Evacuating the Summit Six Chair Lift at Mt Hutt, after a malfunction due to high wind, New Zealand
The lift’s wire rope came off the tracks when high winds blew the chairs around. All the chairs had to be let down one at a time, each taking 10 or so minutes with about 30ish chairs to be let down. Mountain crew started from top of the mountain to the bottom, which is where we were, so we were one of the last groups.
There was a capsule on the back of the seat with a rope inside that we threw down to the crew below. They attached a stronger rope with a tbar seat on the other end, for us to pull back up and thread through a carabiner above. They then lowered us down using that.

@Steven Goodnight I love skiing but I'm also afraid of heights! The longest gondola in the world is near me. It's about a 20 minute ride and you can't even see the ski hill from the bottom. There's also a spot at Durango mountain in Colorado where one of the ski lifts goes over a cliff wall and that big sky in Montana though often shut the lifts down in their bowl as it gets too windy. I've been on that when it happened. Not cool 😬😬😬

When I was a member of the Canadian Ski Patrol System back in the ‘80s we practiced this type of lift evacuation - it is not as scary as you might think - the patrollers are well trained and the technique has been perfected - it is really a simple matter of following the instructions and trusting the equipment. The only difficult part is the “leap of faith” when you slide out of the chair and let the rope take your weight - it will stretch a bit, but the team on the ground will pull against the stretch, and most people barely notice when they have completely left the chair. This team of Ski Patrollers did a great job keeping the skiers calm. Well done 👍 !

I learned to ski on Mt Hutt 9 years ago. Then I tore the ligament in my knee the next day (my 50th birthday) so that was the end of my skiing career lol. The next day we got the chairlift to the top of the mountain & just took in the breathtaking beautiful views of the snow capped mountains behind Mt Hutt & then got the chairlift back down again. It never even occurred to us that the chairlift could break down. So glad I wasn't on the chairlift when it broke cos it feels like it's a long way down to the snow below. Mt Hutt is an awesome place to go skiing & Abisko Lodge in Methven is a great place to stay 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

Most kiwis do a fairly good job of keeping themselves calm, so it makes it a bit easier. I heard a kiwi describe how he was riding his mountain bike home after the most destructive earthquake in a modern city - the roads were impassable to motorised traffic (Christchurch NZ) and the arterial road he was on had turned into a river of liquefied subsoil. His bike fell into a narrow crack and he was wearing those shoes which clip in to the pedals, the crack was stopping him twisting out and the mud was at neck level, and rising. Fortunately the aftershocks were coming fairly regularly, and one happened along and opened the crack, releasing him. He told the story as if it was a fairly interesting event in a moderately interesting day.

There must be good reasons why there isn’t 25 metres of rope ladder in a pouch behind the seat. If you had hundreds of rescues to perform in icy conditions maybe 75% could make their own way down quickly, allowing rescue crews to concentrate on the others. Admittedly, transition to rope ladders is always tricky, but skiers are generally fit and it’s not like it’s compulsory to take the ladder. If it was the choice between a 5 hour wait and a 5 minute wait, I’d take the ladder.
@Nxtn
