George Foreman, a seemingly invincible fighter that Ali also took down was once a sparring partner for Liston. Foreman said that Liston was one of the only fighters to make him step back. It's even crazy to me on how he never had a movie based on him kinda like Big George for example because everything about him is so interesting and how sad it is at the same time. Unfortunately when he became heavyweight champ people did not want him to be champ due to his mafia ties, his own people didn't want to involve him in the civil rights movement and hell even the President at the time JFK met Floyd Patterson and warned him not to fight Liston. Pretty sure after he won against Patterson he said he would actually tried to be a good heavyweight champion but the infamy was too strong for him and how intimidated people are from him they just simply didn't want him at all hell one time when he was heading home on a plane after winning the title he expected a bunch of fans to come and congrats him for the win, autographs, etc. Plane came and landed when he was finally out of the plane expecting a "Welcome Home Champ" absolutely no one has showed up. He then came home incredibly sad and depressed to the point where he just doesn't care about the infamy and embraced it at the end he unfortunately died in 1970 and no one gave Sonny a single bit of credit or praise during the time he was alive he had to face a lot of shit and if you look up his grave there was only two words on his grave that perfectly describes him Sonny Liston A Man. Truly he was a man and also made Mike Tyson a girl scout cookie

The hardest puncher between Jack Johnson and Earnie Shavers/George Foreman. Man could knock you out with either hand and he was dangerous to fight if he was calm and you felt your best and sure that you had what it took to beat him. He was twice as scary if all of that was the same, but -you made him mad. The OG Boogeyman. Before Ali the greatest heavyweight fighter was Pretty-boy Floyd Patterson. And Liston decimated him twice. Ppl were legit scared sitting in the audience akin to be at a animal reservation and you looked up just in time to see a lion or tiger had gotten past the boundaries and was running wide open behind a handler across the way from you and they don't know he's coming and its too late for you to warn them. And the lion closes the distance and leaps to get on the handler and maul him. Ppl were terrified to even look Sonny in the eye. The sad thing is Sonny wanted to better his life and shed his image of be the man the gangsters and loan sharks would call if you were late paying what you owed. He just got out of prison and he wanted the chance to show everyone that he could do good. Floyd Patterson was the man and the champion. Black ppl loved him and idolized him and there were even white ppl that respected his great skills, heart, strength, and abilities. Sonny wanted to be like him, when Floyd would win a fight, the entire town, just about, would come together to the airport and the tarmac to greet Floyd and his wife and congratulate him for winning his fight. Sonny wanted that love and adoration. He trained hard and beat Floyd easily, the crowd boo'd him out of the building. When talking to the press, he expressed his desire to show the country and the world that he could do good. Which some mocked him for, but he held out hope. He was flying he with his wife and he thought he'd get the same reception Floyd would...not a soul was out there aside of maybe a few employees of the airport. Sonny's heart was broken. And he decided, "if yall won't even give me the chance to be the good guy, and you want to keep me pigeonholed and stay the bad guy. Alright. Fine. I'll give you what you want and be the worst guy.". He became the final boss-like fighter. Brutally beating anyone brave enough &/or dumb enough to sign a contract to fight him. He used to play with the same press that mocked him. Sometimes if you asked a question he didn't like, he'd quietly and very still-sit there and stare them down till fear made them sit down. He never scowled or growled, nor barked, or yelled or screamed, he was the kind of scary no one had ever seen before. There ppl who even thought he had to have been the devil the way he could make a man sweet just by looking at him. And sometimes he would just interrupt the reporter asking the question. Snap at them and ask them a few uncomfortable questions, which he'd cut them off and interrupt their answer and ask another question and he'd do that til he got tired of playing with them. Many, if not most, fight posters would show Sonny towering over them and looking down his nose at them. Not in contempt nor disdain but worse, indifference. And his opponent would look at the floor, a wall, a camera, etc to avoid looking him in the eyes. He was real witty and had some very intelligent comebacks, the few times he'd smile or chuckle or laugh would bring levity to the room and the press would feel a lil comfortable and laugh as well. Until Sonny would stop...and back to the poker face. Sonny scared Ali, Ali was hreat at mental warfare and his antics got on Sonny's nerves. Sonny ended up walking into the same casino Ali was in and when he noticed he calmly walked over to Ali, and slap him almost of his stool and later when Ali tried to get him back, Sonny pulled out a gun, aimed it Ali and started shooting and started shooting in the air. It was a pop gun that looked real and when he made Ali run out the casino along with many others, and he looked at the ppl still there that were ducking and laughed, showing them the gun wasn't real. He had the biggest hands in heavyweight boxing history for a long time. Likely still does. When Ali beat him, the way he beat him, it broke him. So the picture you see is when Ali, in the 2nd fight, just barely hit him and Sonny, still haunted by the loss, acted like he couldn't get back up. And Ali was yelling at him to get up. I guess Sonny felt if it actually looked like Ali beat him via knockout that would be better than the first matches conclusion when he couldn't get up nor fight anymore in the corner and they had to throw the towel in on his behalf. The press and everyone were brutal to him when a 20-21 year old "kid", that didn't have his experience nor strength, with terrible defensive stance beat an older,, bigger, stronger, meaner world champion that was in the 4th or 5th years into his reign. His spirit was crushed and he never was the same before he retired and later died. He has a great yet sad story.

Interestingly enough the fight in which that photo was taken took place in Lewiston, Maine. This is because organizers pulled out of Boston Garden after many controversies involving the promoters and MA commission and delays involving the fighters, and they needed to find a replacement venue fast. To this day Ali v Liston remains the only heavyweight title bout to ever take place in the state of Maine, and I'm glad to see that such a tiny and often overlooked state gets to claim home to one of the most iconic photos of all time.
