Evacuation orders issued as Point Fire in Sonoma County surpasses 1,000 acres

The Point Fire northwest of Healdsburg in Sonoma County ballooned up to more than 1,100 acres as of Monday morning, with some evacuations in effect, Cal Fire said. Bob Redell and Kari Hall report.

I remember not long ago when all of these outlandish,large homes started protruding from the hills in the Dry Creek Valley which was becoming Gentrified by Wealthy East Coast people. All of those houses have no proper access or escape roads.The county issues building permits off old fire roads and logging cuts with no fire suppression plans.

@@AshGreen359 Mill Valley is a different kind of landscape and climate than Dry Creek valley.Dry Creek has the conditions for explosive fire storm conditions. Mill Valley gets a moisture Fog blanket every day. Dry creek 100 degrees,Windy and madrone oak and pine mix.The roads to those silly looking homes are nothing more than one lane driveways with no hydrants for fire fighting or rapid escape.

agreed but to be fair the fires a number of years ago killed a lot of older residents who lived in small cottages down little lanes. All those charming places I'd dream of living!

The turbo prop S 2 air craft don't shut down their "engines" because the service cycle of the power plants are rated in starts and stops, not just operation time. These turbo props don't require a warm up time like a piston engine and could take off with out delay as soon as they taxied to the runway.

They're sure a lot quieter than the old Billy Mitchells. The government was going to give California Warthogs and they wouldn't take them because they would have to retrain all their pilots and mechanics.

My plan for making my town more fire safe is to work to turn our roads and driveway into safe, first responder access and resident evacuation routes. Also, all of our roads and driveways could be far more effective fire breaks! It’ll take cooperation and work from both residents and government agencies to do this. Yes, during high winds, all bets are off. But if every road had 25’ of cleared brush and mowed grass on each side of each road, and if we make defensible spaces around our buildings, and harden our buildings to fire, firefighters could more easily contain fires!
