Bring Me To Life didn't originally have a male part in it anyway. These are the original lyrics. Wind-Up records told them they wouldn't sign them unless they added a male singer, full-time. Evanescence said no, so they compromised on just having a male added to their first single. His lyrical parts were all written AFTERWARDS.

When someone says "no shit", it's to imply something that can easily be inferred has been needlessly pointed out. The information in the original post cannot be extrapolated from the song alone, therefore it's a perfectly reasonably and enlightening comment. However, your insecurity over your intellect is apparent and pointing it out does warrant a "no shit". Therefore, I will refrain from doing so.

There is also a version that exists that removes the male vocalist's parts entirely. I heard that version on my local hit radio station back in the 2000s, it made the song sound really weird, mainly for the male vocalist's part in the bridge. I never thought of his parts as rapping, but I know some people did (close enough, I guess), and some stations remove rapped parts from songs. I'm not sure why it was done in the case of Bring Me to Life, though, as there's no bad words (I could understand it if there was swearing or something), and they actually played numerous other songs at the time which were either straightforward rap songs or pop/R&B songs with guest appearances from rappers. Although in the 2010s, the local classic rock station added Bring Me to Life to their playlist, and they just play the regular version when they play it.

The version with the male lyrics always like a desperate conversation. This however, lacks that making it all the more desperate and sad as there is nobody calling back to her. It’s also strangely unnerving, and I dig it.

The song is just better with the counterpoint. You have staccato aggression juxtaposed with the more vowelly emotion with power chords you need some more percussive vocals to emulsify the thing as the operatic vocals are just too much on their own. It needs that call and response, it alludes to a more evocative story. It's far more dynamically interesting and stops it from sounding like one long unbroken whine. This is why this was their biggest hit by a massive margin.

Search for Bring Me To Life (Bliss Mix) it was on the main single in 2003. The mail voice was a demand from the label because they think Evanescence have to sound "familiar" with that time. The band rehected it and then the resolution was just one song and the first single

Part of that might be the difference in arrangement (choice of instruments). The sweeping orchestral sound with a lone mezzo soprano (and wow her vocals are angelic) contrasts heavily with the distorted bass guitar, heavier drums, rap section, and punchy male vocals of the WAKE ME UP version. 12tone just did a fantastic video on this song that I think you’d really like.

I like both versions for different reasons. For example, I think the one with the male rap is better for radio and this version is SO much better for live performance. There are lots of songs done differently for radio and live. That said, they should have released both versions on the same album.

(yeah necro lol) Personally these are two different issues to me. Besides potentially lacking polish on some effects the original or "demo" version *does* sound better to me than the common one. I still like _both of them_ much more than _this_ version though, because they sound more energetic. This one feels way too slow and melodramatic and I feel the same about the Synthesis version of Imaginary.

So great to hear what Amy’s real creation sounds like. I know for the original, Ev had major fights with the label. But, I truly believe her intended version would never have led to the fame or created opportunities, like the resulting compromise did. This version may have sold ok, but would’ve never been very popular, outside of alternative/grunge genres

I was never an "Amy Lee fan" or anything, I just liked a couple Evanescence songs. It's definitely weird hearing this song without the punching contrast, but it's also so satisfying to hear her round out all of her lines with room to breath. She's so talented, and the ends of the lyrics not being masked by transition really adds a new dimensions that more than makes up for it.

God, I love both versions. Like, I respect the artistic issues with the "original." I'd never push that kind of top-down "we need this to be radio friendly," crap on ANY artist. But they made something amazing despite that. And now this takes the original essence and ideal, and just realizes it to such a beautiful degree. And so now were left with two different takes on the same song, by the same band. And they almost seem to tell the story completely differently, and Express the emotions differently. And I find that beautiful. X3

Honestly, I like both versions. The first one with the male vocals are more energetic and easy to listen (probably because of the nostalgia) but this original version feels so much more emotional and somber. Two different versions of the song, same lyrics, but completely different feeling. Looking forward to the other songs on this album :)

This version made me cry literal tears. Amazing what we could have had in the beginning if it weren't for record companies trying to pet the ego of the male demographic. This was seen as "too feminine" in an era where grungy male singers were the norm, and it pisses me off that we were robbed of this gem until now. Amy Lee is awesome for getting the chance to do her version and choosing to share it with the public.

Incoming haters with the "ITS NOT ROCK" and "IM DONE WITH EVANESCENCE" Its different but that is what her intentions were with this project. It really showcases her voice even more so than it does with the rock instruments. Much like the other projects she has done like her children's album. Amy Lee's true fans will enjoy and find the beauty in this album. The symphony behind her makes it sound really epic and majestic. I bet her tour and seeing this live would be breathtaking.

Tell the truth, I really like both versions. Sure, the "official" version is cheesy, but I like that it's cheesy. It's like victorian melodrama, angst that can crush walls! But it really was perfectly good on it's own before they had the rap vocals pushed on them. Though honestly, I wasn't really feeling it until the industrial drums kicked in.

Very early on as I started writing, I was inspired by the original version of this song. But as I got older, it kinda became this cheesy thing that felt hollow. Years passed, and recently I've been trying to work on a particularly difficult scene. I'm mainly inspired by music, so I've been searching for the right song. So many things either have the wrong lyrics or the wrong ~feel~ for what I'm going for. In a desperate moment, I came back to this song since the lyrics are kinda close to what I wanted... and I found this... and once again my creativity is sparked and saved. Thank you for remastering this. It's amazing.

