The old saying when it comes to used car dealers is that if their lips are moving, they're lying. In the case of this 1974 340 Roadrunner advertised as an original numbers matching car, the problem is obvious... They didn't build any 1974 340 cars!
We pointed this fact out to the seller on Facebook Marketplace, and he acknowledged the mistake and promised to correct it immediately, but when we checked the ad one week later to the day, nothing had changed. Probably because he had about 20,000 reasons not to correct it.

It sold at Mecum January 10th 2023 for $30,800. Lot #533039. Mecum didn't advertise it as a clone and said numbers matching. Are they slimeballs too? Please show us another 1974 318 in this condition for $15k. I'll wait. Just be honest. You don't like clones and don't being able to buy cars for nothing anymore.

After the Black Ghost fiasco and the obliterated VIN found on the $85,000 Kawasaki a couple of weeks ago, my opinion of Mecum is more slimeball than not. They didn't advertise it as a "clone" but did they clearly announce when the bidding started that it was in fact a 318 and NOT a 340 as was indicated on the hood, AND on the 1973 big block air cleaner with the 340 Four Barrel pie tin?...which is all that a relatively unsophisticated buyer would go by? Yes, slimy and par for the course. Now, what is the value of a numbers matching 318 Roadrunner with the wrong wheels, wrong intake, wrong valve covers, wrong air cleaner, wrong stripes and wrong wing on the back? $15k is being generous.

It buyer beware... period. if youre doing sight unseen get ready to be bent over. If youre going to any auction doesn't matter, do the research. Just because they have a major name doesn't mean someone isnt going to drop the ball, mis-represent it or take what the seller told them it was. Thats on their legal department to then get it straighten out. IF AND ONLY IF it gets caught. Mecum and B-J sell thousands of cars at each event. the % of missed ones arent going to be many but like always, the one "whoops" erases 15 "atta boys" My dad worked for the school board basically a government entity. There was watchers watching the watchers and there was still shady crap going on by most peoples moral standards, again, IF you knew. Heck, if Dodge themselves could put a 3/4ton driveshaft while assembling my dads 2005 1ton dually, anything can happen at the assembly line too. Its wrong by the standards set, but is it just a "Friday end of shift car" too?

I'm with Tony on this. Full disclosure isn't hard to do. These guys are doing the same thing the Gov does by lying through omission. Just be honest. You'll sell more cars at less money because you have a good reputation. This practice here is intentional. The seller is purposely trying to play innocent, but he wants that top dollar for something that is not what he says it is. It's a clone, period.

Right. He could have simply said that 340 was posted in error w/o pointing fingers at a scapegoat. If he is the owner or manager, then he would be the only person to blame at the end of the day. He owns that and confirmed who and what he failed to tell his secretary or webmaster to correct that alleged mistake. Instead, he leaves that bait, now a known fraud, dangling for some guy who doesn't really know what he's looking at. I'd say the mis-badging is the first red flag. I don't know all of the specifics on that, but the Roadrunner on the scoop and on the upper rear area on the side struck me as not correct.

Had one slimy salesguy who thought he knew all the catchphrases and trigger words, but didn't know cars...or thought that I didn't. Told me he could get one, all original, numbers matching, V8 engine, top loader 4-speed and the venerable 9 inch rear end. Problem is, they didn't come with a V8...or a top loader (not even a 4-speed!)...or a 9" rear. The idea is that if they throw out a bunch of catchphrases like word salad, maybe they'll trick someone.

Yup, and assuming that they got the VIN right, it decodes as a 318 car with the VIN for the win: R for Belvedere/Satellite, M for Medium price class (Road Runner), 21 for two door coupe, G for 318 CID V8 with two barrel, 4 for 1974 model year, G for St. Louis, MO assembly (Fenton) and the rest is the production sequence. The Fenton plant complex operated from 1959 to 2009. The photos on the website don't show the engine as you stated, nor do they show the trim tag. No tag, can't brag. If it's truly a Dark Moonstone car originally, the paint code on the fender tag is "L8".

