Rory Bremner, impressionist and Audi ambassador, investigates the cost of servicing an electric car in comparison with a traditional combustion engine model. In the third episode of the Audi EV Myth Busting Series, he finds that fewer ‘mechanical oily bits’ in the EV than the ICE car result in lower service costs.

I've just paid £218 for the first service on my eTron 55, @ 19,000 miles, they wanted to charge me £280+, not so cheap after all!

Hmmm. It maybe a temporary thing, but if you happen to live in Scotland or the north of England and need work done on the battery. Then it’s off to Aberdeen for your car.

Let’s look at a real world scenario of “beyond the service”. I have just paid $ 2000+ to have the 12V battery (not the high voltage main battery) replaced in my 2019 Audi Etron with 45,000 miles on it. This included: Diagnosis, parts, labor and towing (car was completely dead without warning: $239). So wherein services may be cheaper, anything like this is FAR more expensive compared to an ICE vehicle.

Wouldn’t that have a lot to do with the fact it’s an Audi? If the fuel pump died on my Hyundai i30 for example, I would suggest the cost of diagnosis and repair would be a lot less than that of any Audi of the same age. This would only be due to the fact it was a “premium” car that comes with a premium price tag. I would also suggest that there are countless scenarios where an easy diagnosis and repair on a vehicle using a combustion engine was not provided leading to extortionate repair costs due to incompetence. We all know how corrupt the tow truck industry is also, a typical tow cost in Australia can be around the $400 to $600 mark and don’t even mention the cost if you are more than 150kms from home. I agree your issue sounds trivial and should have been easily and cheaply fixed but there is a dire shortage of tradesman world wide who are properly trained to diagnose and repair EV’s. The biggest issue we have at the moment is the total lack of proper support for the repair and replacement of battery packs. This will come. Just remember every time you start a cold internal combustion engine you are causing it damage and creeping closer to the day the engine will finally give up and die. Imagine the cost of replacing the engine on a LandCruiser or Audi shitbox should it suffer a catastrophic failure not covered by warranty. Have a look at what a replacement automatic transmission costs these days. They are so sophisticated they are often unrepairable and require a new one be supplied from the manufacturer. If I were you I would be checking the consumer protection laws in your part of the world and changing my insurer if they didn’t cover tow costs.

Considering that you need a £3500+ diagnostic tool with software that costs ~£1000 per year to even touch anything on these EVs and Hybrids, people are always shocked when a garage looks to pass that increased cost onto the vehicle owner. "Whats that? You need to buy thousands of pounds worth of specialist tools and training to work on my EV? How dare you try and charge me more as a result!"

Same can be said for any ICE vehicle. Petrol and diesel engine management is so sophisticated (complicated) diagnostics is required to direct the tradesman in the right direction. Often it is a process of elimination meaning replacing sensors until the problem is fixed.

Just to be clear, this video is misleading and only cover parts and not the labor, basic service is £399 Audio offers 3 levels of service plan on a Q4 and it's not cheap: Level 1 covers the essentials, including one service and inspection, a pollen filter change and brake fluid change. That package costs £399 Level 2 costs £785 and includes two essential services, as well as two brake fluid and pollen filter changes. Level 3, which costs £880 upfront and builds on the previous package, with two MoTs covered in the third and fourth year of ownership. So regardless of the lack of requirements for parts, it's £48 as per this video and £350 labour to inspect, pollen change and fluid change!!!

Yes, I don't think servicing an EV is that cheap. Very misleading.
