From the Academy Award® winning team behind THE WHITE HELMETS (2016) and VIRUNGA (2014), EVELYN documents the story of a family overcoming the unthinkable. On a walking odyssey across the United Kingdom, they confront a past they’ve been unable to talk about, whilst simultaneously repairing the fractures in their own relationships.
Director Orlando von Einsiedel turns the cameras on himself, as he and his parents and siblings embark on a journey in remembrance of their brother and son, Evelyn, who took his own life over a decade ago.
Along the way, they are faced with the realities of a walking mission - camping, exhaustion, the wet and cold. Yet despite these, and the challenges that come with remembering what happened to Evelyn, there are moments of happiness and humour as they recall the good memories that they buried alongside the painful ones.
Part quest film, part road-trip, part memoir, EVELYN seeks to address the past, in order to find some peace in the present, and look to the future.

Beloved Orlando, thank you for sharing this documentary with the world. In 2008 I lost two loved ones, my brother Cesar unexpectedly passed from pneumonia and my best friend committed suicide. As I saw your experience and feelings, it mirrored much of what my family and my friend's family went through and still today live with. I want to share that I'm thankful to God for saving me in Jesus name in 2006, two years before our loss. God helped me through it, I cried all I had to cry at that time and occasionally not often, I'll cry, but God helps and guides me to not cross into depression. I'm thankful for that. My brothers and sisters all deal differently, I saw a lot of your family emotions and reactions in my family. I pray for the salvation of your family, for healing and restoration. Of course life is a hard process as is and we learn to live, cope, keep living. I just wanted to share that with Jesus there is hope and so much more. Thank you for the gift of Evelyn, much love in Christ Jesus my Lord and Savior 🙏💖😊 God bless.

This film really moved me. Opening up to those around you may not fix your problems, but it makes them easier to deal with. If you're suffering, speak up. And if you feel conserned for another, ask them with sincerity if they're okay. Talking about our problems can heal wounds and even save lives.

I was touched by the movie I found all the members relatable and endearing..just felt like giving a big hug to everyone. Having experienced living abroad and the mixing of cultures I could sense the sort of cultural shock between some members of the family..the father still being very direct and seemingly unsensitive in some of his remarks and his children extremeley soft spoken and introvert in expressing their emotions..still I felt for the dad who appeared to be trying but what can you do when you grow old qnd clumsy??? In any cases another thing that truck me is the overall feeling of guilt among the family members when I'm certain that the death of Evelyn was so completely related to his illness...there is nothing that one can do to prevent a fatal decision...and I hope that all the siblings in particular can unburden themselves from their loss...I really wish to hear that they all found happiness be it in love or career..they are beautiful people so kuddos to the mother and father.

Very moving . Beautiful . Especially the reading of that poem on the Sussex downs. I was crying then . Who wrote that poem . ?? Loss of someone so so close . That must be so hard to deal with. Especially when that person was so full of youth and energy . Despite the issues . You have lived with, and loved that person . They are part of you . Your mental and spiritual fibre. They are your brother. Everything that that is . Fucking hell . I am so glad I watched this tender film , and not another episode of Fear Thy Neighbour. I live in West Sussex. I love the Sussex downs. I'm always up there ! That poem . On the downs . I am so touched. I wept and found it hard to stop . I too knew someone very well who took his own life . He was 22years old. And something weird happens to your perception of reality. You see that person in a child . A random child . Or you see a heart shaped pebble on a beach , and it is them . Or there is s song that speaks to you , and it is them . I say take it all up , and let it all out . But the thing is , this sort of loss simply never goes away. It never does . So I suppose you have to sort of roundly embrace it as part of learning. About the strangeness of the mind . It is so difficult. This deeply personal film was something I actually felt privileged to see . To watch . Very moving . Wow !

Janey - For you...It is from the Smoke Jumper by Nicholas Evans Walk Within You If I be the first of us to die, Let grief not blacken long your sky. Be bold yet modest in your grieving. There is a change but not a leaving. For just as death is part of life, The dead live on forever in the living. And all the gathered riches of our journey, The moments shared, the mysteries explored, The steady layering of intimacy stored, The things that made us laugh or weep or sing, The joy of sunlit snow or first unfurling of the spring, The wordless language of look and touch, The knowing, Each giving and each taking, These are not flowers that fade, Nor trees that fall and crumble, Nor are they stone, For even stone cannot the wind and rain withstand And mighty mountain peaks in time reduce to sand. What we were, we are. What we had, we have. A conjoined past imperishably present. So when you walk the wood where once we walked together And scan in vain the dappled bank beside you for my shadow, Or pause where we always did upon the hill to gaze across the land, And spotting something, reach by habit for my hand, And finding none, feel sorrow start to steal upon you, Be still. Close your eyes. Breathe. Listen for my footfall in your heart. I am not gone but merely walk within you. ---Nicholas Evans

I lost my son to schizophrenia 7 years ago. We talk about him all the time. As his mum I couldn't hide my sadness in the earlier years. This gave my kids the chance to open up aswell. We talked and cried a lot. We all have different memories and to hear eachother's memories of him has helped us lots. It was my husband and kids that opened my eyes to see how special his and mine relationship was. A relationship I was so used to for 28 years. Born on my 26th. Taken his life on his sister's 21st. We miss him so much!!

I just watched this on Netflix. I wish they knew more about the link between coeliac disease/gluten and schizophrenia; Evelyn’s offensive wind is a symptom of the poor gut health gluten causes, and a gluten free diet may have helped him. Such a dignified wonderful family. May God bless and heal them.

I wonder if Evelyn might have been a victim of "PANDAS: an abbreviation for Pediatric Autoimmune Neuropsychiatric Disorders Associated with Streptococcal Infections. ... PANS stands for Pediatric Acute-onset Neuropsychiatric Syndrome and includes all cases of acute onset OCD, not just those associated with streptococcal infections." I've been reading about these rare brain infections which cause extreme behavioral problems as a result of a streptococcal infection in another part of the body. Maybe Evelyn's family might be able to put two and two together and realize this is what he had. Could give them some clarity. At any rate, my heart goes out to anyone who has lost a child or a sibling for whatever reason.

These movies are always frustrating because invariably someone holds back the truth. Someone knows what life event caused this. People are acted upon at a young age, they don't just grow up suicidal. Without fail there is some event, some abuse, and usually the parents know but have so trained themselves to believe a false reality that even they don't remember, or choose not to divulge.