If this cobbled-together Roadrunner, originally equipped, by the VIN code with a 318 two-barrel "grocery getter" engine, did get a 340 four-barrel, GREAT, nice engine, especially if it's in good shape and was (re)built correctly. But, as Tony and others point out, the 340 was DISCONTINUED the prior year (1973), so this vehicle can't possibly be a "numbers matching". So either this joker who blames his secretary for the "confusion" doesn't know what he's talking about, or he's been caught trying to pull a "Fast One". That doesn't mean the car isn't worth a look, it's just simply not worth anything near the $36.5K he was asking.
@googleusergp
@googleusergp 5 ай бұрын
@@selfdo I would think that any car dealer should KNOW what he's selling and Chrysler VIN decoders are everywhere out there, so you can easily determine if it's the right engine or not (it's not, the VIN confirms this left St. Louis/Fenton, MO with the "G" code 318 CID V8 with two barrel). By 1974, "sticker muscle" was all the rage and cars "looked" fast, but weren't of course due to tightening regulations and emission controls. Of course there are a few hold outs (e.g. Super Duty Trans Am), but on the whole by 1974, it was "looks fast, but not so fast...." or "simulation" as Mr. Magnante likes to call it. Either way, I would have changed the ad as Mr. DeFeo stated. I would say, "Based on the VIN, this left the St. Louis, MO plant as a "G" code 318 V8, and it still (or does not) retain that engine, but has been treated to some cosmetic upgrades. It does decode as a Road Runner (2nd VIN digit as an "M" for Medium price class) and it was originally code L8 Dark Moonstone as shown by the fender tag". I would have shown the VIN and the fender tag and decoded it to show what I was selling. Mr. DeFeo is right, there's no issue with selling it, but not at a premium price. I run into this with Trans Ams all the time and their "Big Block Pontiac V8s". You just can't educate stupid with some people.

I knew it was actually built in 1885 as it had been photographed by the local historical society with the photo published in a book about historical buildings in the town. Just wanting to correct the realtor, I simply called him, informing him politely of his mistake. Of course his response was, "Thanks for the info, I'll fix it right away" - and of course he failed to do so! About ten years ago, I was working at a transmission shop. Most of what we did were "walk-ins" (more like tow-ins), but we did occasionally sell a few units online during the winter months, business tended to slow down then. Anyways, shop listed a 4R70W transmission online, and somebody from southern Louisiana called about it. I was going to take some time off to visit my sister who lived just 40 miles from the guy. So I offered to take the transmission with me and drop it off with the guy who bought it, shop just comp'd me for half of the shipping rate, so it was a win all the way around. So I get out to the guy, and it's a used car dealer. He had an older Crown Vic with a bad transmission and wanted to replace it. Problem was, the Crown Vic was really, really aged, it didn't have the 4R70W. The right transmission was the AODE. I explained it to the guy, but he was adamant because his in-shop mechanic told him that it would fit because both used the same engine, the 4.6L V8. I told him that while the transmission would bolt to the engine, they shared the same bell-housing bolt pattern, that the connectors were different. I offered to give him a refund, but he swore he was right, and there was no talking him out of it. Ponder on that for a moment... if a salesman is trying to talk you out of a deal, shouldn't that mean that there's something wrong? Anyways, about a week later, shop gets a call, that transmission wouldn't fit, and he was demanding a refund. Shop agreed to the refund, but on the condition that he ship us the transmission back at his own expense. Guy wasn't happy, and in the end, never did ship the transmission back.

You're right, the color is attractive sitting still, but in my experience as a retired driver, I've found gray / silver cars can be like camouflage on the road. Also, tough colors to match after the inevitable fender bender. Rock on.

Last year one of these classic car dealers had a 2 door 62 Plymouth Belvedere badged as a Savoy listed on Ebay. It looked really nice. They posted a picture of the trim tag too, so I decoded it and it turned out that the car was actually a four door Belvedere from the factory, that was converted to two at some point. I messaged the dealer and told him that it was a four door from the factory and he said he would change the ad, he never did.

