It's interesting that 连 is used to emphasize a noun, and I don't think it can be used to emphasize a verb. For example: "Even his dog likes to swim" (besides his brothers and sisters) could be: 连他的狗都喜欢游泳. But I don't think 连 could be used to say: "His dog even likes to swim" (besides running and jumping). I think only 甚至 could be used here, to say: 他的狗甚至喜欢游泳. Another tricky thing I found with 连 and 甚至 is that they cannot be used to express "even if ...". For that, I think only 即使... (or 即便...) can be used.
@ChineseGrammarSimplified
@ChineseGrammarSimplified 2 жыл бұрын
"His dog even likes to swim" (besides running and jumping) can be translated as 他的狗连游泳都喜欢。In this case, we basically see the word "even" used to emphasize the object "swiming", therefore adopt the "variation 2" of the pattern.
@mountaintag
@mountaintag 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, I like this. And I think it's consistent with the rule that 连 should be followed by a noun. Because, in the sentence "The dog likes to swim" or "The dog likes swimming", the elements "to swim" or "swimming" look like verbs, but they are actually nouns, being the object of the verb "likes".
@qianfeizhou8265
@qianfeizhou8265 2 жыл бұрын
You are right, 即使/即便 are particularly used to express ‘even if’ in Chinese. Even and even if are two completely different concepts in Chinese language.
@mountaintag
@mountaintag 2 жыл бұрын
I would like to reword my example as: "His dog even LIKES to swim" (he doesn't just tolerate it). The emphasis is now on the verb "likes" (and not on its object "to swim"). In this context, I believe that 连 cannot be used. But I think that 他的狗甚至喜欢游泳 should be okay to convey this idea.

For 甚, could you also use 什? Or would that not make sense? As far as I know, the first version of the word is an older use?
@ChineseGrammarSimplified
@ChineseGrammarSimplified Жыл бұрын
No, they are not interchangeable. The traditional characters for 什么 are 什麼. As you can see, 什 is both used in simplified and in traditional characters. 甚至 is the same

No. 2 is very interesting. By saying 我连那家饭馆也没去过 the emphasis is on "that restaurant". So, the context could be: "I have never been to any restaurant in that town. I have never even been to that restaurant." However, if the context is: "I couldn't have left my wallet there. I have never even been to that restaurant" then the emphasis is on "not even been". I think this would be expressed very differently in Chinese. I think it could be: 连去那家饭馆我都没去过. As this video explained, 连 is used to emphasize a noun (such as "restaurant"). It cannot normally be used to emphasize a verb (such as "go"). However, if the verb is negated (such as "not even go"), then I think that 连 does indeed need to be used, as in the example I gave above. (The verb 去 appears two times, but is only negated the second time.)

@@mountaintag Hello~I think in your case, it would be ok to say (I couldn’t have left my wallet there,) (因为)我连那家饭馆都没去过, interesting thing is there is no other better way to emphasize verb grammatically, usually Chinese people would add emphasis vocally. When we say it, you would tell the difference. But it’s another story. On the other hand, since the key point in your case is to find the wallet, hence, logically speaking, in Chinese, ‘there’ would be the core in this sentence, therefore it’s ok to emphasize 饭馆 in the second part. Hope my explanation would be helpful to you~thank you for loving Luke’s video.

@@mountaintag In No. 2, actually we don’t have to consider too much context details, the better way to say it is to use pattern 2, 我甚至没去过那家饭馆, here, 没…过 means ‘haven’t ‘.
