Evan mentioned that fantasy is in an incredible place right now... personally, before this channel, I had zero idea who Evan, Nicholas, Fonda Lee, Scott Lynch, Rebecca Kuang (and countless others) was/were. This channel introduced me to those great names. So fantasy being in a great place right now would always have your imprint on it. I personally buy books based on this channels recommendations.

@Ali Turk Woah there. Let's not get too ahead of ourselves here. The fact that Sanderson releases on average 2 full novels a year ( www.reddit.com/r/Stormlight_Archive/comments/6v45s1/no_spoilers_statistical_analysis_of_brandon/ ) with consistently good quality is pretty insane. Winter's second book is going to be released at the end of this year. We'll see if he lives up to the hype.

@@vincentthendean7713 I havn't read Rage of Dragon, so not commenting about it, but the speed of a writer doesn't matter when talking about the quality of a specific book. He didn't say that Winter is on the same level as Sanderson, but (that some critics say) that HIS BOOK is on the same level as Senderson's books. Vary different thing.

This was so interesting to watch since I JUST completed rage of dragons last week and I started King’s of the Wyld literally last night lol God I love Orbit books does anyone else think they just always have the best fantasy? Orbit is probably my top tier publisher I will probably read anything they put out, and rage of dragons was the most fast paced yet simultaneously all consuming story I’ve ever read and I loved it. I’ve also been anticipating kings of the Wyld for so long that I’m also scared to read it because I think it’s going to just smash all other books out of the water for me and idk how to come back from that lol

It is funny that when Nicholas was talking about authors being afraid to use humor, I was thinking about the fact that I am currently rereading Dragonlance (which occasionally drops in pure silliness in the middle of a very serious story). Then, next thing I know the whole discussion turns to Dragonlance. And Daniel, you should read Dragonlance.

Finished "Bloody Rose" a week ago, and I was very impressed. I really liked where it went, thematically, and I would even call it the "Empire Strikes Back" book in the trilogy. "KotW" is fun, thrilling, but "BR" is more. I felt there were more stakes in that book. And on another note, those two books brought back the pure joy of reading, to the point that I actually stopped reading for a day when I started the final 80 pages of "BR", simply because I didn't want it to end. I fear that I'm getting slightly obsessed about Eames' work. :D

Okay, so humor theory is really really cool. One of the big things about humor is that its largely based on perception and making connections between things, and how we interpret disparities of condition and power, incongruities, or just how they make us emotionally rev ourselves up in response to them. One of the things that makes humor in fantasy hard is that humor often thrives on people having things to make comparisons too, and when you are creating a new setting, it can be hard to make those comparisons because you have you work a little bit harder. More modern stories have a bit more of a foot in the relatable experiences of the reader, so its much easier to have it in there. Not that fantasy can't have it, but it can mean that you have to play more with what you are setting up. There are also certain philosophies that I think fantasy struggles with for humor, like how so much of fantasy is world building and establishing the rules of the setting, but humor really likes to set up rules so it can break them, and that can be confusing for fantasy. Humor is a really great tool, and I wish fantasy writers included more because a lot of the tools used for humor are the same tools used for drama. Irony is a great example, relief theory has a lot of similarities with tension dynamics used in thrillers and horror as well as fight scenes, and superiority theory can make protagonists seem humble and make you cheer when villains are torn down.

29:18 I immediately start googling how they translated KotW in Russian and it’s true, it is kinda the translation they used. Although if I took the Russian title as is and translated it into English, I would go with Kings of the Dread or Kings of the Eery. Have not read the book, so I have no idea how either option fits the story. This title would be impossible to translate into Russian literary, so some artistic license would be required anyway.

Lol, could you guys imagine? "Which way is it, Gandalf?" "How the fuck would I know???" Bwahahaha!! XD If LotR had that type of humor in it, Fantasy would be a VERY different genre, but probably even more enjoyable. X,D Edit: Nicholas is such a humble dude, with that "which characters would win in a fight." Evan didn't say anything because that IS a hard question to answer without seeming like prideful - even for the sake of jokingly arguments sake. But Eames gracefully gave the argumentment over to Winter while also finding an even group. "Your character would kill the rest of my old farts, except for the 1 dude that is still in his prime." And Evans rolled with it to keep the conversation going. Because honestly? I think Saga would win. Mostly because of Ganeleon, but here's how i would picture it: Gabriel would rush Tau, Tau's blades would be sheared off, but that would make Tau weary of the OBVIOUSLY magical weapon, so he'd dance around Gab until he'd tire and then finish him off, then would go STRAIGHT for Moog, because you always take out the wild card before it has a chance to really fuck you up, aaand Moog was probably distracting Tau's team enough for Saga to pick them off one by one. And poor Moog, even with all his ridiculous tricks, wouldn't stand a chance against Tau's fury. All the while Clay would have been shouldering attacks from the rest of Tau's team, and Gan and Matt would have finished them off with the help of Moog's antics, and then Ganeleon would be having a time with that big behemoth of a guy (who's name iiii can't remember), before he'd ultimately would finish him off using some sort of dirty trick. Saga isn't about honor in combat. Which, once both sides saw what happened to their allies, would go into rages. Mattrick would rush Tau, being the other duel weilder of the group, and i can see him keeping up with Tau swing for swing, and not letting the kid have an inch, even getting a few good swipes on him. But Matt is old, and fat. He'd tire fast from that pace. Tau would probably give him a mortal wound, or outright behead him. But, between Clay and Gan? I can't see Tau coming out on top, regardless of his rage mode. Clay's sheild is (almost) impenetrable, he's most likely as big as the biggest dude in Tau's band, and Ganeleon is just as much of a monster in combat as Tau. But that's just me. :>
