In this video I talk about how the crossover is implemented in EV subwoofer and why I say they are half implemented. I also talk about why I don't think Electro-Voice subwoofer are a good option for augmenting bass on your Evolve column array system or other column array.

You can send the signal from the mixer to the top speaker and then to the sub

THANK YOU so much for this amazing explanation! It's probably the best which I have ever seen. Just slow and clear, perfect. It was so helpful to choose the right subwoofer. I came from cheap subs with switchable outputs (DSP/thru). The idea to make it hardwired is not bad, but now I need new tops as well 😀

Thanks for the correct answer! Geeze, finding someone who knew the simple straight answer "pass through DSP or parallel pre-DSP" was virtually impossible, and the EV manual is ridiculously dumbed down and uninformative. I'm about to pair an ELX to a pair of JBL VRX932. Guess I'll bust out the external crossover. 😕 By the way, using an external crossover in a subwoofer arrangement application won't in and of itself cause classic comb filtering. Classic comb filtering occurs in higher frequencies, where one can see the "teeth" of the "comb" on the display of the device measuring the time energy domain of the room in question. The term "comb filtering" was created by the users of the Techron TEF-10. It happened when they saw their first time-domain representation of 20-20khz time energy frequency plots in an acoustically misaligned space. The sharp bumps and valleys of time energy incoherence that appeared in the higher octaves looked like the teeth of a hair comb. Hence the name, "comb filtering". FWIW, I've been bi-amping live sound since 1977. I've actually used a Techron TEF-10 and seen for real comb filtering right on the display of the device that first gave this acoustical phenomenon it's slang name. 🙂 You young guys have it great. You can do TEF like measurements on your cell phones, while you're texting an order for coffee at the same time. Anyway, thanks for the clear answer on the crossover! You saved me several hours today.

I like the way how EV did realize the „crossover“. BTW as far as I know EV talks about HPF or LPF and not crossover - and this is exactly what they have in their DSP‘s. What I like about this: I am using the ETX series and setup my FOH mixer to send Main L/R + Sub. With the Low- and Highcut set in the speakers I do not need to care about filtering the signal at the outputs. I just can send the full range signal to L/R + Subs and the PA does the rest.

I have tried it both ways with the sub feed a crossed over signal to the Evox J8 and sometimes without. It's really a personal choice that I make by ear and educated guess. In a bass boomy room, I will cross it over and just let the sub handle the lows. Keep in mind that the floor and walls can add up to 9db in some rooms to the bass! At an outdoor gig, I don't crossover and let all of the speakers help out with bass. That's because I lose the bass gain that I would get from a room. However, ideally I would have extra subs for an outdoor event if possible.

As @The Angry Sound Tech says below "the EV Elx 200 18sp is a good sub to use with the evolve 50’s because you can run everything through the EV App and control the crossover features for all speakers!" Also the only subs that work with the EV App are the ELX 200 series.

I have 2 ELX200 15P's and 1 ELX200 18SP. I set the Sub and Tops accordingly, but wondered what was being sent to my non name brand second pair of 15 inch tops. With what you have explained so well, is that I am passing through full range from 18SP to the 2 15P's and then through them, full range to the no name 15's. That is what I was hoping for, and it has been hard to find that information. Thanks so much :-)

To be fair, most top speakers sold today have a cross over function built in as a switch or a menu option in their DSP. But i guess there is still a minority who could have an issue with this. I use EV subs with QSC tops and it's been working out well so far. And most times i prefer not to cross over the box to get a bit more bass anyway.

Yeah like the Presonus air series tops none of them have a crossover in them it’s depended on the matching sub to do it was thinking about getting a pair to use in my cheaper rig because they sound great for the price but because they don’t have a crossover built in I don’t want them!

