Skill moving past 2 defenders is one thing, but can you imagine 1 player, just one, slicing through an entire defensive line, they had to create plans to stop him specifically. He wasn't the finisher, nor the play maker, he was the whole damn attacking force. Like pep said, "messi is number 10, 9 11, 8,7..." He does their job better than them(excluding defense and Gk ofc). You might say Messi was very young when they played together but he never really gotten any much better since than, and back than Rolandinho was clearly shining over Messi. He was able to dribble like Messi but with such smooth ease of control of the ball and full vision whats happening around at the same time so he had all of the options available in his pocket, chosing what's best that rarely was smart to try and dribble the whole opposing team. Dribble one, two and pass, or shoot was usually wiser. Everything was top notch including dribble with Zizou ball control masterclass but on full speed. Messi looked more like head down one or two pony tricks, very powerful, with all respect to that, but Ronaldinho was the whole orchestra of skills and wisdom. Like Messi and Zizou combined, but with extra touch of something neither of them had. Cristiano technique looked noobish next to Ronaldinho, people consider Messi and Ronaldo who's better, there is no consideration, Ronaldinho clearly stronger than Ronaldo. 15 straight years of Messi career while prime Ronaldinho prematurely ended, that's the solid argument for Messi, but he never got as good as Ronaldinho, just extremely close.

it's not like players don't care about clubs, country and fans nowadays. It is rather that players 20 years ago had personality which very much affected them play style. Nowadays there is way more tryhard type of rat race, while back than players like Zizou or Figo showed the class of ball control, even dribbling without much racing, and the game was usually much more technical. So player like Beckam with great technical crosses in penaulty box was one of the biggest stars. Nowadays it's more about speed and strengh, back than it was more of a miind game, decision making, technique. Only Lewandowski can match them level of wisdom, but even him is lacking personality a tiny bit. Times change, people change, so players too.
