Some patients can suffer from severe psychological distress. For example, due to a psychiatric condition. In the Netherlands and in Belgium, they can request euthanasia from a doctor, also known as 'assisted suicide.' Both countries were the first in the world to legalize euthanasia under strict conditions in 2002.
The practice is only carried out if the patient meets a list of stringent conditions. For instance, the patient must be mentally competent and must be suffering from an incurable condition caused by a physical or psychiatric illness or by an accident. The suffering must also be unbearable. In both countries, you need to prepare a written request to apply for euthanasia, and it must be medically examined and approved.
Our euthanasia laws have always evoked strong reactions. Should euthanasia for psychological suffering be regulated more strictly? Should it be possible for people with dementia? Are the rules for minors too lenient? What do you think?
