I had a Yamaha, AND a Casio, sis! Hahahaha! Y'all remember them songs like Oh Danny Boy?! 😅😅😅 Yoooooo, Addy from American Girl?! I had saved up my money from babysitting to buy her! Hahahahaha! 💖💖💖 My mom and Evelyn's mom must have been related, because, dang! But play is something that we (black folks) were always told to "stop playing" (recalling Wanda's most recent stand up comedy show). It's important to never lose that inner child that helps us cope with adulting. I've been reading more (physical) books, going outside, bouncing my basketball, playing beach volleyball, and smiling more because of it. Go out and play today! Thank you Evelyn, this video was/is much needed!

God, I'm like 3 minutes into this and I feel this so hard: I'm basically doing everything I want right now and I feel nothing but burned out and stressed out, which feels... wrong? Like, I'm so privileged to be here, but I'm also a neurotic mess because literally everything I have goes into my work every single day, and I feel like I have nothing left for myself. what I'm saying is you knew the perfect time for the right video to my heart. okay, now to watch the rest. Also, I think it's really funny that you're making a video about this when that's also the stressor. But I guess that's kinda your thing too.

@@mangomania7321 I feel you!! To be honest I had the same problem until I started doing Noom. It's a weight loss program & it's not for everybody (especially if you don't need to lose weight!) but it's been helpful for me because it's holistic & it teaches you to take care of yourself beyond "how to eat right." It took me through the steps I needed to figure out HOW to take care of myself. It made me set GOALS for how to take care of myself. Like instead of my goals being all boring "adulting" stuff ("Pay my taxes," "Clean my house,") I started setting goals to do the things I wanted to do: Go see the beach, pet the dogs, paint my nails, buy art supplies, treat myself to a coffee & sip it in peace without looking at my phone for 15 full minutes...From the little things to the big things. It's made such a huge difference in shifting my focus from life being one huge chore to actually making time to enjoy things. (The chores still get done, but they don't run my life.) Hoping some of this helps cuz I'm only just recently starting to figure this stuff out!! ❤

Yep! So many of my childhood joys are now my occupation. Which is a step up, and I am proud of myself. It took me a minute, to reorient my life, so I was doing more fulfilling work. Now I got to find that balance, and get back to creative play. As a child, I would make up skits, and improvise entire scenes with recurring characters. I used to make up songs and record those. Make up dance routines, or spend hours learning the dances from music videos. I would cut up socks, and make outfits for my dolls. I would drape sheets over myself and my sister, and we would make outfits for ourselves. I would go "exploring" through my neighbor hood: translation- trespassing into yards, fields, and woods that didn't belong to me. AND just like internet cousin, making books, doodling, and reading.

When I was a Lil', if you will, I drew constantly, on any scrap of paper I could find. I drew little comics of me and my friends. I read like crazy (American Girl books too! I only had 2 Addy books, but mostly Felicity). Roald Dahl was my favorite. I had wanted to meet him and found out he passed away, so I drew a picture as tribute: my fourth-grade self sitting under a tree, eyes closed, with a book in my lap, and the sun shining with titles of his books in each sunbeam. I collected rocks, neat-looking bottles, stamps, keys. I was a bit like Baby Evelyn in that I also always wrote things down: journals, diaries, poems, short stories, somewhere I even have a few cassettes I made as audio journals! Thank you for this inspiration to not lose our curiosity, Evelyn!

I used to play the piano too. My go to hobbies are reading, going to the movies, journaling, going to thrift stores and book stores and going on walks :)

Is movie and series binging a hobby??? That’s EXACTLY what I love doing. I also love furniture shopping, watching the food and property channels. Basically as a self employed adult, I enjoy doing things that don’t need me to do anything, things that are colourful and creative and help me leave my world of responsibilities and feed my soul... I really enjoy that! I think these are my hobbies...P.S I’d like to read like I used to when I was a child, because I worry about my vocab!

I think that's a part of being an adult that never crossed my mind. When you're in school your creative time is structured by teachers and care givers, as is the praise received. This was super helpful. I've been bullet journaling for about 3 years and I love it! I get to doodle, organize, and write about my day for da funnn!

No lies, I had that same Christmas morning nightgown. That plaid flannel with the white ruffle. My Granny gave me and my mom matching flannels every year!🤣 Who else had that nightgown?

My hobby as a kid that I just got back into this past January was video games. I stopped in college only because I didn't want to bring expensive game systems to school but I just never got back into it. It's been really great because now I have something that I get excited about that isn't tied to my value, productivity, skill level, or anything else I overthink.