Running tops hi-passed for music playback is silly anyway. Best using all available headroom on sub-bass frequencies as the subs will limit way before the tops if the tops are hi-passed. Run tops full range and cross over subs at 80-100hz will mean the whole system will limit at about the same point in most situations. Obviously you'd need to delay the subs or tops so that they work in phase. My main system is double 10" (dipole) tops and an 18" sub per side. I cross over subs at 80hz and run them as infras, tops naturally tail off at 60hz. I apply 4.4ms of delay to the subs and it brings it all into phase. It gives a nice warm punch at 60-80hz and the system has plenty of headroom at 30-60hz and at 80hz-20khz outwith the overlap region. If you have dual 18s per side then they'll keep up with a decent pair of hi-passed tops and it's worth hi-passing. Or if you are running a band/vocalist and want to reduce IM distortion caused by low frequencies.
@TheAngrySoundTech
@TheAngrySoundTech 2 жыл бұрын
I'd say not running a properly crossed over system sounds like a recipe for phase cancellation and comb filtering but if you're happy with the sound that's the main thing that matters. Have you tried crossing over your tops? You'd probably end up with cleaner sounding mids/low mids if your tops aren't trying to produce sub bass.

I just ordered one EV etx 18sp to go with my two RCF art 735 tops. I need a sub and all affordable rcfs are out of stock for a while. It's only for outdoor events with edm type music, what would you recommend the connection setup be with only one sub: mixer stereo left to sub to left top and mixer stereo right to right top? Or anything different? I'd like to have the option for a proper crossover in case I'm not satisfied with the tops going full range. What external crossover would you recommend and where would I connect it in this particular setup? Thanks for your help!

Forgive length For small events, I pair single EKX-15 sub w/2 QSC CP-12s. QSCs have 2 "with sub" modes (standard and dance). Manual says, "...factory voicing of the loudspeaker with an 80 Hz high-pass filter for use with live music, program music, or instruments, and an external subwoofer..." Does that mean CPs have crossover, or is it something else?
@TheAngrySoundTech
@TheAngrySoundTech 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, the CP-12's have a built in crossover fixed at 80Hz when in "Default Ext Sub" mode or "Dance Ext Sub" mode. So to properly crossover your system you would want to set the crossover on your EKX-15SP at 80Hz.

So you want to use an EV active subwoofer with a evolve 50 top cabinet? or am I misunderstanding you? Both the evox from rcf and the evolve tops are passive...
@TheAngrySoundTech
@TheAngrySoundTech 2 жыл бұрын
When I'm talking about adding a subwoofer to a column array system I'm talking about people that add an extra sub for more bass. As in putting a single 15" sub under your DJ table, running your left/right through the sub and then running XLR's from the sub to your Evolve 50's. The EV subwoofers have a half implemented crossover and are not the best solution for this situation because it's is unable to just pass the high frequencies to the evolve 50. Instead it passes the full range signal. You should need to use an external crossover to have a properly crossed over system.
@karstenpe
@karstenpe 2 жыл бұрын
@@TheAngrySoundTech Ahh now I think I get it. In that scenario you probably wouldn't want the evolve to play any bass, right? Just have the evolve sub there as an amp for the tops?
@TheAngrySoundTech
@TheAngrySoundTech 2 жыл бұрын
I would typically set the crossover on the extra sub at 80hz and let it handle the low bass. Then the sub of the Evolve would do 80hz-200hz which would be the more punchy bass. Then the evolve tops would do everything 200hz and up.

Great content, Why don't Manu's have these kinds of videos in their instructional vids? I have an idea for your next video! How to EQ ETX18sp with ETX-35p's so you can max them out without blowing woofers? I've had mine for years and it's always running sound for bands that kills my woofers. I could now explain it but I don't have the time and I want to see your skills at work. Also skip elx ekx and Alto and below Budget brands. If you want to be a big dog don't buy budget speakers. I must add that I have a pair of Denon Axis 12s 2000 watt Subs that I have been using for @ 5 years, They have long excursion, no slap back and can handle RAP style BASS with no clapping while being over driven. I wish I could buy more but they were bought out.

First of all, very few self respecting DJs would even own ELX speakers, never mind actually use them at a gig. They are just too much of a compromise when you can get the EKX for just a little more coin and have a system that will last a lifetime. Also, most speakers companies are switching over to full pass-through of the signal because that is the preferred method, so it's an "EV thing" per se, and eve if it was, it's still the better way to go so it's pointless to make a big deal about it.
