C, it may be. For sure, it should be high on most jazz lovers list. It’s on my list, even though she died within six months of recording it. There isn’t the body of work that the established greats have, making it hard to compare her with Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, Nina Simone, and the like. Watch out for Angelina Jordan making her way onto that list, also.
@hoopfool8
@hoopfool8 2 жыл бұрын
@@jeffstumpf9129 I am a giant Angelina Jordan fan, glad that my first experience of her amazing artistry was the audition in Norway's Got Talent. I tell young people to listen to Billie Holiday's version FIRST to see where AJ is coming from and then to listen to her. Her cover of Lana del Rey's "Born To Die" is better than the OG, IMO.

I feel what has always made Eva so special, and most especially with this song, is that she has the incredibly rare talent of transcending the lyrics and music of a song and rather tells the story that the song is attempting to capture. Without the movie, Garland is just singing a song that's not particularly meaningful or memorable. That doesn't take away from the performance. But Eva? Eva tells the timeless story of youthful innocence coming to an end, dreams, longing and hope.

For most, words are hard to find after hearing this, silent awe and a few tears are common, deservingly. Regarding "why the dislikes" to this, the only answer I can come up with is I know there's people (my cousin, for one) who so love Judy Garland that they're blinded somewhat by it. Me, I love both for different reasons, but Eva's is the perfect, purist version. RIP, Eva, as well as Judy. May you both live in the hearts of the many forever.

There is quite a back story to Eva and it is that she passed away before she became famous; this song was played on an English Radio station one day and she completely took off; the equivalent of a viral explosion in England and later in America. And you are correct this is the ultimate, totally original version of this song. It makes you hear it all over in a different way from any of the versions out there. React to anything, she is SO original.

Eva's version is a sad version, yes I know she was dying of cancer, BUT when Lucy Thomas did her cover tribute to Eva it was a most beautiful happy version with the accompanyment of a fantastic Guitar Player, James Franklin. And Lucy and James did the song proud creating the best version I have ever heard, why I came to see what Eva did. And Lucy has a better singing voice, wider range, more music in her singing, more breath and voice control and a higher range to her voice !!! Lucy mailed it in tribute to Eva !!! And James played a soft flowing accustic version that was just fantastic !!! Great cover, the best !!! You should check out Lucy's version IF you liked this one !!

Daniel, this was recorded in January 1996. She was diagnosed with the news of the spread of melanoma in June of 1996. She passed in November 1996. So, no, the passion of the song doesnt come from diagnosis news so please stop stating that. Her true story needs no embellishment. Im not trying to come down on u but u have posted this in multiple reactions. Listen to the words and see the passion she delivers them with. Can u not understand what her dreams were? She was virtually unknown outside of the Washington DC area. Its said, she sold copies of the Blues Street recordings out of the trunk of her car. She was offered record contracts from producers that wanted to pidgeon hole her style and control her music. She was not going for that. Finally she got a contract to her liking and that company went bankrupt before an album could be made. And now we listen and enjoy her music posthumously. It also has been said that she would not record a song that didnt mean something to her personally. The result of that speaks for itself. Superb arrangement, virtuoso guitar picking and chord digressions, emotive and passionate singing. Best version ever.

Eva Cassidy is a singer that comes once in a lifetime. She has a clear angelic voice. In addition to this Eva understands the emotions of the lyrics & music of each song. Then she creates & sings the song the way she felt. That’s why her songs are unique & are her creations. This song (Over The Rainbow) is by Eva is so moving compared to the original version by Judy Garland. Similarly, the song Autumn Leaves has been sung by many singers (including Nat King Cole) do not have the same emotions as that by Eva Cassidy. Every-time I listen to Autumn Leaves by Eva, I get teary. It is a very sad song about missing someone. Eva was able to bring out the emotion attached to this song. Additionally Eva is a great guitarist with great control over her voice. Thank you Eva for your music. RIP Eva, God bless you & keep you.

Yes, Eva and IZ my favorites although there is a rare Garland version as the last song of a concert way back when and the ONLY time she ever performed it in a concert. Quite moving. Also, let me introduce you to “John Gary” a ballad vocalist who passed away I believe in 1998 at the age of 68 but whose First LP in 1963 titled “ Catch A Rising Star” contained his rendition of “ once upon a time”- my favorite nostalgic song. ( I’ll be 76 tomorrow). John Gary was Elvis Presley’s favorite ballad vocalist. “ once upon a time” Gary soars to the celestial realm on a few long sustained high notes. He had a 4 octave vocal range. Please play it privately for my birthday and let me know if you enjoyed it. Much love in isolation from Miami Beach, Florida. -Al❤️

Thank you so much for taking the time to truly listen & emotionally engage with the piece, without interruption or comment until after its conclusion. So many reaction videos are ruined for me, because reactors lack the attention span to really listen & feel, without needing to stop the video after every phrase & offer inane inconsequential insight. Whether music or comedy, or thought provoking speech, each piece under review has required extensive thought, rewriting & editing, or extraordinary talent to formulate. We owe it to those people to not only hear, but to truly listen to it in its entirety before giving our reaction. If reactors were listening to something for the first time live, they wouldn't be talking over the artist at the end of every sentence, as it would be incredibly rude, shallow, & ruin every performance. Some people have completely lost the equally important art of listening patiently. You haven't. 👌👍

Eva Cassidy unfortunately had her life cut short and we have missed her music all these years. She had perfect pitch in tone with such clarity. Another artist I think you would enjoy is Angelina Jordan. She is currently 15 years old and one Norway's Got Talent at age 8! She sings any genre with specialty in jazz and soul and classics. She is so incredibly talented and was recently signed by Republic records. Check out Rusty shackleford's homepage on KZfaq and you'll see a chronological playlist of over 135 recordings from ages 6 to 15. There are some originals in there as well. You mentioned about losing someone, Angelina in the past few months wrote an original song called a million miles which is dedicated to her grandfather who passed away and also is a tribute to anyone who has lost a loved one. It is a masterpiece of Hope and emotion

You ask the question, "Why would anyone dislike this performance?" You say 3.7 thousand people out of 19 million viewers of this song disliked it. The answer is that it's called a Bell Curve. When I went to university, the grades of exams were placed on a bell curve. Intelligence has a bell curve. Emotional intelligence also has a bell curve. There are a select few at the top of the bell curve and others at the bottom of the curve. It doesn't matter what you are talking about -- there are always those who will be at the bottom of the curve. Always those who dislike something and it matters not what it is.

It is a sad version and this turns people off who do not understand the back story of Eva who was dying of cancer when she recorded this song !! ! Too many people make emotional decisions without any facts !!

This was never one of my favourite songs until I heard this version 30 years ago. It's the voice obviously, but it's also the distinctive phrasing. And as a guitar player myself I can tell you her guitar playing is phenomenal.

You must listen to Kenny Rankin. Blackbird or While my guitar gently weeps. George Harrison had Kennys version of guitar at his funeral, Kenny is a wonderful singer ,guitarist songwriter who like Eva is no longer with us.

Sorry, what you said is NOT true. The song was recorded in Jan 1996, Eva was diagnosed in June of 1996 and passed away in November of 1996.

This recording was in January of 1996. She learned she had metastatic melanoma in June or July, 1996. And she died in November of 1996. Gone way too soon 😪♥️😇
