The really depressing thing to think about is he's spent pretty much his entire life trying to live up to someone he never got to know. They don't intend to do it but even his family has, at least once in Steven's life, compared him to Rose. It's really evident in "Three Gems and a Baby" where they all literally thought Steven was still Rose. Garnet's been the best about distinguishing him from Rose, thankfully. Amethyst projected a lot of her relationship with Rose onto Steven until they actually got closer (something she does actually realize Steven struggled with in "Steven vs. Amethyst"). Pearl has directly voiced her questions on if Rose could actually see through his eyes and has unintentionally referred to him as Rose (for the former, "Rose's Scabbard" and for the latter, "Sworn to the Sword"). Greg's also been pretty good about not doing it. Then of course you have literally every other person who ever met her comparing him to his mom. Jasper flat-out refused to believe he was anything but Rose. Bismuth trusted him at first but once she lost that trust she started calling him his mother. White, Blue, and Yellow literally thought he was just Pink playing a game until he actually showed them different. Eyeball literally tried to murder him despite the possibility of being stranded in space and getting put in danger because of that belief. The Crystal Gems in season 1 are especially bad with the comparison, at least up until "The Test". Prior to that episode, they kept trying to make sense of his abilities by comparing it to Rose and thought he could do all the same things (and even kept saying "if only Rose were here" around him which, ouch, doesn't really do well for a confidence boost). After "The Test" they had the realization he really is different and got muuuuch better about the comparisons thing. It is actually pretty sad to realize though that he only TRULY started to break away from that at the end of Change Your Mind. It was pretty bad for most of season 1, then lessened until season 3, then grew to a fever pitch in season 4 (especially with Mindful Education, the Out of this World bomb, and the Five Nights for Everyone bomb), and came to a thundering head in season 5. It's sad to realize that all the comparisons to his mom, and the discoveries of what she did, made Steven terrified of her. She was his darkest fear in Mindful Education, and he had to confront his dark thoughts in Storm in the Room to even try and make sense of them. Hell, even he became so convinced he wasn't his own person by the time Change Your Mind rolled around that White was able to rip his Gem out. Only the fact they actually got to SEE that his Gem was in fact his own finally let everyone know he's his own person genuinely, and that took 14 years to get to that point. Just... oof. I'm genuinely surprised he isn't more emotionally traumatized and broken.