Tony as usual you are 100 percent correct. They did make 74 Road Runners that had 318’s, if it is numbers matching then yes that is what it is. If this guy/ dealership is trying to pass the motor off as a 340 based on the decals and an unknowledgeable average guy, that is real low of them to try that and not correct the add. The big scam our way are the small block Chevy cars they advertise as a 383 with a cam, no proof, no receipts, that is what they were supposedly told from the previous owner. Many times it is just a run of the mill 350 that may or may not have been rebuilt either stock or bored .30 over, no 400 crank, no clearances for the rod ends in the block. Really no good way to tell for an average guy. The buyer will never know when the lie happened for sure if he ever rebuilt it and found out. Over the years I owned a 74 Road Runner black on black, red stripe, 400 motor. I also owned a 74 Satellite Sebring Plus that was white on white, black pin stripes, white vinyl top with a 318 motor. They were amazingly light cars as far as the weight for their size and great cars overall. I souped up both motors and they burned tires well. They don’t get much street credit since the motors from the factory were low compression but the styling for the car was superb and incase you didn’t know it, the 74’s had more body noise insulation than the 73’s that were close in appearance. The satellite was especially quiet in rain with that top it had. Rain was noisier in the Road Runner. The Road Runner I sold before it went over 100k when a guy just kept adding hundred dollar bills on the pile until I said yes. It was real nice, great condition inside and out. The Satellite I drove for 15 years, with many cross country trips with over 300k on it when I sold it for decent money. I am at my limit on personal cars but if the right one of those came along at the right price I would buy it on a dime. Those 400’s were awesome motors, the pistons are bigger than the 440 motors had. If you cam them with upgraded springs, put in thin head gaskets, then gasket match the exhaust ports to the exhaust manifolds with a mini grinder sort of a predecessor of the modern Dremel tool and you had a motor that was credible for the street. Just those few things a guy can do at home and those motors wake up and will take some names. Ask me how I know. I didn’t spend much money on it at all, I did not deck the heads. The cam and springs came new right off the shelf at the speed shop right off base. Cams were cheap back then, I don’t remember what I paid, not even sure if it was under a hundred bucks but cheap whatever it was. My take on those 400 motors; they have major potential, they have the quick take off of a small block with the big pistons and fairly short stroke of that particular block, along with all the top end of the big blocks that they were. Chrysler big block 383, 400 or the raised block 440 were incredible as far as power. You have good taste in cars.

An old friend of mine ordered a new '74 Road Runner. He had started planning to do that during the '73 model year, when the hi-perf small block was the 340. By the time he ordered the '74s were out and no more 340, so he ordered it with the 360 and four-speed. He still has it.

In the late 80s and thruought most of the 90s one of our car buddies was the lone mopar guy among us Oldsmobile guys in our little group. Dave had his dads original red paint 1973 Road Runner witb black hockey stripes and 33,000 original miles on the clock. Once Dave got the keys to the car, the stock 318 got put away and in went a nice tight low mileage 440 out of a New Yorker which received a dingleball hone, bearings, gaskets and some purple stripe cam...i used to remember which one was which and im sure you Mopar guys can remind me. Tbis car looked great. It ran even better! Having an 8 3/4 axle meant Dave easily swapped in a 4.30 gearset from an old satellite he used to street race. Then the 73 received a quality bent up, locally sourced full 2 1/2 exhaust system with the classic original flowmaster mufflers and even found a set of original chrome tips for that car. It looked and sounded real sweet. In the very late 80s, me and a handful of other guys were fresh out of high school with me being the youngest, and our youthful vigor had all of us studying all the greatest magazines at the time which Tony knows which ones were the very best!...along with all the old school tricks our dads taught us, with some hime brewed thinking...all this to go as quick as possible with what one had. For example, my 3800 pound 1970 442 was finally running solid 12.60s as a street car with tailpipes and 3.42 gears when i was just 19 years old! Other guys with their 442s and cutlass's were right behind me, and so was Dave and the fat 1973 Road Runner! We all loved the red 'runner even tho it was the "wrong brand" for myself and this little group. Dave was certainly humble during a time when he really didnt have to be as he appreciated what we were doing with oldsmobiles yet knowing full well with some money he could just step up to a hemi car and be king of the hill. Well..then, like now, money has always been an issue and a stockish 440 with a cam, intake, Holley carb and headers was as fast as it was gonna get. Back then however, fast as it was gonna get was wayyy quicker and faster than most people were going already due to the "times". Back then a true 12 sec street car was a sleeper in its own right, 13s was a good runner but 12s was not very common at all. Dave was in that club with us Olds guys and with a heavy red mint "wrong year" road runner. Times marched on in the 90s and our little group splintered while guys went their own way. Getting married, buying a house then having to pay for it, little human beings created and the support system needed for them to grow all came into play and eventually we all did our own things. Even contacting one of these guys in that group would be a challenging effort now in 2024. Sure i still have good friends from that era, but that core group i was part of is forever gone, never to be a whole again. Last i knew Dave acquired the title to that 73 from his dad and still had the car. That news is from about 15 years ago so who knows if he still has it today. I was getting cars mixed up with good times and friends in this little rant so it may be a bit hard to read. I really only intended to bring up the 73 road runner but then got all over the road and off track. Like you said Tony, i used to not like those years and body style but then they grew on me and i absolutely love them now... and a big part of that was Dave and the red 1973 "440" Road Runner!

