That was one of l think 31 songs she recorded live at this Blues Club over two nights. Unfortunately because technical problems about half the recordings were lost, 12 of her remaining recordings were released on an album. She did not want this one released as she had a cold and thought her vocals were off, you can hear her voice crack a little at the very end. If l remember correctly she was diagnosed with terminal cancer about six months after this recording. Apart from being one of the best singers l have ever heard, she was a great instrumentalist, her guitar playing is exceptional in this performance, a truly great artist.

Eva Cassidy was so incredible what a voice and talent. It was such a tragedy and loss to the world when she died of cancer at only 33 years old in 1996, but her music will forever live on. Some other Eva Cassidy recommendations are Danny Boy, Time After Time, Fields Of Gold, Autumn Leaves, What A Wonderful World, Songbird. Thank you for your beautiful reaction.

Hi Jennifer,I have just enjoyed listening to Eva Cassidy, her style of interpretation is unique and each song very individualistic.A BBC Radio presenter called Terry Wogan brought her to the attention of British audiences and she took off here so to speak.Sadly she passed away of a cancer related illness in 1996 aged 33 years.Thank you for a lovely review.Cheers Roly🇬🇧.

She lived from 1963 to 1996. Just 33 years. She died from complications of melanoma cancer. She was from Washington D.C. and same a bevy of different genres mostly in local blues clubs. Someone had the foresight to make a camcorder tape of about 12 of her performanceces at that Blues Club. They were attempting to get her a record contract but unfortunately the wanted her to choose one genre or another and it failed to work out. They released a tape of her in England and she became an instant hit there a couple years after her death. Well to make a long story short, like her life, fortunately the person that bestowed the talent apon her, and coincidentally lived to be about 33 years +/-, had seen to it that her more than spectacular interpretation of the song written back in 1939 for the movie "THE WIZZARD OF OZ " and sung wonderfully by a very young Judy Garland, to take on a very poinient meaning that is very much in pace with the Biblical End Times we are venturing into today. Possibly that the Sign that God left in the Sky at the end of Noah's Flood(deluge) was a Rainbow. A sign that he would not destroy mankind again is also the Sign in the Sky that come the Rapture of God's Church, we wil, like the little bluebird, fly over that very Rainbow to meet Him in the Sky.

Other masterpieces from Eva: Fields of Gold: Sting said he should have sung it the way she covered it. Angelina Jordan sang it in the way Eva did. She is a huge fan. Otherwise: Autumn Leaves, Blues in the Night, Nightbird, Stormy Monday, Time after Time, Songbird, What a wonderful world, Imagine, ….

Eva was actually not feeling well the night of this performance where they recorded many songs. She had declined a record deal because they wanted to confine the genre of music that she would be putting out. She unfortunately passed away from melanoma the worst form of skin cancer about 6 months after this performance. About 2 years after her death a DJ in England played this over the air and was swamped with calls. She became famous after her death. Such a tragic loss to the music world. There are some other great songs from this performance for you to review. I love her version of Autumn Leaves, Fields of Gold by Sting ,and Danny Boy. Her album called Songbird is a wonderful mix of songs. Enjoy!

when singers die young with still so much to offer, their songs become much more poignant! one other singer, opera/x over soprano, patricia janeckova, who died last october from breast cancer aged 25, six weeks after getting married, is one such singer! her renditions of, 'ave maria', 'pie jesu', 'meine lippen', 'think of me' & 'once upon a time in the west', which she sang to win a tv talent contest in slovakia aged 12, are songs which will have the same effect as eva's brilliant version of, 'over the rainbow'!!!

Jennifer, Happy New Year. I actually requested this in one of your live streams over a year ago but you don't remember. It's okay because every time you hear this it feels like the first time. Eva passed in 1996 from melanoma at the age only 33. She did not know she was dying when she performed this, 10 months before her death. However, the mood she sets is haunting as if she had a premonition. She was not very well known at the time, other than her home area of Washington DC. It was sometime after her death that copies of this song were circulated to a couple of radio stations, and it went viral with their phones ringing off the hooks. Since then, Eva has become legendary, selling 10 to 20 million albums since her death! Eva is in my top three female vocalists of all time as her emotion and tone make her an unmatched storyteller. Eva's version of Fields of Gold by Sting is another gem, and there is a version of a virtual duo mashup between Eva and Angelina Jordan, recorded a couple of years ago. Definitely another for reaction. Hope you're well. Peace and love.

