The homes of nobility were constructed as suites of rooms where seclusion was impossible - all bedrooms were interconnected, and even kings and queens sought privacy by draping their beds with canopies. Bedrooms served as places for bathing and grooming.
Monks slept in communal dormitories, children were sent to boarding schools where individual sleeping quarters were unheard of, and hospital patients lay in large wards...
In Europe, enormous beds were built to accommodate multiple people at once. Even in societies where the upper classes enjoyed all the benefits of wealth and luxury (such as ancient Rome), bedrooms were nothing more than small cells. Not to mention the common folk who slept for centuries on benches, chests, stoves, or haylofts with their entire families...
The revolution in this important aspect of human life occurred in the 17th century - that's when separate rooms began to be designated for bedrooms. And it changed fundamentally when the comforts of civilization, such as plumbing and sanitation, entered homes.
Nowadays, a separate bedroom is the norm. It is accessible to all layers of society. This is just one of the many advantages we should be grateful for, being born and living in our time.