Wow this video is so timely! My therapist recently told me that I need to "play" so I can discover my passions. Some of the hobbies from my childhood that I want to explore again are writing (for fun) and studying languages. I'm definitely gonna check out skillshare to help with this. Thank you, Evelyn!

I certainly need a hobby! You read me for filth, cousin. I also used to collect rocks and sticks, so much so, my grandmother brought me back a bag of rocks from her trip to Jamaica 🇯🇲

I had lots of hobbies as a kid. I danced (hip hop, tap, jazz, ballet, modern), baking(is now my job), reading, cooking(also kind of my job), piano playing, and probably some other things I don’t remember at the moment.

Gurl, I was the queen of the Exacto knife. I would collage new cassette (...yes, I wrote cassette) and CD covers for my favorite artists, and design/write/draw my own books. It's amazing you posted this video. My therapist asked me a few weeks what I do just for my fun and I couldn't think of a damn thing.

Honestly. This is my favorite video you have ever made. I use to play the saxophone and pretend to own a restaurant. I would make fake menus and come up with creative names for my dishes. I would use up all my Nana’s napkins and a plastic forks. I really need to tap back into that.

I played tennis on my high school team but now do it from spring to fall because it's a fun way to get in exercise without feeling like you're working out. I still read for fun, though not as much as I'd like because I am in school. But when I find myself scrolling mindlessly through social media, going down the youtube rabbit hole and/or flipping channels, I'll pick up a book and read because that means I obviously have the time. The only habit I've lost and want to possibly get back to is writing-I used to write poems and stories but fell out of habit once I graduated high school.

I had piano lessons but didn't stick with it because I really wanted to play the drums but my mama wasn't goin for having all that noise lol. I did do ceramics and jewelry making. Now I customize sneakers and am tapping into photography. I still read constantly!

Hi Evelyn, I can’t remember my hobbies. Did I have some, I don’t know. I do remember taking piano lessons and hating it. I read lots of books now (nothing thought provoking or would make a great impact on my life) but to release the stress of a job I put too many hours into each day. I’m a new subscriber, you help with the stress by making laugh. Thanks

My childhood hobbies included reading (which I still do), writing soap operas (because I watched them with my grandma), dancing (I thought I was a choreographer), and singing (which I kept to myself because there are people in my family who can GOSPEL SANG and next to them I might as well carry a tune in a bucket). Somehow I hit a creative block and stopped everything but reading. I can feel them missing. I need to just let the juices flow and not be critical of myself.

Hi Evelyn! I used to climb trees and climb up the ironwork to get up on the roof of the house since we had a flat roof. I drew with chalk all over the carport, wrote romantic stories about Menudo (the boy band, not the tripe dish), rode my bike, played hopscotch, read constantly and collected stickers. Stuck them all up on my bedroom door. Then I turned 13 and wasn't allowed to play outside anymore. Bummer.

as a kid my hobbies were making scooby doo comics bc i was obsessed with scooby doo and anything spooky and i turned them into little stapled books too!! i also dabbled in neopets fan art and bone collecting... lol recently i took up embroidery and realized i can make patches and in an attempt to impress a girl i ended up monetizing my only hobby so now i'm not entirely miserable but like,,,,, oof just trying to learn sewing and picking one to be a side hustle and the other to be a hobby that serves me for fun and also so i dont have to pay other ppl for both of these things

How are you SO incredible!!? Love your vids! Childhood hobbies? Hmmm... as a child of the 70s (not a typo ;-)), learned to crochet (still do) and knit, macramé and every other thing to do with yarn or those strips of fabric used to (basket)weave into potholders! Definitely a reader (then and now) and... gasp! I remember... my sister and I used to write skits and act them out! haha! Most of my real fun came from playing outside. LOVED finding creeks, woods, trails, etc.. I wasn't really an indoor person - only doing those indoor activities in bad weather! In any event, thoroughly enjoyed your photos and hobbies! Your family is great! God bless you all and cannot wait until your next vid!

I used to make stories all the time. And I loved making up restaurant menus with my sister. We also liked to come up with "inventions"; when you put a hanger on a doorknob and tie your jump rope around it and essentially create a mess of toys and items to pull a door open lmao. Good times. These days, I need to figure out my hobbies again and make time for them. College makes me not want to do much though 😴lol

We had almost the same hobbies! I didn't play piano, I played violin. I loved reading. I mostly just read for school now, or listen to audiobooks. I also made my own books when I was a kid! I have made zines as an adult and it is so fun to channel the activities that gave us joy as kiddos.
