don't understand Icelandic at all.

It's just a bit belted out for a tender love song. I'm sure he's great with the right song, but I think this would be benefited from being a little more understated. There's lot of interesting trivia on the And The Conductor Is...website about the rehearsals and the woes that the conductor had with the orchestra all week (as did just about everyone apart from Israel).