These are my favorite videos you do. I am one to geek out over the details of what made what what. In other words when I came across a cool dude who knows his knowledge of the details on these cars I just eat it up. That's my favorite thing to do with my passion for old cars. You can read a lot online but to hear it from a guy who's had their hands on it I appreciate. I literally just did this last week with a guy selling mustang cobra parts. I sent him a message with a quick detail on what years had what and he said thanks and revised his listing, guy was super thankful. Next guy I went to go buy some oem cobra parts from. Turned out he was pulling parts off a different car than the picture. I knew the kid who built that car 20 years ago! I told the guy and his response was 'so your not buying the parts' I said no man you said cobra. He was pissed and slammed his garage door shut. He never fixed his listing its so far off but you know all you can do is educate yourself to not be screwed over I mean really. The classic restoration shop I worked at was the worst kind in the business. The old charge them thousands more than quoted type and then don't work on their shit. Some dude brought a chevelle in for paint or something little. 2 years later this old guy who was dying and just wanted to drive his car before he left, had a full blown dragster chevelle with custom everything the boss kept laughing saying the guys paying us to build a car hell never afford the parking bill for. Turns out this owner would charge these people storage fees for their cars that would never get touched aside from a bust your ass get it done week. Beyond me. I work for myself now and haven't had to lie to a customer ever since my last job working for someone else's shop. That scumbag guy is in bradenton FL. He moved down here when his customers were all dying on his custom choppers he was building right around the corner from OCC in New York. Moral of this message if you find a guy like Tony stick with him and know his time is more valuable than 1000s of others

Thank you for doing this, Tony! Here's what kills me about the current "muscle car market"... The majority of people buying these cars have no idea what they're buying. We're talking about boomers who grew up in this era, and maybe they had a hot car like a road runner, or maybe they had a four door Chevelle with a 307 and a power glide. Either way, now they're older and have lots and lots of disposable income, so they're buying these cars to "relive the past". It doesn't matter if they were actual gear heads back in the day- if you were car shopping in the 60s or early 70s, it would've been hard to buy a car that wasn't cool! Now, those same people are frankly ignorant shoppers looking for flash and looks, and they're only ever going to drive this thing from april-october once or twice a month on sunny Saturdays to car shows and get ice cream. These aren't transportation anymore- they're mismatched rolling sculptures of "remember when" masculinity for people who are well past their prime. It's a shame, because without all the fluff, this would probably be a nice solid car that could be used as a daily driver, and been affordable for someone who wants to get involved in classic cars for reasons other than ego. Sorry for the rant, I just really hate that I've been searching for a decent classic for over a year now, and the vast majority of the stuff I see is an absolute mess or so overpriced there's no point even trying to negotiate. The classic car market is in such a terrible shape these days.

He's doing just what nearly all these classic car dealers do. From my experience, most are doctored up, patched up, cheaply painted loads of crap made to look good just long enough to sell. The car may well be all original numbers wise, its the decal that's wrong and his description, which was likely just robbed off the internet by who ever wrote the ad. I find most of those Classic car dealer guys know little about the actual cars and they buy them from auctions or as partially complete projects which they pay the very least to complete and resell. Wrong motors, wrong decals, thick bondo, even newpaper and tar for floors are common. I saw one 55 Chevy that a guy bought locally that looked good from about 100ft away. Up close you could see the front seat back was leaning to the left, and the body gaps were all different. I got called to go see the car to add another set of eyes to what they had done, when I got there the owner was telling me what a sweet car he had bought and couldn't wait for my opinion. He went on tell me about the all original Corvette motor the car had and how it was once used in Nascar. What I saw on the lift was a badly rusted old turd with a 235 six in it and a Powerglide trans and what appeared to be layers of newspaper and undercoating for floor boards that had broken away along the whole left side. The tires were newer but already dryrotted in one spot on each tire, one was flat on the lift. The car was originally white, but someone painted it sort of a pinkish cream color with a white roof. The bench seat was recovered and didn't fully match the rear seat. The paint was decent but the body was not straight, thus the choice of color. The doors hinges, hood, and trunk were all misfit, the doors had a ton of play on all the top hinges. The fuel tank was in the trunk, a plastic fuel cell minus its foam but the stock fuel tank was painted bright silver over the rusted through spots and all. As bad as the car was, what he paid was worse. They got him for $44k. The car had no redeeming qualities and he was perfectly happy and I could see he wasn't buying our assessment of the car. A few months later I saw the car up for sale about 60 miles away for $65k with another crazy discription and story, with not a single thing fixed on it. I told my buddy about it and we sent a guy over there to check out the car, in hopes he'd get to drive it. He's pushing 450lbs. When he got there the guy refused to let him drive it, saying that the car didn't run and that he'd knock off $1000 if he took it the way it was. Cars like that seem to bounce around between those dealers, if one can't unload it they sell or trade it off to another one, or they have multiple locations far enough apart to move things around as needed to keep it looking like they're selling a lot of cars.

