This classic song is credited to members of the New Orleans Rhythm Kings and was recorded by Django Reinhardt in 1938 with Benny Carter.
For this 2014 Marciac Jazz Festival concert, Evan Christopher's Clarinet Road featured a France-based rhythm section with David BLENKHORN (guitar), Sébastien GIRARDOT (bass) & Guillaume NOUAUX (drums).

When I was little kid starting out in school band, I thought the clarinets always sounded like such a bore, then (being a trumpet player myself) I pretty soon after started listening to Louis Armstrong and hearing his group, along with other groups, I was like damnnnnn jazz clarinet players go hard

largest range eof any wind instrument. From 4 below to 4 above the staff. We have a 4 octave range.

I always like the sound of jazz clarinet! Sax is great, but the clarinet has something mellow and smooth about it that the sax can't match!

In highschool I took jazz band, and I had to play saxophone, and to this day I'm still salty. Clarinet is so perfect for jazz, yet underappreciated.

I've played in big bands / jazz bands for almost 50 years and have always had to double on clarinet (+ bass clarinet and flute). To say that there are no clarinets in jazz band is not at all accurate. To be fair, though, you should learn sax - it's not a big jump (and I think it's easier than clarinet).

If you want to make any money playing jazz woodwinds, you'd better be able to double. You can espouse ideals all that you want but ideals won't feed you.

This is Selmer's "Improved" Albert system made in the 1930s. It was popular with many New Orleans clarinetists back in the day.

@@evanchristopherclarinet1559 Johnny Dodds for instance...or maybe not.. form the old pictures his clarinet seems to have had six mobile rings as a "full" Bohem (those descending to the written low e flat)

There are a couple photos out there of Dodds with a Selmer like this, but I don't know when that was or if he ever recorded on it. ...Range is normal, no low Eb key. ...I don't know of any photos where the rings under his fingers are visible, but I doubt he would have preferred the ones with six rings.

@@evanchristopherclarinet1559 oh the low Eb key exists only in french system clarinets, I know :) used baiscally here in Italy and in Spain ... www.amazon.com/Olivers-Photo-African-American-Photograph/dp/B07G1RXHDZ in this pic Dodds has two clarinets with six rings - one must be an A clarinet - I've always assumed that he used those kind of intruments... as Jimmie Noone if I well remember his photoes...and maybe Barney Bigard :) all the best

That clarinet looks like Selmer, with Albert system fingering; the instrument, I think, was made nearly 100 years ago… Stradivari of clarinets! 🙂

Nope. Just Albert system. ...This is an old Selmer with 6 rings. Maybe that's why it looks like it has more keys.

After many, many years of hearing upright bass solos...I still can't figure out... Why can't we get pickups/microphones on the bass so I can hear the bass solo well? I'm always disappointed with the sound level of the bass solo. Awesome music though guys. Thanks for sharing. Wonderful stuff!

Yes. Their mix could have used a touch more bass. But for me, the problem is any performance situation that *requires* microphones for the bass. These types of outdoor situations are *not* for this type of music. ...Virtually impossible to get them to make decent sound *on* stage the priority. However, what are you listening on? With good speakers, I think Marciac did a better job than most.

keep it up. I'm a professional cook but I can't tell you how much joy being abel to come home and create music once Ina blue moon has brought me. To be able to just get home and throw some creativity out to the world is invaluable. And adults always seem so fascinated when they run into someone who can read music in the wild. Everything your band teacher says about your reading ability, math skills, and situational awareness are true. I find myself using the old skills a decade after leaving high school. I'm now teaching my 8 year old nephew how to read sheet music (basic piano poke key songs). Stay with band it will serve you well the rest of your life.

@@danktankdragkings7117 Really great advice! I played classical clarinet from middle school to uni, but I eventually dropped off after the second year. I knew it would be a profession I would never enjoy. However, besides my new major music stayed with me, although it shifted towards techno DJ-ing; my ear for music, and an understanding of the structures helped me learn smoother and faster. Also, playing in a band is good practice for teamwork, a skill that goes a long way.
