Even if they stop selling these mobile WMDs, wherever they are STASHED/STORED, they will eventually COMBUST - just try to image the CHAOS when that happens & in all the places that will happen.... For that not to happen the EVs would need to be DISMANTLED (by robots since no human would want that task).

False. The fire danger is almost non existent. Even in an accident, an EV is 2x less likely to catch fire than an ICE. It takes hours for an EV to expend the energy, and seconds for an ICE. Also, ICE carry 33% more energy than EVs. Gasoline is listed as a dangerous combustible for a reason. Hybrids are far worse than either one.

That is my issue, also. I could easily justify using an EV due to my situation ( I drive about 60-70 miles a month, max) , BUT I don't want my house to be burned to the ground by a Li-Ion battery thermal runaway. And due to the age of the house (62 years) and the electrical grid in the area, the only charging I could do would be the very slowest. This house only has 100 amp service. I can't run 3 electric heaters at the same time, LOL.....

I had not used it for months and assumed it had very little charge. It developed a swelling and split open. I foolishly picked it up to try and clip the case back together and it literally exploded into flames and clouds of gas in my hand. Fortunately I immediately dropped it so I did not get burned but it burned a hole in the carpet and wood floor beneath. I have worked with technology all my life. Computer builder, programmer, electronics engineer. I do not carry a smart phone around with me everywhere, don't want to. I rarely use a calculator, because I have one in my skull. I have always viewed technology as a tool to assist, not replace. Yes even these batteries are great technology. That of course doesn't mean that they don't have serious issues as we know. The problem isn't really the batteries or AI for example. It is greed and self interest. This technology is being controlled by morons. The companies, CEO's, governments etc, full of people without even a basic level of intelligence and knowledge of what they are doing.

@@davidbeppler3032- which sort of danger are you thinking about? Fuels burn, that’s the point of them. They have been in widespread use for like a whole century and the fire risk is accepted and is controllable. The risk of Lithium batteries isn’t zero. Lithium battery fires might be less numerous than fuel fires - but they are almost impossible to extinguish. That is a problem that isn’t going away with more numerous EVs. Okay. You’ll say as ‘technology improves’ lithium battery fires will become less numerous. However - that isn’t an insignificant issue as the fires are very disruptive when they occur. In addition - all the recycling of these batteries is also a fire risk; more than one battery recycling plant has been on fire recently. That is a problem. Any thoughts?

the big problem with most EV is in the multitude of the cells not being balance charged, they are being charged in series by a single control board that is only looking at the end voltage of the cells as a whole. the system needs to be able to access and charge each cell, as well as perform internal resistance testing, along with having controlled access to the discharge of the whole bank while charging. in drone racing we have to manually charge our multi-cell LiPo batteries, and our chargers are made with individual cell access, resistance readouts, and voltage cutoffs. in my personal opinion the charging systems need to be regulated on the E-vehicle producers side of things first, and improving customer safety awareness immediately after that because most people think batteries are just magic, they have no idea what safe voltage, internal resistance, or a lithium dendrite even are.

The problem with the batteries is in the manufacturing. I have done microscopic examination of lithium ion battery cells both new and old and ruptured. Even brand new cells have significant chemical erosion at all points of stress within the casing. It is my opinion that in order to save money and boost profits the metal used is nickel plated before the canister is formed. During manufacture the metal is stretched and compressed from a disc to a canister. The effect on the nickel plating is devastating with a catastrophic failure of the nickel seal leaving the metal underneath open to chemical erosion. Millions and millions of these battery cells are out there and every single one is a ticking bomb. I can't have been the only one to have cut open and observed the reason for cell failure. I believe that if the canisters were plated post forming then we wouldn't be seeing anywhere near as many issues but then cells would cost twice as much.

You're toast if it ever goes up and your path is blocked to the exit. When I had a camper truck, I stored the batteries outside (lead acid deep cycle *not lithium*) and there was a good 10 + mm thick solid steel between the inside and outside (floor). Of course that thickness of steel for a caravan would make it too heavy (maybe 1 tonne of steel along), but it provided some sort of protection from the outside problems if an explosion ever did occur. I was only running 24 volts (a few 12v in series and parallel) and you'd more likely boil the acid out of them before you blew them up.

Apparently there were new regulations brought into place late last year with regards to solar and battery installations in caravans and recreational vehicles. Gist of which is lithium batteries are no longer allowed to be installed in living spaces and must be fitted into some form of metal container vented to the outside. It's going to throw the industry into a bit of a mess with redesigning layouts as in a lot of cases previously they placed components to spread weight distribution and shorten cable runs etc. One of my daughters bought a new Jayco caravan last year and it has the battery and hot water system under the bed which I don't think is a particularly clever idea. Lithium ion batteries _are_ excellent for small, portable devices, yes. If they spontaneously combust, they can be easily dropped to the ground and allowed to burn. But their viability _at that size_ does not scale up into vehicles. The increase in volts, amps, and heat during charge and discharge turns them into time bombs. If I drop my phone during casual use, it is extraordinarily unlikely to rupture the battery. With the amount of mass involved in a vehicle, with all the various mounts, brackets, and attempts to distribute loads, any accident can cause a tremendous amount of shifting and shearing in the frame, battery casing, and other components, turning EVs into the Ford Pinto of this generation.

I note that dual fuel vehicles are a rare animal these days . I suspect EV's will follow a similar path given existing issues plus a road tax in some form is yet to be implemented , further eroding any perceived or anticipated per km cost benefit . The caveat there is what might happen in the battery technology field , e.g sodium ion , Graphene etc. , I'm happy to advocate for EV's when the battery tech. improves .