Classic/Muscle/Toy cars are for burning off excess cash. If you need to save for it, it's not worth it. Everything is over priced and most with reasonable price tags are already broken at the core. Yes, there can be one or two for sale that still have good bones, but those are not listed in regular sites. Those go under the counter first for a few rounds, until the profit is skimmed off and then listed for "the regular buyer", again no reason to spend any actual money on. The car itself will not ever be worth the investment. But it will be the endless money pit that ruins relationships, housing situations and finances until you get to sell it to the next sucker.

It is just car dealer bull shit. I traded a truck in years ago and a couple weeks later I saw the truck I traded in a used car lot in the area. I stopped because I figured I tell the owner what I put into the truck for new parts and things. Well, this guy didn't want to hear it and just talked over me telling me what the truck had like I was a customer. He told me it had a new engine with low miles, and he went on and on. It didn't, it had almost 200k on it. I got tired of his bull and walked out. It was definitely priced as a low mile truck. It was more than I paid for it 3 years prior with 80k less miles on it. This really made me dislike used car dealers

I like the 71-72 Roadrunners, they are shaped a lot like 68-69 GTOs, which are my favorite years of GTO. If I could find a 71-72 RR or Satellite I can afford, I would enjoy building it, and I would find a 440 to stuff in it. The problem with Mopar guys is even a rusted out shell like my 65 GTO was is a $15k car to them.

@@SweatyFatGuy I'm glad I got my Mopar collection decades ago when they were cheap and still have three surviving. Finding '71 Imperial parts is impossible though. Zero B or C body models have any parts that cross over to the D body. Even the rims are bigger! Good luck hope you find one!

Someone should follow this and make sure the new buyer was told it's a 318. If not the seller knew and even admitted he knew and would be open to be sued b/c even though it's as is, he had knowledge that he had information that he knowingly withheld. Good wotk Tony,

Definitely a minefield out there in the classic car world! Interestingly a friend just recently bought an oddball Canada only 73 Road Runner that I’ve never heard of. It’s a FACTORY 73 L code 360 Road Runner! Bizarre! I could send a pic of his fender tag and vin as proof(with his permission). It’s a late may 30 production that apparently Chrysler Canada only built. Approximately 20 were made- not sure why. There have been a few different oddball Canada only cars produced. I own a factory 71 Swinger 340-1 of approximately 80 made. Clearly your example is the typical classic car fraud.

Your doing the right thing by posting this because there's to many people that cant tell the difference between a V6 or a V8 let alone what engine comes in what, I noticed right away it had the wrong engine listed and even with the proper knowledge this dealership still tries to rip people off.

Reposting from another commenter. Apparently, this car was previously bought at Mecum Auctions for $30k. Perhaps the asking price of 36,500 is the wiggle room needed for someone to get their money back so the potential buyer will feel good when he/she bargains the price down a few grand. Looks like a classic case of hot-potato.

In 1974, my Dad got stationed in central California. We met our neighbors; one was a old-timer gearhead, and his son 'professionally'(ie, legally) drag-raced in the central valley circuit. I clearly remember the father, Joe, driving home a new car. It was a '74 Roadrunner. Of course we all went over to drool over this beautiful vehicle. I also remember his son asking how on earth 'Dad' got a 340 in it. Joe said "I ordered it direct from the dealership after they checked the factory to confirm there were still 340s available." Now it'd be 'one in a million' if that is the same car as Joe had back in the '70s, but I'm pretty sure I remember right.

Essentially these are Satellite Coupes in their base form? I knew a family that had a Satellite Sebring Coupe that was red on white....red body with a white vinyl roof, white interior..buckets with a console shifter and I think the "tuff" steering wheel...It's been years since I've seen the car but did have the opportunity to ride in it numerous times. If I recall it had the 400 V8 under the hood...and was a very comfortable and powerful car to ride around in.

Now that some of the public knows about this, maybe some organization will pose as buyers of the vehicles that this used car lot dealer has to offer, and eventually he might get caught in the act... His next career could become something in the lines of manufacturing--- License plates that will bolt onto vehicles , possibly going onto vehicles, like the ones that he over-charged people for...
