Sound Asleep (also known as the Whisper EP) is an EP released in August 1999 by Evanescence. It features the first known recording of "Whisper" along with two of the four instrumental tracks released by Evanescence pre-Fallen. It also contains two versions of the song "Understanding" which had previously gained the band airplay on local radio.
The EP was recorded at Sound Asleep Studios the name given to Ben Moody's home-grown "garage" studio, which later recorded parts of the Origin album, and Ben Moody's solo album You Can't Regret What You Don't Remember. It is common nomenclature for demos and EPs to be named after the studio(s) at which they were recorded - for example, Muse's Sawmills Demo and the Red Hot Chili Peppers' Abbey Road EP.
Only 50 copies of the EP were burnt, and no "second batches" or re-releases were created. Despite being listed as the label, Bigwig Enterprises didn't contribute to the EP or distribute it. It was released with no artwork on CD-R in a flexible 'DiscSaver' case directly to friends and local fans in Little Rock, AR.
Original copies of the EP are understandably very rare. 99.9% of auction listings are fake burned CDs from files found online - most contain incorrect tracks and/or edits of "Ascension of the Spirit". In a quote, Brad Caviness of Bigwig Enterprises clarifies details of the release:
As far as I know, ALL copies of the Sound Asleep EP were burned with same contents and sequencing, including the instrumental version of "Give Unto Me," "Ascension Of The Spirit," and the lengthy silences preceding the hidden tracks. I can truthfully say I never made the statements attributed to me [by the eBay seller] and, in fact, was not in on any of the discussions regarding the contents or sequencing of the disc. My involvement in the EP was limited to some artwork I mocked up for the project (as did Adrian James) that was ultimately rejected when Ben decided to go with the unprinted discs to save money as well as add mystique, and the fulfillment of about ten "orders" for the disc that were run through me to Ben. So far as a I know, all 50 copies were identical, and all were sold within a 24 hour period. -Bradley S. Caviness, Bigwig Enterprises
Track listing
1. Give Unto Me (Instrumental version)
2. Whisper (Sound Asleep version)
3. Understanding (Sound Asleep version)
4. Forgive Me
5. Understanding (Evanescence EP version)
6. Ascension of the Spirit [edited without silence]
Lineup
Amy Lee - vocals, piano
Ben Moody - guitars, drums, keyboards, programming.

I love how the both, tranquil, animated mind moving, and serenity peace empowerment, and connect to justice heavy music rock show-progression, and unchained pain take away of Evanescence is a genuine delight. The magnitude of the musical brilliance is as a pictorial picture show, lingering: delight never still to righteous break-away rightfully this is soulful following that let's loose in its vivid motion so craft brilliant musical; this of re-defining, refining, and moving through endless out-lets out of shadows in my own route to become a professional singer with this inspire I feel I will. The magical vibe of Amy Lee is a major inspire which show's of everything magnificent from natural nature to peace revelation dimension's in this life of love for saturation of the best music. And her music is as a sublime idea catcher's following I gentle love to saturate my-self with as the soft, meaningful and noble proceed to the heavy rock n beat of well-character breakaway from what's in the way pushes away righteous and leaves me speechless, breathless, and following with her as my life and musical hero. My Paramount music following Evanescence is. Amy Lee is my meaningful role model, inspiring my own hone of statements relevant to the lovable nature of Music Essence, for that is truth, harmony, the core of the use of the person's voice is noble use of the kind magical "rise above" then to mighty stand with triumph which are origin's of the truthful honest gentle "strong magical core"; this is as "Essence-As-Ever " at the lover of equality, peace, "UNITY" Life. With strong origin's truth's the truth of the common person empowering: I love this Amy Lee music.....

"Whisper" e "Understanding" com linhas muito próximas da música gótica e do Doom. Não conhecia essas versões! Understanding cheia de momentos melancólicos, bumbos duplo, passagens atmosféricas... Realmente muito boas!

....It was at the end of process-we had finished writing and recording the album, and we were up in New York having meetings. And they said, “Hey, we want to move on without you.” And looking back on it, it was definitely a hard season to deal with all that, and not knowing if the album was going to succeed. But at the same time, I was really glad to be in a headspace of making new music and thinking about different types of music. I remember listening to a lot of John Mayer and Jason Mraz at the time, and thinking I’d like to explore other types of music. they kicked him out on his bday too iirc

He's a pop-country guy and he was never an organic member, he was randomly brought in by Ben as a studio contributor five years after Amy and Ben had already made and recorded their music together. He was only there for a couple years. Ben then fired him before Fallen came out cause he realized he wasn't a good fit for Ev.

Would love to hear her story and meaning behind every song but can't find a full documentary. Ì know she speaks of some. But many more. Especially if there are religious condensations bathing some lyrics as I heard they were a religious band at first.

No they weren't. They said their music was for whatever interpretation but they were never a religious band. That's why Ben wears the collar in the Going Under video because he was so tired of that question. He was making fun of it. If you search for a message board called EvThreads you can find most your answers there. That site used to be called EvBoard and Amy used to frequent it waaaaay back in 03/04/05. Those were the glory days.

@@callacoberly5629 actually Ben was the religious one. He was the reason (and the religious drummer) that the band was originally promoted by the label in the Christian market, he gave a Pre-Fallen interview talking about God and how the band was for God, and thanking and quoting the Bible in Fallen's liner notes. Amy was the one who never wanted that but had to suck it up, and Ben later in a Fallen interview did an about face, cursing and ranting about being promoted in the Christian market.

DK: How did you go from being a teenager who started writing songs, to becoming a member of Evanescence and helping to write their hits? Hodges: The band-Amy (Lee) and Ben (Moody)-are both from Little Rock as well. I met Ben the summer of 1998, and we hung out together. I met his girlfriend, who was Amy at the time, and they were making some music together. Around then, I was doing my own singer/songwriter thing. I went to school in Nashville at Belmont University for a semester, and in that process, I became very disillusioned with the idea of being a singer/songwriter and making music by myself. And I remember talking to Ben about it. He was like, “Well maybe over this Christmas break, let’s try making music together.” And so we started writing songs together, and we just loved the process of it. Then a month later, I dropped out of college, flew back home to Little Rock and we started making music with Evanescence full-time. And about a year later, we got a record deal and moved out to L.A., and then it all happened from there.

DK: At what point did you decide to leave Evanescence? Hodges: Actually the truth of the matter is, they kicked me out of the band. After I dropped out of college, Ben (Moody) and I had moved in together. We spent a year making a demo CD that we called Origin, which got us a record deal. Then we spent about two years living in L.A., the three of us together (with Amy Lee), writing & recording the Fallen album. And towards the end of that process, the three of us were pretty burned out on writing, plus the drama that comes with dealing with record labels, and having little money. We were wondering…are we going to get dropped (from the label), and is this really going to work? So my brain was kind of moving in other directions, thinking about other music and doing other things. And Ben & Amy wanted to continue on and keep going with it.