At the time of this performance, Eva had already been treated for melanoma at least a yearor two earlier. The treatment resulted in her employer's health insurance being cancelled. Having no health insurance and being paid a low salary, she missed her follow-up appointments. A few months after this performance she began experiencing hip pain and was diagnosed with metastacized melanoma. She died less than a year after this gig. To me, part of the poignancy is that surely she knew cancer was hanging over her head as she performed.

Ah you have found another treasure! This live at Blues Alley, DC area, is legendary, all the songs captured there are masterpieces and this one in particular. She revisited completely this classic, revealing the beauty of the words by slowing it down, and bringing different emotions. It has become the new reference and the new generation is used to sing it that way. Sadly, Eva passed away shortly after. This was recorded early Jan 1996. In May she discovered she had melanoma and in November she was gone. The last song she sang a few weeks before her death, in front of her friends, knowing this would be her ultimate live performance? “What a wonderful world” 😱😢

@@TheSpeakEasyLounge she was the queen in reinventing classics. Whether it is ballads, blues, jazz or gospel. Only made covers but all these became her own and often the reference for new generations. This song was played on BBC 5 years after her death and it was suddenly a tsunami of requests about her. 5 albums were created from her recordings and all of these reached #1 in UK (only beatles had achieved it before). She sold posthumously more than 10M records there. My second preferred singer after Lara. And I only discovered her a couple years ago.

She kept performing with help getting to the stage until 6 weeks prior to her death in November 1959. We will never know what she could have accomplished if she had not died at such an early age. Eva's band was desperate to get something on record(no record contract), so they scraped together enough of their own money to have a friend with a mobile recording setup do a live two night session at Blues Ally. The first nights recording was unusable due to technical issues, so everything depended on the second nights results that was turned into the Live at Blues Ally record. The amateur video of some of that nights performance was unplanned, but resulted in one of the very few examples of Eva preforming her magic. Talent alone won't guarantee success and life isn't always fair, Eva died that same year. Eva didn't chart until two years after she died, she never knew how many people came to lover her music.

It was only blocked for the first 48 hours, but I had to dispute the copyright claim and they literally just released it yesterday as monetizable and available to stay on the channel. Actually, youtube released it because they didn't respond in the 30 day period, so YT released it. Now, back to doing lives...

Yes, your Speak Easy sound system needs its settings changed. This is waaaayy to much reverb and echo. A real disservice to Eva's wonderful voice :(

Thanks for reacting to this version of Over the Rainbow, but why the echo effect? If you are trying to bypass KZfaqs algorithms, adding echo isn't going to fool it. It just ruins the song for your viewers. Thousands of other people on YT react to songs without getting strikes. In the end, I wish that Google would get a grip and realize that reactors introduce a lot of people to their music who may otherwise never have found them.

It's my audio, not on purpose. I've been trying to figure out the problem, it only started recently. I am working on it though. It isn't any trick, just bad settings on my part! lol. I really was shocked that I'd never heard of her before, so sad that she passed at such an early stage of her career. I don't know a lot about her, but truly enjoyed this.

@@TheSpeakEasyLounge Thanks for the reply. I am sorry that I jumped to a conclusion. I have heard so many reaction videos with a similar sound, and in a few they made it clear that it was being done to obfuscate the video for copywrite reasons. I first heard Eva's version of Kathy's song used as backing music to a video. I had never heard of Eva. I actually commented on the video asking the uploader about the song, and she introduced me to Eva Cassidy. I have been a fan ever since. It is really sad that she died so young. It is also nearly a miracle that we even know her name now. There are a few really good mini documentaries on her life hear on YT.

Yes, someone shared a link here somewhere, I haven't had a chance to watch it yet. I do plan on it. You are ALWAYS welcome here at the lounge, jumping to conclusions is considered "Excercise" in my vocabulary! lol. Do, say what you like..I am not thin-skinned! lol. You fit right in with the other "Lounge Lizards" (TSEL followers) You should join us Wednesday for our live stream! I start at 7pm EST, come request a song or two and hang out in the live chat! Cheers!

Wrong version, someone ADDED a whole lot of reverb into the original mix, and it in NOT an improvement, at all.

@@TheSpeakEasyLounge I have heard the same version on a few other channels so it is that recording. Over time many extra sound tracks and manipulations have been added to Eva's work and most times it is not an improvement. The most common version of Eva's Chain of Fools on youtube is the one where a horn section and back up singers were added to the voice tracks(an improvement)....there are many more examples out there that are not so successful.

Sounds as if the KZfaq audio feed included both the recording audio and your studio audio with about 5 microseconds delay. You could consider using headphones so when you merge the two audio streams you don't get the doubling of her voice.

Your sound system is really poor and it is a disservice to Eva's fine voice. Her original You Tube Video is not like this. @@TheSpeakEasyLounge
