Evacuation under fire: rescue mission in Kherson / hromadske

After russians blew up the dam of the Kakhovka Reservoir on June 6, water began to rise quickly to the cities on both sides of the Dnipro. On the same day, Kherson itself began to flood. The hromadske crew worked in Kherson for four days, documenting how the water locked local residents in a trap. Those who hoped on June 6 that the water would not reach their homes found themselves surrounded the next day. Groups of rescuers, military, police, and even volunteers came to their rescue. They not only evacuated but also persuaded local residents to leave. Some residents of Kherson refused to evacuate, hoping that the water would recede quickly.

The resilience and caring that is on display in this video is awe inspiring. The gentleman who refused to be evacuated stating I live on an island I was told in the 80's there might be flooding and demonstrated his preparedness for such an event is amazing. He even has his own inflatable boat. I don't think he ever planned on the dam being blown up by Russians but he can take care of himself but many are not so lucky. Until the flood waters recede I can envision the rescuers bringing provisions and fresh water, and cigarettes, to the people who decided to stay. So many good people yet again displaced due to Putin's madness. It has to end or he has to come to an end politically or in any way possible. No one will grieve the loss of Putin. Even China has expressed its displeasure at Putin's latest attempt to annihilate the people of Ukraine. That his troops still attack buildings in the flood zone increases the danger of the people trapped in their homes without access to basements makes the risk of staying there even harder and makes rescuing them more dangerous. No one has told us where or what is being launched toward the area of flooding caused by the bombing of the Nova Kakhovka dam so we can only pray that their aim is really bad. If they are Russian troops and Ukraine cuts their supply lines they will soon learn what it means to be without fresh water. I don't think Putin's army will make sure they are provisioned. Our prayers are with you and we know Ukraine will be victorious and Putin's troops will leave with their tails tucked between their legs. Slava Ukraine!

I think that you're being a little unfair, I don't believe that the UN. relief agency or many if any humanitarian workers are willing to put their ppl. in active war situations where they are likely to be targeted. I didn't get the impression that these rescue volunteers were risking their lives, they obviously know what they're doing, and they aren't going back repeatedly to try to convince ppl. to leave, if the ppl. won't budge they will organize food drops etc. for them. We see the same here in Australia when there is a bushfire or flooding, ppl. get attached to their homes and often don't want to be in an unfamiliar environment, also they often feel they have to stay to protect their home from fire, looters or vandals! In civilized countries no-one is forced to leave.

Велика подяка волонтерам, які працюють з ранку до ночі, щоб допомогти людям вибратися із западні. А те, що деякі відмовляються покидати свої домівки, то їх можна зрозуміти. Особливо люди похилого віку, їм так важко покидати рідні місця. Це навіть страшніше за відхід у вічність для деяких людей. Особисто я їх розумію і дуже співчуваю.

велике дякую всім волонтерам за допомогу, а деяким занадто впертим херсонцям я хочу порадити просто евакуюватися, вода зійде - повернетеся, не заради себе, а заради збереження життів волонтерів, бо крім великої води ще й окупанти обстрілюють, наче й так мало лиха наробили!!!

Кожного разу дивуюсь: що у людей в головах? Рятівники, волонтери, військові ризикують своїм життям, а ті, що залишилися, вирішили, що то служба доставки. До них не доходить, що вони не в одному місці знаходяться, а по всьому великому місту.