I just spent a little time reading the various comments, some focusing on the " male vocals ", some comparing this version to the original release, etc. Personally, I like both versions, for different reasons of course, depending on the mood I'm trying to ride. But as a musician myself, I tend to appreciate any musician's continuous search for improvement, or feel of their music. I have to confess that I'm never satisfied with any version of my own songs, I change them sometimes nearly everytime I play them, for the simple reason, I want to be sure that I have made it the best it could be, given the outer limits of my talent. It's called " maturing" and it's a very natural progression in the lifetime of anyone who wants to grow and evolve. Amy I think has a clear understanding of that, if you compare her songwriting, singing, performance, and musical composition you can see it, she is constantly growing and improving. In my opinion, she is headed towards musical perfection.
@carpediemearth

You get it. Amy has always mentioned that she enjoys playing with instrumentation and changing songs up a bit over time. She dislikes doing the same thing over and over. She's even said she goes numb if touring for too long and needs to decompress afterward, live and then go back to create mode.

To be fair, I do myself like the original more (never really cared much for so much orchestral melodrama in my music, it's kind of why Paramore was more my jam back in the day, but if it were Amy herself doing the "can't wake up" bits it would have been 100% objectively better) but this is fine. I mean, that we can even have differing interpretations of music is a beautiful thing. A-ha did a stripped down folksy version of Take On Me, and it's just... Better. At least it sounds that way to me. You might disagree with me and that's totally fine, but that's a beautiful thing, isn't it? Something that I didn't enjoy as much as you did now has a version that caters to my tastes. Even if it isn't my cup of tea, I am glad that this version of this song exists.

"In the shadow of 9/11, American masculinity was in crisis and the music industry seemed keen to cash in on the resulting anxiety by assembling legions of male rap-rock malcontents. Meanwhile, singer-songwriter Amy Lee's sketches of gothic metal with classical foundations became Evanescence's 2003 debut, Fallen. But while shopping the band around for radio play, Wind-up Records head Ed Vetri was allegedly told radio stations wouldn't play "a chick and a piano." So Evanescence reluctantly agreed to add male rap vocals to its lead single, "Bring Me To Life." Paul McCoy, frontman of 12 Stones, came in to insulate chauvinistic rock listeners from Lee's operatic subjectivity. The song would peak at No. 5 on the Billboard Hot 100 and earn a Grammy for Best Hard Rock Performance in 2003 - yet its resulting acclaim was a double-edged sword for Lee. "I've never tried to abandon my femininity with the band," she said in a 2013 interview. "I think it's very aggressive. I embrace that femininity. But I remember having many talks with the suits about that being a negative thing." Lee would later ditch the rap and assert her own vision of the song on the 2017 album Synthesis." -Suzy Exposito Because apparently some people think this is just some shoddy remix and not what the song was originally meant to be.

Whatever, the originally distributed version is better. Her voice don't have the energy. It's beautiful and powerful, but she can only do pretty. The record company did them a huge favor. Their other songs would've gotten half the radio play on half the stations without them adding that dude. What, sober? I think are like 2 others. If she could sing with some more tempo it would be different, but she likes to stick with that opera style and let the instruments do all the rest to transcend genres. It don't work like that.

@@jem5378 Exactly, so don't blame masculinity. She makes her music the way she wanted when it was her turn to make the choice. Didn't sell. It wasn't "masculinity" it was money. That was the drive behind putting the dude in there. It would sell better. And it did. Same thing for system of a down. Surg couldn't do it on his own because his voice was only one aspect. He has the right to make his own music too. I love surg.yet another singer classically trained in opera. But it don't change the fact that it drastically undersold SOAD, but back to Lee. She can make all the synthesis music she wants, just don't blame masculinity when nobody listens to it. It's not gonna meet nearly as many peoples tastes.

Though the Fallen version will always hold a special place in my heart and is probably my favorite, this Synthesis version is like the grand cinematic stage performance version I can easily see in some never before seen Gothic Sci-Fi epic and I am all for it. Glad you got your vision Amy, it looks and sounds beautiful. Both of them. Rock on

How can you see into my eyes like open doors? Leading you down into my core Where I've become so numb Without a soul My spirit's sleeping somewhere cold Until you find it there and lead it back home Wake me up inside (save me) Call my name and save me from the dark (wake me up) Bid my blood to run (I can't wake up) Before I come undone (save me) Save me from the nothing I've become Now that I know what I'm without You can't just leave me Breathe into me and make me real Bring (bring) me (me) to life Wake me up inside (save me) Call my name and save me from the dark (wake me up) Bid my blood to run (I can't wake up) Before I come undone (save me) Save me from the nothing I've become Bring me to life I've been living a lie There's nothing inside Bring me to life Frozen (frozen) inside without your touch Without your love, darling Only (only) you are the life among the dead All of this time, I can't believe I couldn't see Kept in the dark, but you were there in front of me I've been sleeping a thousand years, it seems Got to open my eyes to everything Without a thought, without a voice, without a soul Don't let me die here (There must be something more) bring me to life

Wow I'm years late and after hearing it hundreds of times I find out about the orchestral version and that it's what Amy Lee really wanted. Knowing the story behind it makes this version feel so powerful in a way. Even compared to the original, this one hits different, deeper into the soul and it's slightly painful to hear that pain in her voice. I always thought it sounded like she was singing her pain to us
