As the Cold War heated up in the late 1940s, the prospect of being shot down on a reconnaissance mission over Eastern Europe became real. The US Air Force put together this dramatic training film, shot in Hollywood "film noire" espionage adventure style, to teach downed airmen how to make their way home out of hostile territory. All the capture evasion skills learned during World War 2 are put to good use, along with lessons learned by the CIA on how to operate in Eastern Europe. (Get this film full screen, full resolution on our Evasion DVD bit.ly/17pjW1p )
A B-29 is shot down during a combat mission, far behind enemy lines. The crew is separated during bail out into small groups. What follows are a series of lessons on what to do -- and not to do - to evade capture and make it back to friendly territory. Just a few of the many things you'll learn are: evading blood hounds, what to wear, and not t wear, to blend in with the locals, traveling inconspicuously by day and night, identifying civilians most likely to help you make contact with the underground, what to expect from the resistance and how to deal with them, crossing roads and exposed spaces, using misdirection, diversion & bluffing, crossing heavily guarded boarders -- and a whole lot lot more! Some of the crew make it back, while others don't, all told in a very dramatic and engaging feature film. I digitally restored the audio & video.

Dec 22, 1943 my Dad's B-24 went down over the Netherlands. 7 died in the crash, but 3 lived: Dad was badly wounded and captured, the 2nd also quickly captured. The third man, Sgt. Bevins, was found by the underground and hidden for the duration of the war. He was the longest-duration capture evader in Holland. They moved him among families where he had to act as a deaf-mute. They produced phony papers for him to fool the German occupiers. I met the resistance fighter who helped my Dad, and who made the phony pass papers only days before he Departed aged 97. The meeting was hugely emotional for us both. Thank you Mr. Leo Bult. The last flight for "Tail end Charlie"

My ex-wife's great uncle was a B-29 bomber crewman who was shot down during the Korean war. The entire crew bailed out safely, and were all captured, but managed to overcome their captors and escape to safety over the course of a month by lying low during the day and only moving at night. They couldn't move quickly, because they had to acquire food and avoid patrols along the way. I can only imagine him sitting in a class while watching this movie. RIP Uncle Cono.

I remember being shown this film in the 1970s while in the Canadian Army. We used a lot of US and UK training films as we really didn’t have a lot of locally produced ones. I remember the instructor telling us that even though this film was old at the time, the information was still relevant. I thought the enemy helmets were rather comical, being US helmets with a ridge glued to the top to identify then as “bad guys”.

At the time this movie was made, B-50s were making regular reconnaisance flights well into the Soviet Union (they ended when the Mig15 arrived and made short work of them). Hence the evasion movie being in an eastern European environment, rather than the Asian one it probably would have a year or two later.

Also a very educational film for sinister forces seeking to capture downed airmen...for example, at 12:59, it's better to struggle with the subject of your search in complete silence than to call for help, or otherwise make some noise, and risk the endless teasing and ridicule of your buddies for not being able to hack it.

The parachute packs contained a lot of survival gear, and the first aid kits had a lot of morphine. The captain would have at least been pumped full of enough morphine to see if it could decrease the pain enough to see if he could travel. All the crew members should have had .38's with a couple of extra boxes of ammo each' in the parachute packs. There would have been no reason to just leave him with the .22 survival rifle.

They were probably sent to a work gulag camp in Siberia. Yank ferret pilots were flying over the Soviet Union in the 1950s . They were testing out the Soviet radar and defense systems. If they were shot down and captured the survivors were sent to the gulag. The U.S. government said these men were shot down while testing "weather conditions". Google books about the "Ferret overflights" in the 1950s. Salute those brave men who died , because they were making sure the Russkis wouldn't be able to engage in a "Pearl Harbor" attack against the USA.

Isn't it something how we're always training to fight the last war? How would these techniques have helped in Korea or Vietnam? This is how to evade if you are shot down in Europe during a widespread European conflict with an organized resistance, and if you are also of white, European ancestry. It was useless before it was released, though it's a fun film to watch for the drama. 🙂

This film was produced in the early 1950s to train USAF personnel on what to do if the were shot down in Eastern Europe, behind the "Iron Curtain." (B-29s were still in service at that time.) The country they land in is fictitious, entirely made up for this film. This is all explained in more detail in the description that I included with the video upload. Zeno.
